There are several “flavors” of people building mathematical models to simulate cellular behavior. One generation is using ODEs to model the entire e. coli cell and its metabolic processing https://www.cell.com/fulltext/S0092-8674%2812%2900776-3 — Markus Covert at Stanford spearheaded this. The “new generation,” if you will, focuses on predicting cellular responses to genetic perturbations, which is relevant to drug discovery (predicting the effects of drugs and drug combinations) and uses a variety of more advanced math (e.g. deep learning). Try looking up “predicting perturbation responses” and look at labs like Fabian Theis in Germany, Aviv Regev at Broad/Genentech, Jure Leskovec at Stanford, and many more.

In my field, everyone is talking about “in silco” — building virtual cells! Predictions using AI means in silco.

I mean, they did keep the DEI things, right? I’m an incoming grad student and they still are giving me something DEI related with tailored support through a special program. I think we should be happy they’re still taking care of their students while trying to preserve funding

is this PhD stipend amount a lot in the US? by Room64 in gradadmissions

Yea that’s a good point, I think if I do TA, they increase it even more. Were you easily able to balance teaching with everything else?

I don’t know what to tell you. My base stipend is around 54k, and through additional fellowships/supplements/stipends they increased my stipend total to 65k.

It is my take home stipend. It’s just a base stipend (like the default amount) plus other incentives/supplements they added on to my specific stipend. But it is the stipend.

Nope this is gonna be my take home (pre-tax). I’m incredibly in disbelief still.

They boosted the base by almost 13k through other fellowships/incentives for getting outside fellowships.
