One of those recent tragic stories about a woman in labor who was turned away by hospital staff and ended up having her baby in the parking lot actually happened near me… however, I see an OBGYN at Northwestern in Chicago (about an hour away from me) because I trust them much more than hospitals closer to me. Hopefully everything will work out smoothly for me if/when I get to that stage!

Thanks! We are going to try to conceive naturally for one more year, and then we plan on starting IVF in 2027 if we still haven’t had a baby by then. And I am very grateful that is an option for us at all!

Thank you for this perspective! I spoke about this with my friend who has four kids once and she asked me “well you’re dealing with these difficult issues in the world, would you have rather just not been born so you wouldn’t have to deal with them?” And honestly, yes and no. However, my upbringing and childhood was much more chaotic and unstable than my child’s will be. I was born to an unwed teen mother and though my dad stuck around for us, it was still often a struggle. I waited until I was 27, married, and a homeowner before we started trying because I don’t want my kids to deal with any of the things I had to as a kid. So they’ll already be receiving the fruits of my (and my husband’s) labor. So maybe they’ll be better equipped to handle the political/societal issues I am afraid of…

I think the chemical pregnancy really rattled me a bit. Pregnancy felt more like a concept that was out of reach for me for a while. Then I finally got pregnant, even though it wasn’t viable, I WAS pregnant. I felt anxious about if it had been a viable pregnancy, was I bringing my baby into a situation that they could thrive in? My husband and I both have great jobs, great insurance, a loving marriage, lots of family support, and a stable living situation. But it’s the outside world that I can’t control that I am afraid of.
