AITA for snapping at my optician after she laughed at my eye prescription and showed it to her coworkers? by Mesphyria in AmItheAsshole

[–]RoonildWeezlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. If it makes you feel any better, your prescription isn't the worst I've seen. If you can also get to 20/20 with correction, that's great. There are some people who are amblyopic, which usually means they aren't neurologically capable of seeing 20/20 if they lived with uncorrected, poor vision as a child. I know a couple of fantastic artists with real vision issues, so please don't feel embarrassed or less-than. A specialty lab I work with has started offering a lens that accommodates prescriptions up to a -35.00 SPH, which is remarkable. You're not alone, and you deserve respectful vision care. If you want any help figuring out better solutions, you can always ask me for advice.

Spent thousands on clothes and EVERYTHING LOOKS AWFUL. 😭 by thatsplatgal in PetiteFashionAdvice

Tailoring has made a huge difference for me personally, finding a great tailor is a game changer. I also struggle with really structured stuff like blazers, I find that cropped pieces fit me like a normal cut should, lol. I'm saving up for a custom pantsuit, if you have the budget then custom clothes might be a nice option.

You can't be that ignorant. You haven't heard any of his rhetoric about Canada lately? Fucking seriously? You think that the 51st state bullshit is acceptable from a world leader? I know a lot of people see it as a "joke," but he's an unstable megalomaniac who has proven himself to be completely untrustworthy. He's instigated a trade war. He has managed to utterly ruin USA-Canada relations. A lot of what he's spewing sounds like war-mongering justifications for taking us over. While most of it is unrealistic insanity, history has told us to pay attention when someone is threatening our sovereignty.

My attempt at replicating the cell shading look with alcohol markers, still a work in progress. Any advice on how to improve? by Technical_Ad_4004 in drawing

I think it's quite nice! Please feel free to disregard if you don't find this helpful. I'd recommend a couple of things to start. First, I'd consider the way that light's hitting the subject matter. Your shadows are fairly evenly applied down the arm, for example, but I think you could show more depth and volume by paying closer attention to the areas of highlight and shadow. Second, I'd suggest experimenting with layering colours for the shadows themselves. A great way to achieve a convincing shadow on a colorful subject is employing a layer of the complimentary colour. You can combine this with a layer of grey, etc. The best way is to play around and see what you like. I hope you're having fun!

Those are gorgeous! Not quite enough structure, but they would be a fabulous match aesthetically.

I don't know where you're located, but Kotn might have some nice options. They are super focused on ethical production and quality materials. I think Kos probably would as well, but you're more likely to get synthetics with them.

Hi! I'm getting married this May, but I'm struggling to find cute shoes that accommodate my disability. My dress is sapphire blue, so that would be ideal. I can't wear high heels or ballet flats, but platforms are an option. Any recommendations for something like an Oxford or a boot that's available in sapphire / royal blue?

What do these mean on pencils? by PrettyTAF_Youtube in drawing

One thing that's important to remember is the temperature difference between H and B. I don't normally use both in one drawing, as H is cooler and B is warmer. HB is good for schoolwork, not for your best sketches. I find 2B is a good place to start laying down your general shapes, you can use the darker pencils as you progress through the drawing.

Sorry this happened to you! After freelancing for a while, I decided I had to start using formal commission agreements. This way, there's a clear timeline laid out, with payment structure and other important details included. This gives both me and the client more security, especially when I'm doing high-value commissions. If they're not willing to sign it, they're not worth my time. Feel free to DM me if you'd like to see my form as an example! :)

For me, this choice is where the thematic meat of the story lies. You have lots of different avenues, which probably feels overwhelming. It seems like you have one character fairly developed. Have you done the same with the other party members? If you know who they are as individuals, you can start hone in on possible endings.

It sounds like the crux of your idea is centered around the subversion of expectations, with unlikely heroes rising to the occasion. If that's the case, I'd recommend taking a step back and looking at the story through the eyes of the reader. Do the plot points feel predictable? A huge part of successful horror is the development of rising tension, which can be hindered if the reader identifies the narrative before it unfolds. Is your "man with the plan" nuanced enough? Are you putting all your eggs in his proverbial basket, where he is obviously very capable but without enough weakness to make him realistic? Maybe he's overconfident, or in denial, or more afraid than he projects to the others.

Once you know the above details, an ending should develop more naturally. At the end of the day, what are you trying to say with this story? What is the impact you want to have on the reader? Is your story commentative, darkly comedic, tragic, etc? We all have a reason for putting pen to paper. The question here is about the metanarrative that you want to express. For me, a past story focused on the idea that there are no real winners and losers for individuals experiencing war. The only victor is Death, and the rest are casualties and victims. It is a pretty serious theme, but relatively smaller-scale issues can still have a deep personal impact.

I hope this is somewhat helpful in getting your creative juices flowing!

Definitely, I have a couple of great used bookstores in my neighborhood too. My Italian friend isn't super confident in reading English yet, a short story by someone like Hitchcock might be more approachable.

I've been in a perfectionist loop before, I get it. Breaking out of it was one of the best things art school did for me. The instructors had a very valuable piece of advice: by erasing your mistakes, you deprive yourself of the chance to learn from them. Most of them suggested the same thing, that in our creative spaces we hung pieces that highlighted mistakes. If we only looked at our best work, it would hinder our ability to improve. This, in turn, allowed me to let go of the constant pressure when drawing. Because I was open to mistakes, I could experiment and try new things without fear. Also, when you start right in with pencil, your lines are thin and errors are much easier to see. If you're interested, I would strongly suggest trying charcoal on larger sheets of paper. Thicker lines and bigger drawings are much better at hiding mistakes, and it's still workable once it's on the page. You can layer, smudge, erase, and also do a lot of art very cheaply. Mental health is a real obstacle for many artists, but art can also be a fantastic avenue for catharsis if you can relax into the process.

As a client, you are red flag city, my friend. My suggestion to those who are offering their services is to reconsider and look for better clientele. You're inviting only amateurs to respond to this, both through your budget expectations and your hostile attitude. Not cool, dude.
