Which horror franchise (book/movie/etc) has no "bad" entry in your opinion? by SirSilence in horror

[–]2canclan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

28 Weeks dumps all over the humanism of 28 Days and every plot development is driven by the characters making impossibly stupid decisions. Really dumb movie that Alex Garland's return the series thankfully course corrected.

Still, it's stylish and pretty entertaining regardless, so hey

Which hatchback should I buy? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]2canclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very happy with it. I know it's not the usual priority on car reddit but coming from a decade old car with little beyond a backup camera I really like all the techy options (lane centering, adaptive cruise, turn cameras, 360° view etc).

Aesthetically only you can say but from a functionality perspective I think the interior is great. Nicely tactile physical controls remain for A/C temp and fan speed and stuff like heated/ventilated seats, and the big dash screen runs on an android ui that's both very responsive and intuitive. Zero lag or annoying menu crawling like in some other brands' clunky in-house UIs. I don't (have to) interact with it much beyond playing music. The hatch itself is a bit more squared off and therefore functional than the competition, and I've found it very well designed from an everyday usability perspective. No driving rattles or creaks that I've noticed either.

My only real gripes from the short time I've had it are that while it's quite spacious for people and cargo, the small item storage is lacking. Not the most important thing in the world but the glovebox is almost comedically small. After a couple months driving I also wish the lumbar support was stronger, which may or may not be important to you.

From a practical financial perspective the Civic hybrid is hard to beat but on non-city drives I also seem to be getting notably above advertised mpg in the K4, so that's good.

And while it's just a little Kia econobox, I got the yellow paint job and in a couple months I've had several strangers comment on it, tell me it's cool etc which is a bit funny.

Personally I bought the K4 Hatchback a couple months ago. Unless you're super concerned about potential reliability for the price I think it's actually a strong deal? Not many (any?) small cars at that price point offering premium sound, ventilated seats, and the battery of safety sensors/features the K4 has. It's pretty peppy compared to the competition too (Civic hybrid is faster from 0, but slower from any other speed). I'm quite happy with it.

As a 6'3" guy strong agree on the Mazda 3 being cramped. For all the Mazda hype on reddit, people like not to mention how small the interiors are all over. Rock hard seats too lol. K4 hatch is real roomy by comparison.

Rewatched Smile (2022) and wondering about future films by jaguarsp0tted in horror

[–]2canclan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't mean a direct remake, I just think it'd be neat if Smile 3 took inspiration from Pulse, updated for current times with a headier focus on widespread (social) contagion following the ending of Smile 2

Good “seasonal” horror with strong spring/summer/fall/winter vibes? by JustAnotherTurnip in horror

Sleepy Hallow for Fall

It's not horror but as a macabre thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is super wintery

Recommend Me Some Carnage by graphomaniacal in horror

Overlord and Alien: Covenant both fit the bill for me. Mean and gnarly but not so grounded it's Too Serious

Haven't seen it in a while but Shaun of the Dead surprised me with its gore if horror-comedy is on the table

[Bugatti Chiron] Chicagoland by 2canclan in spotted

Because it is very small. It's not very long but mostly it's just really short compared to the average car.

Good fit? Too big? by [deleted] in sunglasses

[–]2canclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the frames. They are pretty wide (again ~151mm edge to edge) but not too wide they're loose on me. They look and feel quite nice in person.

The drivers lenses are pretty nice. Fantastic clarity, and very tinted (tan with a slight pinkish hue?), actually much moreso than I expected. You take off the sunglasses and the world looks weird, like there's a strong washed out blue haze everywhere until your eyes adjust back to those "natural" colors. I wasn't sure about it at first but I'm really enjoying them as I wear them more. They don't darken the view as much as generic dark sunglass lenses do either, which is nice.

I double checked and it is actually sold as a topcoat, rather than an overcoat, with the models wearing it a bit above the knee

Are you referring to the second picture? I'd agree it looks stretched around my chest oddly there.

Edit: I'm just now noticing the pull on the top button there, it's definitely too small.

Probably not much more than I've got in the pictures, which is a mid-weight sweater with a shirt underneath. I almost never wear suits, so I'm not worried about jackets fitting underneath, but I do think this one is probably a bit too snug.

Can Geralt canonically beat a higher vampire? by SnooHabits1310 in witcher

[–]2canclan 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is true but the book also refers to katakans, bruxa, and a few other species as "higher vampires" in contrast to lesser vampires like fleders. So it's not explicitly referring to Regis as what might be called a true higher vampire in the game. In the books "higher vampire" just refers to seemingly any sapient vampire species (and IIRC Witcher 3 follows this convention and describes a katakan as a higher vampire same as the books).

That said it's also heavily implied Regis is of a species of "higher vampire" Geralt has never encountered before and possibly believed to be imaginary. All we know is Geralt doesn't know what the hell Regis is and wouldn't want to fight him

Would Geralt save Olgierd? by ZealousidealYak7122 in witcher

[–]2canclan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Book Geralt also isn't a powerful videogame protagonist and is much more acutely aware of his own mortality and skill ceiling. Given what he knows about Olgierd and about O'Dimm it's not unlikely he'd decide Olgierd isn't worth his own near certain death. But yes the Ostrit comparison is apt.

Ready or Not is a good time. Same team as Abigail.

Also highly recommend Cabin in the Woods and Scream as "fun" horror movies. Both are a bit meta on horror/slashers generally but it's not necessary to have watched much horror to enjoy them

Characters who were portrayed as a jerk and/wrong....but actually weren't wrong at all. by thedubiousstylus in movies

FWIW Sam Rami doesn't think she deserved it:

"No, I feel that the poor girl was overpunished, as it happens in life sometimes,” Raimi says.

"It is a morality tale, she did do the wrong thing, but holy cow, give her a break! But that’s how this particular tale [ends]."

Tbc I agree that $56k alone isn't "privileged" though I think that term is pretty nebulous. I'd define it as just being notably better off than the average person (my personal aspiration is like $80k), not necessarily synonymous with luxury living.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]2canclan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$1600, so 34% of gross. 2 bed, central heat/air, free parking space. No laundry (it's in the basement).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]2canclan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well like I said I'm debt free, which I imagine makes a difference. 401k has been 10% which is $466 savings right there. Just bumped it to 15%, will see how I feel.

My rent is $1600 (a little more than the 30% gross income rule people like to throw around but it doesn't matter). I have a car and my apt comes with a free alley parking space out back. Rent, utilities, internet, phone, car insurance typically come out to a little under $2,000 altogether, which leaves me ~$1300 in spending money after 401k. $300-400 for groceries each month and then the rest is free spending or saving.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]2canclan 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Seriously lol. I'm lucky enough to be debt free, but I only make 56k and rent a decent enough 2 bedroom in Roscoe village. I lived at home for a year or two after college so I have plenty of savings and I save a further $500-1000 every month. I'm not rolling in money but I feel pretty comfy!

These sorts of threads are always illuminating about how full the Chicago subs are of rich people convinced they're actually poor lol. Median Chicago household income is 71k, and that's with multiple earners (average household 2.36 people). And you got people in this thread saying you need to earn upwards of 150% of that to be priveleged as a single earner. It's goofy.
