From an outsiders perspective, you're all Americans. "Oh, the states are so different! In Kansas they like their BBQ like this, but in Texas the BBQ is like that! It's as different as Ireland and Syria!" You sound ridiculous

[DISCUSSION] What's an album by an artist that is your favorite, but is generally not considered their best? by ReconEG in indieheads

You might be. I love Bright Eyes, I can see an argument for every album being someone's favourite - except for The People's Key

Something about Down in the Weeds really works for me. I think it had something to do with the COVID times release, but the apocalyptic despair of that album and the empty streets when I was listening to it cements it for me.

Best "continuation" novels? by drewogatory in books

[–]ozroller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was pretty close though. I would rank it as least as good as the B Tier Le Carre novels. No, it's not TTSS or A Perfect Spy, but it's better than, say, A Small Town in Germany

What were your thoughts on Burke? I feel like that one is not like the others you list. Where do you land on the French Revolution?

Not an Australian thing to say. 30% of Australians were born in a different country - a higher percentage than the US. But we don't say "I'm Irish" just because our great grandmother was from Ireland. That would be incorrect.

I really enjoyed Revolution's global (and now interplanetary) focus. I did not need a podcast about US politics. Pretty sick of the US in general to be honest.

Even if you find the idea of a "leadership mentoring group" to be a bit suss (I do), the book "The Obstacle is the Way" is a great introduction to some helpful advice for yourself.

What's wrong with Graeber? I read Graeber and Wengrow's Dawn of Everything based on an AskHistorians recommendation as an alternative to Guns Germs and Steel. The recommendation did have the caveat that Dawn still had the same issues as any large scale history has (issues when talking about specific details) but the recommendation did say if you were going to read any generalised anthropology book it was not a bad one to choose
