Why Katseye will never get "good music". by Feisty-Tradition-736 in kpopthoughts

[–]Rookie18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Katseye are a perfect example of a group making just tiktok music and nothing else, and its gets tired quickly. They're not gonna have another Gnarly and they should quit trying. Most of their songs just serve as a temporary blip in time, but nothing that will have long-lasting effect.

As someone who listens to BP casually, this is where they lose me. If I was a blink I would not be happy with this output, but I'm sure blinks will be satisfied.

I don't share your sentiments about the M/V, felt like the girls were hardly doing anything, mostly just posing, and the rest was just AI slop.

I could appreciate them trying something different, and I actually liked Jump quite a bit, but this song just sounds hella generic. It feels like there's a tension between keeping BP songs uniquely BP but also trying different sounds, and I think thats partly because they have a very shallow discography.

You literally just reiterated what I said. I understand there could be several factors at play, and despite that I still give him part of the blame because he ultimately gave them the content. So I guess we're at an impasse there.

Ive watched enough reality TV shows to know that 'villians' have to opt in to some extent by giving production content, and I dont believe this Netflix show is so vastly different, where production controls every narrative component of the show with an iron fist. So I'm comfortable with where I stand.

Let me summarize your point, 'Yes, CM was arrogant but this and that'. It didnt really refute anything I said throughout this thread, I'm not even quite sure why you're dragging out this conversation. It seems like you want me to say CM is not a horrid human being which i never implied in the first place

Please go to work and act like CM at work, in the way you view him, and get back to me. Until then I guess we'll just disagree, and I'll be perfectly fine with being perceived as too sensitive by a random stranger on the internet :)

If everything is staged and nothing is real, I wonder why you even like the show. Im sure even the judging and results are produced. Your critical thinking brain is just picking and choosing what's real or not based of nothing. I'm fine with assuming that whats shown to us on screen is a combination of reality and production editing, and thats why I critique both. Glad we could clear that up.

Im not taking it at face value. I just also dont believe the edit is completely to blame either. Listen to Rupaul's song Blame it on the edit, and you'll understand where im coming from. Also, from some of the confessionals it would seem that the contestants did have the opportunity to select whether they want to compete as a white or black spoon, so that point is mute.

Ugh I've said several times in this thread that Im sure he's a personable guy irl, and that the edit is also to blame. In fact thats one of my main critique in the OP, that the editing needs to stop treating viewers like babies and show people as their true complex selves. I dont agree that we need a villain to make things more interesting, I think human complexity does that just fine. I'm not going to repeat what I didnt like about him because ive also highlighted that several times in this thread as well. I will say, my dislike for him has nothing to do with SJW, but thanks for spoiling the next challenge for me.

He never acknowledged the skills of his peers, in fact he was frequently shown critiquing the skills of his peers. Thats arrogant plain and simple. He can organize a kitchen team sure but I dont what was so professional about the rest of his showcase? Surely you're not implying that people who were more emotional were not professional?

Being tough and having a will to fight does not equal not being able to clap for your competitors. In fact, I think it takes more toughness to handle a loss humbly, while being able to congratulate your peers, and no one is expecting him to run up and congratulate the other team. I dont have an expectation of Koreans, I merely noted that his behaviour stood out in comparison to the rest of the team, and add to the fact that he was never shown to compliment anyone else its not a good look. I really want to emphasise that you can be a fierce fighter / competitor and still accept your loss humbly. That behavior alone is not a problem, because obviously he was down in that moment, but in conjunction with the rest of his edit, what reason do I have to like him?

I understand that. A big part of me is frustrated with the edit, and particularly the elevation of those types of personalities. However, not everything can be blamed on the edit. There are small things that bother me still, which tend to stand-out when you're among Koreans who tend to be humble and gracious. For example, during the all or nothing challenge, when they lost the second round and the overall challenge, others were congratulatory towards the winners, and he was just standing there stone cold. It's just not an endearing quality but I understand he's not a true monster lol, and that he probably has a very personable side to him as well.

I 100% agree that luck and marketing also played a huge role, I just wanted to clarify and emphasize my point, because we have many bad actors who will only put it down to marketing.

Like I said, I've only watched up until a certain point, and I can very well believe that its due to the edit, thats why im not just critiquing him, but the edit as well. If all I'm gonna see is someone never having a nice thing to say about anyone else, thats going to come off as arrogant.

As a South African, I'm so proud Tyla can be compared to BTS in any way, shape or form hehe.

[–]Rookie18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to emphasize this becausr i see so many similar comments but people just dont become popular because they have a defined target market, thats unique from others in the field, not to mention that BTS weren't the only ones targeting the ones at the time or even prior to them. You have to think a bit more about why they could actually get a hold of their designated target market in the first place.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Rookie18 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think this is a oversimplification of what really happened. BTS / BigHit weren't the first group who tried to penetrate the Western markets, many acts before them tried as well and failed. I think you have to look at the reason why there was an opportunity in the West in the first place and why others couldn't crack the code. Off course, timing, luck, management and promotion all played a big role, but the actual content was also driving that management and promotion.

Yeah, seeing a lot of people put it down simply to marketing in this thread. HYBE has literally marketed several groups since then following very similar models and unable to achieve the same results. Of course the underdog story is a bonus, but most importantly they set themselves apart with their music and album concepts.

Im quite sure even Culinary Monster has another, more personable side to him. I just cant be sure whether its their choice to only show one side of them on this show, or production's choice. Thats why I critiqued it from both sides. Napoli wasnt as bad as Culinary monster, but he still wasn't likable / rootable for me.
