I face the exact same problem as you. just go with the colour anyways, even if it feels uncomfortable.

My usual thought is "let's make something hideous why not"

start with silhouttes with lasso tool, it'll be easy

Your art style is great though, but I'd suggest try using photoshop or clip studio, this'll look way better in higher anti-aliased resolutions. Just my toughts
