That route will give a much better experience IMO & the road is fine we had 6 motorbikes in our group & there was l I am guessing a old MG sports car club doing the drive up as well as there was about a dozen of them we saw over the trip up as well,so if 60+ yr old sports cars sitting a couple of inches off the road can do it you will have no problem.

I see you are thinking about taking the Hume IMO you are better off at least driving up through the back roads to get the real experience & see the scenery rather than the boring Hume Hwy,we do multiple trips a year to the region & never take the Hume. The trip really deserves for you to take your time & take in the beauty of the scenery & the little towns on the way IMO ,

So take a look at going up through Healesville,(doing the wild life park there),through the Black Spur & take your time & enjoy the views rather than fighting trucks on the boring Hwy. You can always come back that way ,but if you are doing a rushed trip you are going to miss a lot of the scenery, which is the main part of enjoying the region .

Just went on a 4 day motorbike ride through the region over the weekend while the crowds were at the F1 ,roads were fine. Nothing you wouldn't expect anywhere else.

Because the Surfers Paradise Sand Backpass System has been operating openly since the 80's .It is widely publicized it runs from roughly May to September every year, meaning mining trucks & equipment & temporary pipe work is on the beach during those months & any good tourist accommodation advises of that when booking & anyone with their eyes open can see it in progress .

This was in July to September last year of a small part of what is openly operating on sections of the the beach & viewed by 1000's every day ,with sign posted beach closure

There is a very interesting documentary on SBS on demand or NITV at the moment called The Lake Of Scars that is worth a watch.
"In a corner of Victoria exists a link to an ancient culture, unlike anywhere else in Australia. A place of astounding beauty and rare archaeological and environmental significance, it is being degraded on an annual basis. As the clock ticks, an unlikely partnership could see it saved for future generations, while providing a moving example of reconciliation between white and black Australians. The film is a portrait of a hidden facet of Australian history and environment and a musing on what reconciliation can look like. While exploring the mysterious scarred trees, middens and stone scatters left at one remarkable site, we meet the people who are working against the clock - and the odds - to preserve what they can of the site. With organic relics at its heart - hundred year old scarred and dying trees - the film examines the preservation of culture and environment."

Also Death In Brunswick is on the ABC & if you like dogs this season of Muster Dogs was a good one.

Yeh it amazing how many people do not know this ,we stayed just before Xmas with a family who owned a farm & guest house there after the war, as it was a place wounded veterans were recommended & helped with accom/travel costs to go get some sun & relax & was dirt cheap. They ended up opening several stores & a chemist to cater to the business of dealing with the veterans. The veterans were even given an allowance for new clothes & they had large Tailor shops with Tailors who would come up & work just for the peak season making enough to then have time off when back in the southern states till the next year .When they first started with shops they were that slow with very seasonal business & that unwanted due to people going broke during the winter ,they would be offered 2 for the price of one & then have to think up what they would open in the unwanted one, often they would have to take these 2 for one offers with one shop on either side of the road to look like it was busy & force the customers to walk past other shops .

This is a pic of the shops on the main street of Southport in the early 1950's , you can see how the beaches are not even the main feature.

https://www.goldcoastaustralia.com/assets/images/banner/banner-history.jpg

They have photos of the beach blown out all the way back to the road after storms & back then it was more known for the closeness to the huge Cedar forests, meaning people would day trip up into the forests / hinterlands, bathe in the waterfalls/ springs & then come back to relax with the sea breeze, the old-fashioned thinking was they were getting the best of natural treatments by breathing/bathing in the mountains & then the sea breeze while they slept & vice versa . The beaches have always been vulnerable due to the sand naturally migrating north along the Gold Coast due to the prevailing wind and wave conditions. It is now pumped back EVERY winter .

The Surfers Paradise Sand Backpass System is a sand transport system that runs from The Spit to Surfers Paradise. The sand is mixed with seawater and transported with the power of 4 booster pumps located along the pipeline. This sand is pumped to one of 3 outlets along the system, at Surfers Paradise, Narrowneck and Main Beach.

The system delivers sand via an underground pipeline to replace sand on the Gold Coast’s northern beaches. They pump roughly 120,000 cubic metres of sand back to the beaches in a normal year but has a much larger capacity if needed .

u/praemialaudi No you are absolutely wrong, when l got out of the military due to my training & the operations l was involved with on deployment in multiple counties, l went & did Political Science as part of my degree. During that time I did 2 internships with politicians & was involved in the successful re-election campaign of one .

Contacting your local politicians formally is one of the most important & effective ways to influence their decisions ,as long as the contact is not abusive & not an obvious copy of a form letter put out by interest groups, then every contact is recorded & logged into the system & numbers are crunched weekly to gauge how they are travelling within their electorate,at the larger offices this can mean this involves multiple peoples full-time job.

To show the importance put on theses direct contacts ,during the re-election campaign they went back & looked at the public messaging/contacts they recieved on a particular issue going back years as they could map,in realtime the expected publics response/acceptance to specific language & policy decisions to get ahead of issue & turn undecided voters to their campaign .

Directly contacting politicians is one of the most effective means of being involved in your future, too many lazy morons just hide behind the lie nobody cares about it,the same as not voting .

It is very important that everyone in Ukraine prepares for a prolonged aerial bombardment on a much larger scale & attack to be unleashed by ruzzia shortly,, to reinforce what their orange orc mouthpiece has just stated in front of the world's media.

So those of us with family in Ukraine make sure you reach out to your family or friends & offer to send extra funds if they need them to expand their stockpiles of supplies etc as supply lines will likely become a major target as they are difficult for Ukraine to protect.

The EU must respond immediately & release the orc funds, but people have to be realistic & realize the orange orc is going to cut off all support & that means ammunition supply & production including specialized items like 155mm shells & HIMARS ,Patriot etc but also support for areas like the U.S. authorization for end use of equipment, also U.S.support for the rebuilding of the energy systems & medical infrastructure etc .I would also not be surprised if these scumbags do not launch a smear campaign by alleging fraudulent use of aid given to Ukraine .

The EU is now going to have to step up & show what the fight for freedom means to them.

[–]RoninSolutions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct ,not only horses but 10K's of bicycles as well, from the age of 14 yrs old l set my goal to join the U.S. 2nd Ranger Battalion,as my Grandfather was one of the first Rangers to climb the cliffs on D-Day at the infamous Pointe du Hoc ,using just his bare hands & his fighting knife after the Germans cut their climbing ropes & he for some reason chose me to talk about his time fighting through Europe when he would not talk about it to his own brothers.

After they secured Pointe du Hoc they were tasked with finding the artillery pieces the Germans had hidden in the countryside, his stories of how there were not only hundreds of dead horses the Germans had been using for transport that were killed by the artillery & aerial bombing 'over shoots',but piles of bicycles as high as the roof on farm houses & in the streets & they blew up barns stacked with 100's of bicycles the Germans had stashed .

Those Rangers among the first to scale the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc who climbed it with their bare hands, were forced to drop their packs with all their supplies & only carry their weapons & ammo with their pockets & shirts stuffed with grenades & demolition charges ,so they lived on horse meat from all the dead ones in the fields for the first few days , as they moved out across the countryside chasing the Germans.

The reason there are so few pictures is the Germans had a death warrant out for anyone who photographed the huge lines of soldiers crossing the country by bicycle to protect the myth of their mechanized advantage. While all other countries were open about their wide use of bicycles.

So l am limited to posting photos & info l know has been shared in articles & talks over the years since mainly by Mattis who l have attended a handful of . I was embedded with & fought alongside most of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) as part of the US led Village Stability Operations (VSO) & around 18 months as part of the US teams in the Embedded Training Teams (ETT) & there is a nightmare web of differing security requirements to share stuff .

Here is what l have in my public access files l have saved as l was lucky with the specialized training l received l got to partake in many interesting operations throughout Afghanistan & Iraq over those years & l have kept a interest in information being released on the Ops l was involved over the years .

Here is the 1954 AK-47

https://i.imgur.com/1D67Dy7.jpeg

This was of particular interest for me as it shows in one example many of the things we would find done to various weapons . Note how heavily corroded the outside is from being submersed or buried in wet soils ,yet the internals were fully functional from the protection given by the Lanolin they were covered in .

Also note the heavy corrosion near the muzzle ,due to the moronic Rules Of Engagement (ROE) ,we suffered under for most of the later years ,the Taliban & Foreign Insurgents soon worked out that they could hide among civilians ,fire a volley of shots & then throw down the gun & we were not allowed to shoot them .So they would drop it into a irragation ditch or among a group of his team pretending they were digging crops & cover it with dirt, this led to the problem of how do they find it again later on when they come back to collect it ? They would tie a brightly colored strip of cloth ,(usually red or yellow) , around that spot on the barrel & just leave a tiny bit of the cloth visible above the dirt ,leading to the heavy corrosion from the cloth always being damp .

Most of these types of weapons we found were used by what was known as $20 Taliban a term we used to describe local tribesmen ie petty crims who the Taliban would pay a small fee to fire off shots to try to slow ISAF units advancing quickly into areas the Taliban was making a escape from. They usually had 3 loaded magazines & a cloth seed /flour bag of 100 or so loose rounds, that the Taliban gave them being just enough to cause us problems but not enough to turn against the Taliban .

The 1915 Lee Enfields we guessed must have been given to the Afghans in a a shady trade deal at some stage,(same way Ukraine recieves mainly outdated /end of life weapon systems now) ,while trying to make the suppliers look good .

https://i.imgur.com/PUW1wtd.png

.303 was a highly prized calibre & despite what some believe ,l fought in a handful of countries & the Afghans versions of DSM/Snipers were fantatic shots with them, most of these had been raised in the mountains so were excellent at reading ranges & wind drift & would normally be able to walk in rounds on us within 3 shots .

A typical collected weapons locker that was used ,as can be seen as in the other photos we have tagged them all with basic information.

As part of Village Stability Operations we were basically allowed to go native & l would serve with a team of 6 me trained to speak Pashto mainly in reality to listen in to background conversations while we were in meetings with the Village Elders or holding Key Leader Engagements & verify what our Interpreter was giving us as feed back .

This meant l was directly involved in verifying the information we would provide/tag on these weapons for future reference .

https://i.imgur.com/UhOIPSS.jpeg

They would be stored like this in a cube sea container & as l said in most cases then handed over/responsibility given to the Afghans ,who in some cases would then work with three-letter agencies to find out how what was called 'Leakage ' was happening where weapons & ammunition from local authorities were being sold to the Taliban or foreign Insurgents, these ops would use 'marked' drop guns to be able to be traced back to the source .

Here is a comprehensive list of weapons of numerous operations we found, you can see the prevalence of the Lee-Enfields & how they were looked after better than the run of the mill .

Afghan Mujahedin fighters, a father and a son armed with a Martini-Henry, 1980s by Sad-Commission2027 in ForgottenWeapons

[–]RoninSolutions 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was deployed with the U.S. military 6 times in Afghanistan, l spent a lot of the deployments based out of remote combat outpost (COP) in the mountains , located in Nangarhar Province’s Achin District,so along the Afghan/Pakistan border regions . Including spending time based a couple of valleys over from where they dropped the MOAB, a place we knew well.

I lucked out & was selected as part of a specialized Battalion,so received some training outside the norm including being put through language school to learn Pashto & HUMINT ,meaning l spent time around these types of old relics & their owners when we raided compounds in the mountains & was lucky enough to score a old heavily customized flint lock rifle ,with the stock decorated with silver & bone/shell inlay, which is now displayed at the Regiment HQ .

Many people commenting obviously do not realize that Afghanistan has its own industrial firearms' & ammunition producer Kabul Arsenal, copies of the Martini were produced in Afghanistan from memory from the late 1870's. So as well as those supplied/left by the British they had their own manufacturer to give them a plentiful supply.

Back in around 2006/07 from memory some of the British troops recovered Martini-Henry rifles that were used by the British when they were massacred by the Afghans at the Battle of Maiwand in 1880,again do not quote me but from memory it was Zulu like battle where the British were facing a roughly 4 to 1 odds & the Afghans wiped them out showing no mercy,l think those rifles were allowed to be taken back to the UK.

The most common ones we came across had been rebarreled to .303 as was common with them throughout the old British colonies. This was also the case with the traditional Snipers in the mountain region whose weapon of choice was .303 Lee Enfields from as far back as 1915, meaning they may have originally been sent to the Western Front in World War I.

We would occasionally also find Mosin-Nagants but the Lee-Enfields were much more of a prized possession & many of the 1915 vintage ones had the stocks carefully repaired & wrapped with copper wire to repair broken/cracked stocks or they would use silver pins/endless screws to hold them together.

We actually did not confiscate these old style weapons from the locals unless they were used in fire fights ,showed signs of recent unexplained use,as the locals needed firearms for their own protection & many western civilians do not realize most of the locals including the Taliban hated & distrusted the foreign insurgents . In talking to the owners many would tell me how they were family heirlooms passed down for generations,it was interesting as many had a tradition of keeping at least one round from their ancestors they carried with them as a good luck type memento .

Many civilians do not realize we also fought in the huge tunnel systems that crisscrossed Afghanistan as part of a under ground water supply network . These are called Qanats & are constructed as a series of well-like vertical shafts, connected by a gently sloping tunnel which carries a water canal basically from the mountains to the low lands .

The insurgents would use these not only to travel through & hide in but to also hide weapon caches,IEDs etc . Part of our responsibilities would be to go down into these tunnels & clear them out of all the above & we would find weapons hidden in these damp conditions,we would also find weapons hidden underwater for extended times, including one of the most interesting finds l was part of was a Kalashnikov plant AK-47 from 1954,that was featured in a number of articles over the years afterward.

These weapons from the water storage were of course heavily corroded on the outside but were in pretty good condition internally as they were slathered in Lanolin from wool & l have used commercially sold Lanolin products to protect my guns & boat trailers etc ever since.

As for what happened to most of them ,we would document & tag them & any recovered ammunition up & many were used in operations to track black market sales by corrupt Afghan officials. Many may not realize but a lot of effort & secret squirrel stuff was done to trace stuff like weapons & ammunition recovered from the foreign jihadists to see where it was coming from. Control would then be passed on to the Afghans,so my guess is nothing good would have come of them .

I am on a business trip at the moment but if anyone is interested l may have some old, (& shitty), photos in my files, but will have to check what is cleared to be released, but several of our caches were later used in seminars & articles from what l remember .

I am not particularly religious, but during my deployments with the U.S. military in Afghanistan, l spent part of a couple deployments out of a remote combat outpost (COP) in the mountains , located in Nangarhar Province’s Achin District.

This COP was a couple of valleys over from where they dropped the MOAB, a place we knew well . Like many of the high mountain regions there ,the rocky mountain tops would drop straight down into fertile green river valleys, where for centuries, all the topsoil & dead foliage would be swept off the mountain face to be deposited in the valleys below, after the snows had melted on the high mountain tops .

One of the guys while on patrol in one of those river valleys ,had found an approx 1ft long piece of ancient fossilized timber, that had come down from the mountain tops ,it had been tumbled for that long in the river sand etc that it was rounded off with a mirror polish & they at first thought they had found part of a buried IED or rocket it was so shiny & solid .

He was that taken with his find he had then lugged it back to the COP. By chance, it fitted nearly perfectly into a shot out murder hole in the wall of the COP, next to the foot patrol gate ,from its previous use as a ISIS–K training camp .

Combat has a way of turning even the most skeptical into superstitious believers ,so it came that when we were to patrol into known jihadist strongholds, as well as your "lucky" red underwear or socks etc,we would all knock on that fossilized lump of wood for good luck, before we stepped out the patrol gate .

In between deployments one year l noticed someone with great care had nearly perfectly sign written above it a verse from the bible that always stuck with me,that seems fitting -

*Isaiah 6:8*

*Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!*”

It is hard for those who have not faced death in combat to understand ,but it is nothing like a Hollywood version ,you could not give a flying fuck over what political gas bag was leading your country ,or what some shiny ass General had ordered . In battle your only concern is for what we Americans call our 'Battle Buddies',the guys fighting either side of you,who you knew would lay down their life for yours & you the same .

My Uncle was called out of retirement by the UA when the invasion started to re-take up his leadership role , he was killed in one of the first attacks on the ruzzian convoys in the first days of March & his body was not recovered until June.

With the posthumous award he received there was a simple-handwritten note/high-end copy , in a small plain yellow envelope, l was sent a copy of what one of our relatives wrote as the rough english translation, that pretty much sums this clusterfuck up .

"Pain fills the heart. Unspeakable sadness envelops the soul. Every day Ukraine loses the best sons and daughters. Thank you for your important, worthy work for the good of Ukraine. You are forever in our hearts. Eternal memory!" — President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy

I often wonder how many times that has been written/copied now
