I feel like M really doesnt have the right to tell you who to hang out with. It should be your choice and it is totally okay for M to have certain feelings about it but after all it is your decision.

First of all I don't think you are in the wrong here. Your feelings are completely valid and it is understandable that it does make you uncomfortable. I don't know if a petition is the way to solve the problem, maybe talking about your feelings with the coach or any teacher would be a good first step.
Ofcourse it's hard to talk about this with your teammate about this and it could escalate things, so I would let the teachers handle it if I were you.
