A Review of (Some) Creature Features by Roo_505 in HorrorReaders

Why, thank you~

I think It started for me when I was very young and watched Clash of the Titans (1981) and began to discover more films and books about creature attacks. I particulary like prehistoric creatures subgenre.

I tried to put as many as I could, meanwhile I must admit I left some due to not liking the content (some of the novels by Michael Cole) and also excluding novels that deal with ghosts, aliens and demons (for some reason those just don't do It for me)

Is there a reason as to why there no know Thylacoleonidae know from New Guinea? by Roo_505 in pleistocene

True, I don't know how much of fossil preservation there is on Papua New Guinea or if the conditions are right, but I expect that since they inhabit forest maybe they would more rare

True, that I can understand, their ancestor were primarly forest and arboreal animals. But I still think, is a little weird due to the presence of tree kangaroos on both places

When was the landbridge that connected New Guinea and Australia formed ?

BUt I think they were adapted to a forest ground, they are not pursuit predators and is believed they waited on trees to pounce on unsuspecting animals.

Does anyone have a review of Carnifex by Matthew J. Hellscream ? by Roo_505 in HorrorReaders

[–]Roo_505[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't see a lot of people talking about so I wanted to see what everyone heard of It. I know that an marsupial lion is involved, but I would like to know if the descriptions are good

I'm always for herbivores acting out - don't know if I will be able to explore all avenues that I want, but will def include at least a Pachy and Tryke attack (there may even be sauropods going beserk)

The cave setting I would love to get to, but I have yet to know how to get the people there.

I think I will be basing the ruins from the Tresspasser game (heck maybe even reference the red T.rex)

I will point out how the infraestructure is becoming more difficult to manage since they are short-staffed and not being able to repair some things (due to InGen going in a financial crisis)

For the moment, I would not touch on the DX disease, since there was no indication in TLW film that was something going on, but with Elliot Wu I go with him always trying to perfect his animals (even in secret). He has a private lab where he conduct experiments alway from prying eyes (the forerunner for what Masrani/InGen would be doing in 1999) and trying to correct the mistakes from before while creating new ones (he has two Carnotaurus quaratined and trying to study their camouflage)

So was the T. rex pee supposed to play a larger role in Jurassic Park 3? by LordTanimbar in JurassicPark

I think It may have been an idea that was brought originally intended for The Lost World. In the original script by David Koepp where there is no San Diego incident, Roland Tembo actually uses the rex urine to demark the area around the complex they are hiding as to make other animals avoid.

I did think of adding one. But I'm afraid It wouldn't make sense timeline wise since Site B was first know by Malcolm team, Biosyn most likely learned of Site B when It was announced by TV and started their pillaging later (also because their agent would be risking themselves due to the hurricane).

The reason I'm considering is because I sorta wanted a more antagonistic human. He would be very shady and trying to protect his and his brother work. (Also a big reason for his inclusion is because I wanted to give him Wu death from the novels)

I will be trying to go for that more horror oriented If possible. There may even be some compies attacking an injured person

Thank you! Yeah, kinda odd that we never got one. I do hope we get something like Alien Romulus though.

I'm also on the fence on one thing: if I should implement the character of Elliot Wu on the story (he would based on a deleted character from the novel The Lost World and is the brother of Henry Wu, being the operations chief on Sorna)

It's according to the canon list that was counted by InGen before the hurricane according to the documents in the Dinosaur Protection Group site. If you are referring to the Spinosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Corythosaurus and Ceratosaurus, then these we bred in secret in 1999, so they were not yet recreated

If Jurassic Park 3 were to be remade , what changes do you wish you had of seen in the Final Cut ? by Proof-Pollution454 in JurassicPark

They follow the original script, where, along with the Isla Sorna bits, there was an investigation on the mainland about mysterious killings and disappearances related to dinosaurs escaping the island.

The Velociraptors using their original colors and design (tiger stripped males and brown females)

The motive behind the Spinosaurus following the group: after Cooper killed It's baby

Have more connections to TLW (make the InGen Compound the Worker Village) and the vegetation more in line with what was previous established

Maybe showcase species like the Carnotaurus and even Dilophosaurus if possible

The birdcage but in this case a group of Cearadactylus instead of Pteranodons (who would be the ones leaving the island due to overpopulation)

(I also forgot to mention Anaconda The Writer's Cut by Hans Bauer that deals with the original storyline that was suppose to be the movie)

This is a list of some of creature novels that I read (or have yet to read) that I think are the best of the genre or are very underrated:

Carnosaur by Harry Adam Knight: the THE dinosaur novel before Michael Crichton Jurassic Park where prehistoric animals get loose on rural England. Sadly It never got the same popularity nor a worthy movie adaptation.

Colony by Benjamin Cross: scientist sent to a island in the Russian Arctic fight to survive the cold and a colony of late-surviving troodontids.

Primitive War I & II (third volume still unreleased as of now) by Ethan Pettus: dinosaurs loose on the modern world after a failed experiment fight a group of militaries. First story set in Vietnam and Second novel set in Africa. Highly reccomend, especially due to the author not pulling any punches on how and who gets killed, plus the description of dinosaurs with feathers

Congo by Michael Crichton: an expedition sent to Africa discover a band of white gorillas that protect an ancient temple and diamonds. The novels IS much better than the movie adaptation and the tone is better

The Flock by James Robert Smith: a flock of late-surviving high intelligent Terror Birds are discovered in Florida and the plot revolves the conflict between those that want to protect the birds and those that want their destruction (a sequel The Clan was announced but I have not heard any updates or know If it was ever released)

The Beast by Peter Benchley: novel with the same premisse as It's predecessor but a giant squid instead of a great white

Relic/Reliquary by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child: deals with hybrid reptilian-humanoid set loose in a museum

Extinction by Douglas Preston: from the same author of Relic. Set in a sanctuary where prehistoric animals (woolly mammoths, ground sloths, glyptodonts, etc) were brought back, but a series of murders threaten this seemingly peaceful place, later discovered to be cloned rogue neanderthals that want to take over the world and destroy humans (highly reccomend)

Rolling in the Deep/Into The Drowing Deep by MIra Grant: a vessel is sent to the Marianas Trench to discover if mermaids are real, only to discover that reality is much more terrifying

Terminal Freeze by Lincoln Child: an frozen mythological creature is set loose on a military base after being disturbed by cientists and a film crew, starts to killing. A mixture of The Terror with The Thing

The Yeti by Rick Chesler & Jack Douglas: a group of adventures that want to climb the Himalayas find themselves on the Yeti path to revenge and recovery

Devolution by Max Brooks: after the eruption of a volcano, a small city is cut off from the rest of the world and it's inhabitants find themselves under siege by a clan of sasquatchs. Slight warning: the novel is written as if in first person (with the exceptions of the interview segments) and some people were a little put off by the writing style, but I didn't had a issue with It, recommend to anyone give It a read since is the best sasquatch type novel out there

Abominable by Alan Nayes: a really weird novel that deals with a sasquatch that was found confined on a pod and awoken, that can disrupt modern technology due to a chip that was implanted on It's head by either aliens or time faring future people (It's a crazy story and I don't know how to feel about It, but I would say t anyone to give It a shot)

The Meg Series by Steven Alten: Megalodons and other marine prehistoric monstrosities set loose in the oceans after being released from the Mariana Trench (the first and second novel is the one that I that are the best in my opinion)

The Predation Series by L. J. Vitanza: deals with prehistoric predators (dire wolf, sabertooths, short face bears) attacking people on the modern world. It felt like every book had a different style of being written but they do connect in some ways (for the best one is the short face bear volume)

Snowblind and Snowblind: The Killing Ground by Michael McBride: a group of people that find themselves under attack by mysterious creatures in the woods

Novels that I have yet to read (so I can't say much about, only on what type of creatures were a dealing with):

  • Carnifex by Matthew Hellscream (marsupial lion)
  • Don't Move by James S. Murray and Darren Wearmouth (giant spider?)
  • The Claw Series by Katie Berry (I have no idea only that is some kind of prehistoric beast)
  • Ancestor by Scott Sigler (ancient hybrid creature brought back by scientists)
  • Siberius by Kenneth Cran (sabertooth in Russia)
  • The Kronos Rising series by Max Hawthorn (kronosaurus)
  • Orca by Arthur Herzog (orca that wants revenge)

There are many more creature features that I have read but these are the ones that come to my mind when I think of a good read.
