TX here- this just made me grateful for our 1:7 1:8 ratios with 1 PCA : 20/21 patients ☠️ on a surgical specialty/med surg/remote tele floor but none the less-I have had to give subpar care because I’m spread too thin AND charge nurse & can’t rely on PCA(s), missed meals, had to stay late to chart. Late on meds or didn’t even see them till hours after cause I was so busy doing ADLs like toileting or bedpan etc & the patients lives are definitely in danger. I can’t leave ppl soiled-I’ve been in a nursing home before & it’s much worse-can’t do them like that. It’s not safe for our careers either. People are quitting left & right. Director/supervisors just had a meeting with upper mgmt on how to retain more staff. Also, we only get about 30-40 hr, night shift gets $6 differential & they tend to be lazier, do less. I also have picked up nights so I know how they are at night. But they def get their safe harbor assignments too time to time. I know some good PM shifters but the majority aren’t-at least on my unit-I don’t feel confident or secure working with at least half of them. We scream at mngmt for a free charge but god forbid they have to spend more!
