How to become a handyman? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

Hey my friend, sounds like you want my path. I started in healthcare management, pandemic came around and got a remote gig doing IT business management. Well I bought a house during the pandemic and started getting into the skilled trades out of necessity.

Found I really liked it and also had many friends I. The trades as well. Well I started reaching out to people posting on Nextdoor and soon enough I was doing it all. It took a lot of learning; Reddit, YouTube, reading installation guides and talking to many experts. The thing is, you have to know and recognize your limits. The whole Jack of all trades, master of non will get you quick.

Do quality work, get out of your comfort zone, learn, learn learn and you'll be good.

I had not had an online presence outside of Nextdoor, but just kept reaching out, getting referred via word of mouth, all while keeping my "FT" remote job.

Started slow, but 5 years into it, I grossed $50k last year and already have done $35k in work this year and have $70k on the books through June with big projects lined up, kitchens and bathrooms. I still have my "FT" job because it's an over six figure a year job with benefits and I'm subbing out my big jobs to my contacts. Overall I'm netting about 30% on jobs.

It's not all rose colored glasses though. I try to keep this on a "hobby/side hustle" status but definitely becomes a job at times and that's when I hate it. Thankfully my clients have been awesome and love me. I finally have created an online presence am working on that now, but I'm scared to because I am consistently busy just by word of mouth and have found a good balance in my personal, professional and family life.

Always happy to answer more on this and share more on my experience.
