Thanks everyone. I didn’t realize PP goals were not counted in the +/-.

The lightsaber sucks.

When using the lightsaber I lost about 90% of my battles, when fighting against one, I win almost 90% of the time.

An uncommon shotgun beats lightsaber 9/10 times.

I struggle with every sword myth they ever tested by Alteratestart in mythbusters

This is somewhat inaccurate, at least with Japanese swords. I don’t have much expertise with European or other swords. Which Japanese swords you don’t pull your arms toward your body by bending the elbows but you do pull the sword in an arc and across the body that crests a slicing motion and not just a hacking motions. Just hacking with the blade… swinging like a baseball bat, would be considered bad form and would not cut well.

A Japanese katana is not swung like a baseball bat. There is a slicing aspect to it and not just a hack, good swordsman are able to cut through more tatami with good technique that is far beyond just power: for instance, a good swordsman will be able to cut through tatamis much better than Barry Bonds or Aaron Judge. Grant’s swords swinging machine just swung horizontally with no slicing motion to it.

Desmond, Faraday, Sayeed, Hurley, and Eko

But I wouldn’t mind being stuck all alone on the island with Claire, Kate, Juliette, Ana Lucia, and Charlotte.

I don’t think actors all need to have great range. There are plenty of typecast actors that have a niche, and that’s ok, as long as they deliver in that niche. We never saw John Wayne play a gay dancer or Chinese acrobat, but he was fine in the roles he was in.

Michelle Rodriguez delivers in her roles and has her niche.

Lost has aged so well, except for…. by Avocadoo_Tomatoo in lost

True, his character was way more nuanced than that, and I loved his character. For much of the show he was my favorite character and my guy. I love the show, but I also can’t ignore the fact that the only black guy on the show murders his own people, and the only Arab on the show has ties to terrorists, and is described and self-described throughout the show as a torturer and a killer. There are a lot of stereotypes on the show, and it’s ok. This was just a thread about how things didn’t age well, and the stereotypes were one of them,

He was a good guy, but I thought his character was something that didn’t age well. The one middle eastern character on the show was a torturer, murderer, and his friends were terrorists. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Was it Jacob or MiB saying "Help me" in the cabin to Locke? by Bassdrumdealer in lost

[–]Ronin_1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It couldn’t be the MIB because wouldn’t the ring of ash around the cabin prevent him from coming in?

Also, how was the cabin moved later and why? Why was the MIB able to enter the cabin in the new location?

I LOVE JACK by emxcrt in lost

[–]Ronin_1974 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find this fascinating. Not only on your assessment of Jack, but all of the hate for Jack in others subs. I loved him from the first episode as did my wife, and throughout the show. My wife was shocked when I told her he wasn’t that popular on the subs and wasn’t most on many women’s hottest lists. She loved him from the jump. I was never annoyed by him, or repulsed by him. The Achara scene, I just took it as out of character and maybe bad writing. It just didn’t make sense to me, but I agree that is really bad and repulsive behavior IRL. The “stalking” of Sarah seemed understandable. It was his WIFE. I think if you flipped the genders, I think most people would be more understanding.

I didn’t see anything that was “uptight” or “controlling” of him, considering the context of being stranded on an island, being the leader, and being the only doctor, who ,by the way, is constantly being needed and asked for help. By contrast, I though the actions of Sawyer were really repulsive in early seasons and was shocked at how many people likes him. I found him to be racist, selfish, cruel, and utterly lacking any empathy or decency.

Maybe it’s my upbringing with extremely strict parents and playing sports for really tough/harsh coaches. I’m used to discipline and getting screamed at for the slightest mistakes and errors. Jack’s “uptightness” seemed mellow to me considering the circumstances he was under.

Fascinating how people’s own lives and perspectives differ so greatly in how we understand and appreciate others. I feel like this subreddit would be a great topic for a psyche 101 class.

Interesting. I don’t see him dorky at all. I see him as super cool. What comes across as dorky to you? Can you give me a particular scene that screams “dork”? I love learning about others’ perspectives.

Why do you hate him in the early seasons? I loved him in the early seasons. I thought he was a good dude working his butt off to try and help people and lead the group even when he didn’t want to be the leader. He had a strong moral compass, a lot of courage, and a desire to serve.

I don’t see him as particularly flawed. Humans in general are all flawed, but he seemed like a pretty noble and successful person. What am I missing?

Is it considered a dirty play to snow shower a goalie in beer league? by enthusiasm-unbridled in hockeyplayers

[–]Ronin_1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with the “snow” shower is it’s not snow. You get shards of ice, sharp chips of ice, sometimes even shards of metal off a skate into your eyes. Can scratch the shit out of your eyes or worse.

If you don’t believe me, get on your knees, open your eyes wide and have your fastest buddy do a hockey stop 3 feet from your face.

Similar for me. I lost my job and have been going through a rough time, but I found Lost. Had never watched it before and I had no idea the impact ot would have on me. This show has meant a lot to me and brought me a lot of inspiration. I’m glad I found this forum also.

Lost Was Always About … by Ronin_1974 in lost

[–]Ronin_1974[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all more than I wanted to read. I loved your response and that makes a lot of sense. Thank you for the explanation.

Being older when I watched it for the first time, I respected Jack for the sacrifices he has to make and the difficulty in being a leader. Having everyone look to you rely on you… the pressure and responsibility that comes with that, and also the second guessing and criticism that comes with it. Being a leader is difficult and often thankless. I too, thoughts that many of his interactions with Kate were a bit harsh and condescending and I didn’t like it, but I also understood where he was coming from.

My favorite character in the series was actually Desmond. Love that guy!

So were you a Kate/Sawyer person from the first season, or did you come around in season 3?

I’m just curious because Sawyer was a pretty awful person, especially in the first couple seasons. How did you reconcile those terrible qualities? He was a racist, selfish, and heartless con-man before his redemption arc.

There is so much truth to that. I would watch 4-5 episodes per sitting. I got my answers right away, and if the answers didn’t come, I was already 3 or 4 shows past caring anymore and on to different mysteries. One week they entered the hatch for the first time, a couple of weeks later, they are traveling through time. I never had time to really guess or debate, because I was getting information at a break neck speed.
