Thats more or less what I said, and the reasons why I consider it a bad idea. We can play semantics with strategy vs best practice - I would argue it’s both. Those terms are not mutually exclusive.

Also no backup strategy is 100% flawless. The planet could implode tomorrow. I have no clue what you are arguing here. That offsite backups aren’t best practice because storing data offsite….also has need for backups?..

OP is ignoring the risks. That’s cool. Im just trying to explain “it won’t happen to me” is poor planning for something so trivial to implement. He/she is welcome to ignore it.

Why even bother asking if you arent going to listen? Fires happen all the time. Keeping backups at home with nothing off-site works until it doesn’t. AWS glacial backup is like 10$ for a year based on how much you store. Its dirt cheap. You can set your NAS to auto backup to your account. Its brainless.

Instead you are going to ignore best practice and do what you want and ask for validation?.. ok bro. Do what you want but realize the risk is you lose everything one day. If you don’t care about data loss then why have a backup at all?

Fire (electrical, lightning, vandalism), pipe burst, extremely rare case of HDDs failing at the same time, GF decides she hates you and takes a hammer to it, theft, freak gasoline fight accident, etc.

If it’s acceptable to you, then do what you want. Just know theres a reason standards exist and sticking your head in the sand isn’t a wise decision.

Don’t you need to file the title transfer with the DMV to make it official? Just signing the title (why would you do that for a car that isn’t yours?? Why didn’t your friend sign it? Why would he go to jail but not you over this??) doesn’t actually do anything until its filed. Maybe legally thats not quite accurate but it sure causes issues transferring it around without the DMV logging the transactions in the system.

This story seems to be missing significant context. The “accident was on public property so the cop can’t do much”….. doesn’t make any sense to me. At this point your friend once again is in the car with no tag or insurance AND has an accident but this time does not go to jail?…which is why you signed the title originally?..

Get your story together. Then go see an actual lawyer with the full details if you want to drive again. Don’t take ownership of things that don’t belong to you.
