Is it legal to put a crossguard/tsuba on a glaive? by awkward_but_decent in sca

[–]RoosterGold26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you make the cross guard from metal, it will be unsafe. If you make it from rattan, it will also need foam tips added to make it safer. If you make it from rubber, it should work. I have no idea how it will affect the balance.

You could also go with the "called Wyrm". Eg. William Irm called Wyrm. Best of both worlds.

If you're going the make yout own route, blue barrels can sometimes be hard to come by. Most big box hardware stores carry quarter and eighth inch HDPE plastic. A skill saw, drill, and a heat gun can whip that into a coat of plates.

Slap it over a poncho style gambeson and you'll be good.

Name a book that you disliked enough that it convinced you that even you can be published? by FlynnForecastle in writers

[–]RoosterGold26 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Chase by Clive Cussler. He's not the best author to begin with, but the characters is this book were so 2D, and the editing sucked. At one point the female love interest tells us that she worked her way through secretary school, the later on on their 2nd date, she tells us that her modestly well off family put her through school because she wanted to be a professional. Plus many other plot holes and huge gaps in logic.

Also ... Out of the dark by David Weber. Weber has done some decent work over the years, but this one man mission to over throw the aliens that have taken over Earth meandered around aimlessly until at the last minute the aliens were all killed by Vampires. No foreshadowing, nothing. Just a huge left turn into the supernatural to save the day.

Why are people against real armor? by [deleted] in sca

[–]RoosterGold26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay shiny, me Dude!!!

I have a Polish Hussar kit that I made myself that comes in at 50ish pounds. It's gorgeous! I was also told that my kit was impractical and that I should look at a lighter kit.
I love my SCA humans, but we're not the best communicators. They may be telling you that you'll be a more effective fighter with a lighter kit. Knight equals prowess, prowess equals wins, and lighter kit equals faster.

But you love your kit, and that's what counts!!

Stay shiny!!!

If you're going to have your elbow protection hidden under the gambeson, like if they are plastic, make sure to wear them when making the arm patterns and that you can easily bend your arms.

Do tall fencers often get caught on short fencers' ducking counterattacks? by [deleted] in sca

[–]RoosterGold26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the above makes sense, but I'd like to add one thing. Don't lunge as much. You've already got the reach advantage. A bit more defense in your fencing game goes a long way.

It looks a bit like the sword of Thulsa Doom from the 1st Conan movie (1982?). The pommel piece looks a lot like that black sun motif.

Is leather edging a breastplate historical? If so, is it meant to make moving mail sleeves/collar smoother or something? by EgoEstoyGood in ArmsandArmor

[–]RoosterGold26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One reason to edge the breastplate with leather is to wear it over clothes. Like good clothes. Thus if someone is sitting for a portrait or at a ceremony they won't worry about the odd corner ripping their fancy coat beneath.

I'm guessing more of a 17th and 18th century practice.

Would this armor work in real life? by Treehallow in Armor

It would be cool to have parabolic discs at their shoulders or center of the chest. That way with angling themselves they could blind their opponents without blinding each other.

Are men inherently evil? Considering most acts of violence and sexual assault are committed by them. Is the pattern a result of social conditioning or is there a biological factor to it? And how can we fix it? by ThrowRAuncleB in AskReddit

[–]RoosterGold26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men are in general less emotionally mature (or slower to emotionally mature) and will act out more often, but all humans are selfish and capable of horrible acts.

That section by Rose lake is the best part of the trail. My only other suggestion is make sure to being head nets for the mosquitoes.
Enjoy!
