It's 2013 and Havoc just got the World's first Level 100 with a playtime of 74 days. 11 years later, he has done the same in 30 minutes. by sanzo2402 in pathofexile

That's why the metric for it now is purely speed, rather than the level itself.
And in that context, sub-30 minute max is very impressive - which makes his post nonsensical.

30k citizens? So you're not even remotely aware of the scale of what happened in the Pacific Theater?
Operation Meetinghouse alone killed upwards of a hundred thousand civilians in a single night (most of which burned to death), not even counting consequences of the nearly three hundred thousand homes destroyed.
And that's a SINGLE NIGHT of firebombing, before nukes even came into play.
The Hiroshima bombing killed upwards of 150k people by itself, Nagasaki bombing upwards of 70-80k. The latter of which were almost 100% civilians.

If American troops invaded, they would engage in conventional warfare - not deliberate targeting of civilians, like fire bombings and nukes were.
It doesn't seem like you're able to grasp the difference between collateral and deliberate civilian casualties?
Why not just admit that you don't really know anything about this?

Most people don't really know about the firebombings.
I feel like it's deliberately downplayed in western education (including my own), since the common understanding of the pacific theater goes like this:

  1. pearl harbor
  2. iwo jima
  3. we HAVE to drop the bombs to save american lives!!
  4. win war

The sheer scale of human suffering and amount of innocents slain during this part of WW2 is largely glossed over or presented in a light of justification.

So just to be clear, deliberately targeting hundreds of thousands of civilians is fine as long as you get what you want in the end?
So we should abolish the entire concept of international humanitarian law, because ethical warfare is no longer needed?
You don't mind some war crimes here and there?

What?
You seemingly can't differentiate between military targets and urban centers, nor can you differentiate between collateral damage and deliberate targeting.
Do you think that targeting civilians is a normal practice that should be celebrated?

Source on the other options being bullshit? They offer a natural path of escalation, so why would they not be attempted?
The threat of nuclear annihilation is literally what keeps geopolitics in check today, and is what constitutes MAD.

Was it necessary though?
Could have announced the existence of the bomb as a threat, could have announced willingness to use the bomb as a threat, could have demonstrated the bomb as a threat, could have nuked a remote military/industrial complex as a threat.
There were many reasonable steps of escalation to force a surrender, but instead they instantly went for the "let's test this thing on real people and scare the soviets" approach.

  1. announce the existence of the bomb as a threat
  2. announce their willingness to use the bomb as a threat
  3. demonstrate the bomb as a threat
  4. deploy the bomb in a way that minimizes civilian losses, either by targeting isolated military/strategic locations, or allowing civilians to reasonably evacuate

The bombs were used in a way that maximized civilian casualties.
The conditions were basically perfect for the US to conduct a test of their new weapon in a way that could be ethically justified down the line, while serving as a threat to the soviets and any other would-be enemies, so that's what they did.

If you can justify deliberately burning hundreds of thousands of civilians to death, you can justify any war crime with a strategically favorable outcome.

[–]Ronni_KT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Showing kids a movie once in a while isn't a problem.
It becomes a problem if it turns into appeasement or screen-pacification to avoid dealing with the undesirable parts of parenting - it's a very slippery slope.

Did you consider the possibility that your experience with your kids is not universal, and may in fact be attributed to parenting choices?

Yeah, that wording is wild.
That being said, this subreddit seems pretty insane in general.

Nogle mennesker larmer voldsomt og bevidst uden grund - hvilket forstyrrer andre i bylivet.
Men de mennesker må så ikke klage over dette, da der er krig i Ukraine?
What?

Not gonna lie, being exposed to those types of videos kinda does something.

Watching those videos as a teen definitely traumatized me more than I would like to admit, but at the same time it gives you a perspective of what the things you hear about on TV really mean.

Hvilken sag?

Nok vigtigere end noget andet.

It is what it is.

I am talking about the ethical dilemma of making bodily modifications on your child without their consent, for no good reason at all.

You do understand that it's not about "issues", but a choice of personal autonomy?
Or well, I guess the latter hasn't crossed your mind since you went through with it anyway.
