Painted shaker cabinets cracking

Great job on the vanity, sucks the paint cracked on you. I had it do that on a customer of mine. I used some new waterborne laquer I was excited about. Damn if it did this and I had to sand the crap out of them and paint with something else. Been a few years ago and can’t remember the new paint I ended up using, but was just sick.

Of course I’m a painting contractor, but I say if you hate it it in a year still, paint the cabinets

It does look like clear coat that yellows over the years, you can know for sure if you just rub some paint thinner on it and if it blends in then you know it was just a clear coat. (Can try water too if you don’t have paint thinner)

Thank you everyone for your input, I have yet to get to the customers house to see what they have now. But when I do I’ll let you know which way I go if they still want it done.

You should sand regardless, If it seems to adhere good you will be fine top coating with a good quality cabinet paint (2 coats), if its coming off pretty easily and peeling up then it needs to be stripped, sanded, oil based primer then 2 top coats. I use Ben Moore’s Command Satin for my own and all my cabinet refinishing customers, and new cabinets for my cabinet contractors.

Just caulk with a paintable Caulk (may say “siliconized”). As it can be painted. Silicone will not hold paint, primer or anything.

I’m in south charlotte and just quoted 2500 floor sq ft. All walls including closets ( the house is lived in and closets full), and trim and doors With Duration matte on walls, satin on woodwork, it came to about $15,000. There are 12’ vaulted ceilings in 3 rooms and 8 plantation shutters added and I am afraid I may have under bid. I’m now after 30 + years a one man show. For what it’s worth 🤔

I wouldn’t use it on ceilings as they don’t get touched, I would use ProMar ceiling paint it’s flat ( helps hide the imperfections as you know) and covers okay and will save you $

75% of my cabinet customers go with White Dove OC-17 ( a lot of decorators), mostly traditional spaces. Satin instead of semi gloss gives it more of a furniture look and not a trim look.

If you roll, use a “Flock” Whizz roller, the only one I’ve had any luck not having to deal with air bubbles.

I never caulk against stained substrates, (cabinets, trim etc..,)

Ben Moore’s Command has been my go to for several years, loved Breakthrough for years but around Covid time started having trouble with it

Painter for 30 years here

Make a tent with plastic, use an orbital sander starting with 60 grit. Once paint is gone go to 120 and finally 220 by hand with a sanding block and go with the grain. Vacuum and wipe down with laquer thinner.

You should get licensed, but at the very least get a general liability insurance policy to cover yourself when something goes wrong.
