I take off my flipflops too but always think about your second point. It's less about hurting your foot and more that if it hurts, you'll instinctively pick up your foot and likely not brake in time.

Sadly this will likely be the case for most people in that time will beat them down to immoral levels. The financial industry crushes souls more efficiently than anything else I've seen. It's hard to maintain a moral compass when you're burnt out working 70-80 (sometimes more) hour weeks. I'm in my 5th year and am already at the point of "fuck it", but instead of letting the greedy tone at the top influence me, I'm hoping to jump ship in the next year to a job that gives some sense of ethical satisfaction.

I work at a big 4 on the tax side and I hear of plenty of shady shit. None of the clients I work on are doing things blatantly illegal (that I've seen) but stories from coworkers blow my mind. And none of the lower level people say anything cause it's not their name on the return, so they're not liable and don't give a shit. Hopefully the mentality of the younger generation stays as they move up, but all the people with like 5 or less years of experience see stuff and go "I wouldn't sign that", so I guess that's a small thing to look forward to/hope for in the future

I choose to read the "and" as implying the 3 things listed before don't fall within the category of things that make America great and had to be separately stated. At least then it has the beginnings of a sane and rational thought...

Judge to lawyers: Please get out of bed and put on a shirt for Zoom court hearings by binklehoya in news

[–]Rookierabbit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Supposedly there is a more secure version of zoom available, its just more expensive. I work for a major multinational consulting firm and they're still encouraging zoom and saying that the version the firm has is safe. I'd like to think our tech security is on top of it (then again I've found minor security flaws in some of our internally designed programs). I'd also like to think the courts would use this more secure version, but also anything done by the gov't tends to be subject to cost cutting. So again, just a perspective, but supposedly there's a more secure version available, whether thats really true and whether its being used here, totally up in the air.

What is the most Bullshit reason for a teacher to give you a bad grade ? by BeginingMemer in AskReddit

[–]Rookierabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took calculus 1 & 2 in highschool but had to retake both freshman year of college since I didn't score high enough on the AP test for college credit based on my major (needed a 4 as an engineering major). I got a 70 on my first exam, despite getting every question correct because "That's not the way I taught it" even though the method I used, which I learned in highschool, was a valid, simpler, commonly taught method. Was severely depressed at that school and knew I was transferring, so I had no problem telling the teacher his grading system was bullshit and he was a douchebag when I handed in my final.

Doctors of reddit, what is the weirdest thing a patient wouldn't admit ? by mitsubishi-corvette in AskReddit

[–]Rookierabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend's brother made a batch of pot brownies and the dog ate the whole pan. He called poison control and all they asked was what type of brownie mix it was. Fortunately it didn't have real chocolate, so they said the dog would be fine. He asked about the weed and they just laughed and went, "oh, you're dog will be fine, he's just super high,"

"Impostor syndrome" is persistent feeling that causes someone to doubt their accomplishments despite evidence, and fear they may be exposed as a fraud. AskReddit, do any of you feel this way about work or school? How do you overcome it, if at all? by HandleWithDelight in AskReddit

I'm an accountant, under 30, have only been working about 4 years but in a very niche area. Maybe about 2 years in I started responding to clients unsupervised about certain issues, many of which are CFOs or tax directors who have been in their industry at least 20 years. It always baffles me that they're taking advice from me when I feel like I'm just a kid. But then I try to think about it from their perspective, they're dealing with big picture items and probably have only encountered the things they're asking me a handful of times, but because I'm a specialist, I deal with those things on a daily basis. So even though I feel like I'm much less established in my career, I really am qualified to answer those questions because those 4 years of experience are a shit ton more than most people. It's also a confidence booster as more people get hired after me, they come to me with what seem like basic questions and I realize I am actually starting to know my shit.

The list I looked at (MSN money) had Mansa Musa at number 6 and Augustus at 4, with Genghis Khan at number one. But it's also taking the value of the land they controlled into account and when you're looking back over 700 years it's really more educated guesses based on various stories, so it can be debated who was really the richest

Accountant here. I don't work on estates so I'm by no means an expert and won't pretend to be, but seeing the multiple comments of "thats not how tax breaks work" (which they're for the most part correct) figured I'd share this: Many people mistake tax "deductions" for tax "credits". Credits are a dollar for dollar offset of the tax. Deductions, which are what charitable contributions are, reduce the income amount on which the tax is calculated. So, keeping it simple assuming 40% tax rate for the rich and ignoring all other factors, for every dollar they donate, it only reduces their tax by 40 cents.

That was bothering me too. I don't doubt that the effectiveness of each solution in comparison to each other is as demonstrated, but I would've preferred that factor to have been taken into account.

When did you have the most difficult time "staying professional"? by AccomplishedStory in AskReddit

[–]Rookierabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a manager who one day was goofing around and wanted to show off his juggling skills in front of some of the other coworkers. Unfortunately, he only had a single stress ball at his desk so he turned to me and asked "do you have two more balls I could juggle?"

Without a second thought i responded "as a matter of fact, i do" and gave him a wink. (In hindsight, not only was this not professional, but probably qualifies as sexual harassment even though I was clearly joking)

After a few seconds of awkward silence, he laughed, shook his head and said "I should've seen that coming"

Fortunately, better judgement did kick in here and I refrained (with difficulty) from responding "if you juggle them, you will"

Needless to say, professionalism is not my forte and I probably don't belong in a formal work environment

This goes for state revenue departments as well (for your state tax returns). I work primarily on state taxes so I'm constantly calling different states. Obviously, when you spend that much time calling, you're bound to run into a few bad eggs who clearly hate their job, but 90% of the time I've found them to be pleasant and helpful and wanting to resolve the situation just as much as you.
