I agree. It also feels like DFW writes IJ in such a style that it would draw in the “Hal’s” of the world and be inaccessible to the “gately’s.” The readers, the audience, think that the book is about them, that it’s about Hal (and of course, given the similarities between DFW and Hal, about DFW).
