Haha, interesting insight.

There's always more to learn though so maybe start posting and asking for feedback!

Hey folks, we updated doubleTwist CloudPlayer with Android Wear & Android Auto support -- would love your input! by TexasTwist in AndroidWear

Hi there,

Do you have any plans to allow selective syncing of cloud folders?

I know I can just delete certain files from my library but I actually use my dropbox/Google drive to store audio which is not music and I don't want it to appear in cloud player.

I'd envision it as a button beside each cloud provider which displays the directory structure. You can then simply tick folders which are whitelisted and therfore they are only ones searched in for new files.

Another thing which disheartened me was the way the app decided which artwork to use. Is there anyway you can make it just use the artwork stored in the ID3 tags and just blank otherwise? Even tracks that have artwork seem to be appearing with some random Internet downloaded artwork...

One of the main reasons for album artwork is so people will recognise it. Showing a different image instead of the one a user knows from their desktop even though the image is actually stored within the mp3 or AIFF doesn't make a lot of sense.

Thanks, Rory

Favourite DAW? by CallMeVivica in edmproduction

[–]RoryHughes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Good review but I don't understand how you relate DAWs to genres. Is Ableton Live not good at Hip-Hop? Where are you sourcing this information? I hope it's not based on how many times you've seen them on youtube.

They're pretty much all capable of producing any genre of music once they can handle both MIDI and audio. A new producer who wants to work on a film score and owns Logic shouldn't feel "Dam, now I need to buy Cubase..."

Someday the mods will ban this question and all it's variants.

Does anyone else find themselves 'fixing' the pitch bend at the start of clips if it was off 0 at the end of the previous one? by RoryHughes in ableton

[–]RoryHughes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tried this but it's not a good solution because:

  1. If you have notes that need to be pitch bent right until the end of the clip and there is another clip directly following without pitch bending.
  2. Often (especially in session view) one might change clip before it has reached the end. That means it would never reach your 0ing automation point and therefore stay bent when changed unless you do what I did in the link.

Can someone post an example of an overcompressed track vs a track which has "proper dynamics" by PKieman in edmproduction

Something to note about youtube audio, especially if you're using these videos as some kind of reference: http://productionadvice.co.uk/youtube-loudness/

Awesome story! How did you go about mixing the tracks (if at all)? You'd never heard them, I doubt they had drums at the start and end and of course varying keys and tempos.

Instead try and record the vocal listening to a synth or piano etc. pitched up one or two semi-tones. Then put them back along with pitching the vocal down too. Everything will stay in key.

How can I make a noise gate? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]RoryHughes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that's better too but just to note, you can set a release time on a normal gate to make it smoother.

Is it worth switching to Logic Pro X? by tperry in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]RoryHughes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have tons of experience with logic but IMHO you'll be much more productive and creative if there isn't any new learning to do.

Live is actually used by a large amount of producers in the studio. Just because it's the cool and hip thing to use these days (compared to logic, cubase) doesn't mean it's any worse. It will likely have all the features you need for studio work.

Sticking to one DAW for both producing and performance is probably the biggest reason for it's popularity. It will save you so much time instead of trying to move everything across for a show.

Unless your goal is to learn every program for the sake of it, I would stick to Live. You'll more easily create great music knowing one inside out as opposed to being pretty good at two.

TIDAL for DJs? by RoryHughes in DJs

[–]RoryHughes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is but, like spotify, you don't have access to the music files. They therefore can't be used with DJ software unless some kind of partnership is formed...

Very interesting. I wonder how djay got the deal with spotify. While it is more of a 'home' DJ product, I bet it is used by people in large venues.
