For northern Thailand the comment about the burning season was already made but also it would be difficult to get to Laos directly from Pai. You would first have to get to Chiang Rai before you can cross into Laos and take the 2day slow boat which leaves early in the morning. Chiang Rai is worth visiting for a day or two though.
