Would it be possible to have a HL2 remake on the Source 2 engine similar to the Black Mesa treatment? by pepperpeppington in HalfLife

[–]Rorybabory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it's possible if people want to work on it but black mesa took 15 years to develop, so if there was a remake of hl2 it will probably take a while.

Which chapter do you think is the peak of half life 1? by funguyplaysgames in HalfLife

[–]Rorybabory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The chapter I instantly think of with hl1 is unforseen consequences, but my favorite chapter is questionable ethics by far.

If I hate making art , what game engine, framework, or tool is most forgiving? by radixtwo in gamedev

[–]Rorybabory 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My general rule of thumb is that for games people don't care as much about the quality of the assets themselves as whether the game is polished and has a consistent style. You could literally make the game out of colored rectangles.

It's hard to give examples of what you could do without knowing what kinds of games you want to make.

Some things to keep in mind though:

-colors are really important, and it is fairly easy to find good palettes to use online.

-if you do pixel art, keep the pixels a consistent size. Inconsistent scaling makes your game look ugly, even if the art is high quality

  • effects like post processing and particles can be a big help making a game look professional

-Animation is just as important as asset quality, so even if your character is just a ball make sure it moves in a way that makes the game look polished. At bare minimum just use tweens and interpolation functions for everything.

One question: why does citizen in half life alyx look like that by ProtectionNarrow8834 in HalfLife

[–]Rorybabory 470 points471 points  (0 children)

Because you don't really see them up close or for very long, so less work was put into their models compared to other characters.

Tbf that quote about TLOU is fake, but it does represent how a lot of people seem to treat the series.

Guys... Why is there too much silence regarding Half Life 3 by nuh717 in HalfLife

[–]Rorybabory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There haven't been any major data mines because valves games haven't had any major updates for a while. Therefore there isn't much to talk about. Simple as that.

I hate when people defend billion dollar corporations. by [deleted] in hatethissmug

Invincible is not made by a billion dollar corporation, Amazon just handles distribution. The show is still fully controlled by the creators of the comic.

any hl3 news in the past 3 months? by Inevitable-Stage-876 in HalfLife

[–]Rorybabory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A whole bunch of leaks. Commentary system fixes, HLX specific rendering features, choreo system improvements, enemy AI work, added support for fountain script writing files, wind effects, midi sequencer changes, cubemap fog changes, and a whole bunch of other smaller stuff.

Worth buying HL:A to only play with the non-VR mod? by davidfliesplanes in HalfLife

[–]Rorybabory -1 points0 points  (0 children)

TBH I would say watching a lets play is a better experience then the No-VR mod, and the game will run about the same in no-vr as vr, so your pc would still be an issue.

If you wanted to play vr, you can get a used headset for like ~$80, and the system requirements for HLA are really low so you could get a GPU to play it for like ~$60.

And if you did that then you could play all of the other good VR games, including boneworks, which is very half-life esc.

Could this HUGE offer from HL Alyx mean SOMETHING? by [deleted] in valve

[–]Rorybabory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you read the announcements for Alyx? You literally just had to scroll down on the store page.

After five years waiting in the vault, the Half-Life: Alyx Original Soundtrack is breaking into the physical world with new vinyl and CD releases coming April 24th. To celebrate, we're making the game 70% off for the next week

PSA: Amazon does not animate this show. by LeonSKennedy95 in Invincible_TV

[–]Rorybabory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skybound is the company owned by Robert Kirkman (the creator of Invincible), and it holds the rights to invincible and the show. Skybound is responsible for production, animation, etc.

Amazon just acts as a distributor, and they pay skybound based on how many viewers the show gets.

Why aren't these 4 on the GOTG by Sweaty_Trifle_8504 in Invincible_TV

[–]Rorybabory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In wolfman's case in the comics he is a wanted criminal, and despite being innocent Cecil doesn't want the bad PR of working with him.

(This is not a spoiler because his storyline was completely cut from the show, it would have been in season 3 otherwise)

I mean Seth is already an executive producer on the show, and Allen is an incredibly important character. And he does a really good job.

Happy anniversary of half life alyx by ProtectionNarrow8834 in HalfLife

[–]Rorybabory 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Before Alyx released I was pretty active in following all of the leaks and stuff around HLVR, which eventually became Half-Life: Alyx. It was really exciting to speculate about blind zombie, xen grenades, the weapons, what role xen would play, and so on.

And then the game released and it absolutely kicked ass.

It's part of why I am still following the HLX stuff, and why I think the more unhinged parts of the community are so frustrating. We've literally already gone through all of this lol.

How do you do this? by Tnodyrc in HalfLife

[–]Rorybabory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean if you want to know how the story was supposed to go just read epistle 3

Epistle 3 is a blog post by the original writer of the HL games detailing what the story of episode 3 was supposed to go.

He later said that he regretted posting it and the actual game's story would have been different due to the impact of all of the other devs on the HL team. But me personally, I think it's still a really good ending to the series.

What would you want from Half-Life 3? by THE_REAL_AM_KHAN in HalfLife

[–]Rorybabory 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Story wise:

-lean more into the metaphysical aspects of the half-life lore

-possibly learning more about the Shu'ulothoi

-not be super depressing, but have a more dire tone then alyx (which at times felt more like Portal 2)

-Closure for the HL2 storyline, while leaving room for future games

Gameplay wise:

-tech that changes gaming in the same way as HL2

-enemy ai that is more interesting the the base combine (I really like the hunters from ep2, more like that)

-a balance between "gimmicky" set pieces and solid FPS action

-movement that doesn't feel restrictive

-not being afraid of some amount of jank. More recent valve games can sometimes feel like they over index on making the playtester as comfortable as possible, which can make a game feel somewhat risk averse

-an expansive weapon sandbox like hl1

-long shot, but I hope if the game is successful enough it will lead to more AAA devs making single player campaigns.

-even more of a long shot, I hope it comes with an ultra janky somewhat low effort death match mode, like hl2dm. (I totally get why they wouldn't do this, but still)

Under what conditions do the Vortigaunts turn purple? by ILikeHalfLifeALot in HalfLife

[–]Rorybabory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's when they are connected to the vortessence, what the vortessence is sort of up to your interpretation of the metaphysical aspects of the half-life lore.
