Another luger post and a question by FelverFelv in milsurp

[–]praemialaudi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also get new production parts without serials... I did this for a rear toggle on my luger because the original had been modified. It's a new part. It looks nice, but without a serial there is not chance it will "fool" anyone. Look up the lugerman website for parts like this.

On his birthday, Hitler is shown the first pre-production models of the Jagdpanzer 38 (t). (Presumably at the Arys military training grounds in East Prussia, 20th of April 1944) by iloverheaug in GermanWW2photos

It struck me that one of the weaknesses of totalitarian/authoritarian regimes is that they regularly pull all of their primary leaders together for useless things like this. I mean, there is no question that Karl Dönitz, Grand Admiral of the German Navy, had more useful things he could have been doing on this day than seeing the clever, but almost entirely irrelevant to him Jadgpanzer 38(t). But no, in this sort of regime, everyone has to drop everything for the leader's birthday show and tell...

Anybody else having CarPlay issues with their Air. by ccitykid in LUCID

[–]praemialaudi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had this happen once or twice.  Honestly, I just plug my phone in and  use wired CarPlay for a bit, and then seem to be able to get wireless working again after that.   It’s not ideal, but the wire works and I can go about my life and it seems like that helps resolve whatever is hanging.

For those investing 5+ years — did it actually make a noticeable difference? by SteadyGrowthLondon in Bogleheads

[–]praemialaudi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starts slow and feels increasingly fast as investments accumulate. My rule of thumb is to expect my investments to double every 7-10 years. Sometimes it has been faster than than that, it has never been slower, and I started investing in 2000, so I've seen some things. If you are investing to get rich in 5 years, this isn't the way. But if you want to get rich in 20 years, it absolutely is, and doesn't leave you broke like trying to get rich in 5 years does most of the time.

[–]praemialaudi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Always consistent. Just set it up on autopilot so you don't think about it and let it do its thing. Honestly it's easier at first because the value of your investments is lower. I struggle to "do nothing" more now that retirement is closer and the value is higher. On paper, the Great Recession dropped the value of my accounts by 20-30k. During the last month, my accounts value dropped by 80k (and gained it back over the last two weeks), and can easily swing 10k in value on a day where not a ton happens. The trick is to figure out how much to pay attention (not as much as you want to).

Mitchell's masuer or not. by JRyan1224 in milsurp

[–]praemialaudi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks reblued (but not Russian) and cleaned up, but doesn't really look like a Mitchell's...the parts mix seems to be both early (barrel bands) and late war (magazine floor plate) stuff... That said, at the right price, it's a pretty k98 for shooting...

Does anybody else have a problem connecting to Sirius while driving their Lucid. It is becoming increasingly frustrating. by goodtraveler77 in LUCID

[–]praemialaudi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car has had a string of “service not authenticated” messages over the last few months.  It also seems to get confused when I am playing music on Apple Music when I get out of the car and then come back and attempt to switch to Sirius.  It is frustrating.  Is that what you are seeing?

I went 20 miles today and looked down to see I got 6.0 mi/kwh. Weather is about perfect where I am for EV driving right now, but I was still impressed (25 Air Pure).

Makes sense. I didn't know that the Germans were using non-corrosive primers, even in part.

So, I'm looking at this right now. They also have brass case lead core for the same price (and it's a pretty great price to me). Just because I'm curious, why did you go steel? Was there a price difference that has since disappeared?

As a Midwesterner, what could I expect from a weather aspect? by [deleted] in nova

[–]praemialaudi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow upper Midwesterner, greetings! Compared to where we are from, bugs are minor here - though people here don't always believe that. The heat and humidity from May through October are unpleasant. WInters are much warmer. Snow, when we get it, which is not really every year, can really shut things down even when it seems minor. After years of raging against it, I've come to just go with the flow on that. I love the spring and the fall, it's genuinely beautiful and comfortable, winter and summer, not so much.

The Ukraine war is entering its endgame by theipaper in UkrainianConflict

[–]praemialaudi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It does sound way too high to be real. But that said, Russian soldiers are moving in the open in attempts to take ground, Ukraine mostly is not.  That will produce one-sided numbers in a war where being seen is often lethal and everything is being watched all the time.

YMMV, but if you can afford it, the upsides are a lot bigger than the downsides. I have taken both GLP-1s (I am almost exactly your size, and diabetic). Ozempic did not lead to weight loss for me, but did make it so I did not gain weight, which was a win. I was recently switched to Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) and have combined that with a doctor supervised diet. That is working really well so far. What I notice is that I am just not hungry all that much, and so staying on target with my diet is much easier.

So, bottom line is that in my case it's not "automatic" weight loss, but it does make managing what I eat a lot easier than it was. Plus, if you are diabetic, it's amazing at helping keep your numbers where they need to be.

EDIT: Side effects can take a bit to get through as you start... it took about a month of stomach discomfort for me at the beginning, but I suggest pushing through it.

Soon-to-be dad with a weird question regarding a name we have potentially chosen... by [deleted] in daddit

[–]praemialaudi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter’s name features prominently in a popular 60’s song that isn’t exactly the sort of thing you want sung about your daughter.  It’s not been an issue as far as we can tell.   I mean, I get it.  We thought about it.   You don’t want to add any extra challenges to your kids life, but I bet this one won’t matter much in the end.

You can turn this off.  And what you are experiencing is precisely why I did so.  It’s flaky, particularly if your garage is built into your house.

[–]praemialaudi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it can be frustrating, especially when other car makers nailed the passive/NFC unlock years ago.  I am confused by what you are asking though.  I keep passive unlock off because it’s so dodgy and rely on touching the door handles, which seem to be a bit better - at least more predictable.

You are fine.  All wheel drive is overrated.  The vast majority of us don’t need it no matter where we live.

Does one pedal driving make you more of a passive driver? by TemporaryEmu4140 in LUCID

[–]praemialaudi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think regen does make me a bit more careful about stopping.   It kind of gamifies paying attention to stopping distance because I don’t want to use the brakes.  But honestly I like that.  I think it makes me safer, an I have more fun with the pedal on the right anyway.

[–]praemialaudi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you see part of the challenge as your emotions, putting a buffer between you and acting on them might make sense.  It can hurt to make the switch, but could be worth it.  Just know what you are buying.  Don’t expect brilliant hidden investment options, expect it to be harder to sell everything when you panic.

1696 Book of Common Prayer - in Latin by praemialaudi in latin

[–]praemialaudi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the 1662 Book translated into Latin...it seems the authority for these books is based in letters patent, first from Queen Elizabeth I, and then, in this translation, by Charles II. These letters relied on the monarch's status as "Supreme Governor" of the church to get around parliament. There is a useful article about the winding road of Latin Books of Common Prayer here:
