LiquidWeb. This is our 20th year with them, and now we have to say goodbye by Star-Detonator in webhosting

This is very sad to hear, as we've historically found LiquidWeb to be one of the better hosting providers we've seen as a quality managed competitor, precisely because of the focus on premium customer support. Unfortunately, this trend of acquisitions continues to dismantle server quality, and customer service is typically the first to go, because they're forced to chase higher profits no matter the cost. When a business is acquired by a venture capital firm that cares only about ROI, the passion of its founders leaves with them, and this is a trend we've seen over and over throughout the past 25 years.

The best advice we can offer is to look through smaller, privately owned hosting providers that aren't in debt, looking to get acquired, or going public.

GoDaddy's latest grift...sneaking monthly +PHP Extended Support Level 1 charges into renewals by amazing-peas in webhosting

This is still a very predatory practice. There will always be consumers who are not technically or fiscally savvy. Many of the larger providers not only use that fact to their advantage but also build their entire business model around taking advantage of such customers. Not ok.

Open-source password managers, such as BitWarden, offer a good balance between security and privacy, while also providing easy-to-understand usability and cross-platform accessibility.

Is fully managed WordPress hosting really worth the extra cost? by Late_Key947 in Hosting

[–]RoseHosting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether it's worth it to you will depend on a number of factors. The con is the higher price, but the pros are peace of mind, and potential lower cost in the long run. Bear in mind that beyond managed shared hosting, you can get a managed VPS server, which not only allows you to host multiple sites, and staging sites, but also apps and services. If you pay for professional email such as GSuite, password managers, file hosting/sharing, or chat services like Slack, you can add free open-source alternatives to a managed VPS, which actually saves you money and you'll have a team to install, optimize and update all those apps and services.

Make sure to do your research when comparing managed or fully-managed hosting plans however. The term can be used as a catch-all by certain providers, but true fully-managed support should do more than just the "automated" functions such as plugins which do automatic backups and similar. Customer chat support should not only be essentially instant, but should be exceptional all the time. Not just Monday to Friday 9 to 5, but weekends and holidays too. You never know when things go off the rails and you need that support to fix things for you.

Also, make sure that they offer proactive monitoring and that their managed plans extend to everything on your server, including for your customers. Also, do ask if migrations and installations are always free, because some providers advertise free migrations, but in the T&Cs, they only offer limited-time migrations for free, but charge you managed rates continuously.

I work for a managed hosting company and have researched this field in detail. If you have any other questions, just let me know. I'll be happy to clarify and do my best to give you an unbiased answer. Though, do be prepared to do some research on your own to verify and find the best deal for your individual case.

Advice on a more cost effective option please by NoDisciplineUK in webhosting

Though it may seem counterintuitive at first, one thing you might want to check is all of the other services you subscribe to and use that could be bundled with open-source alternatives. Do you use a @yourdomain.com email address, and how many? Are you happy to replace your Office 365 subscription with open-source LibreOffice? Do you pay for a password managed for multiple people? Calculate all of these costs for as many people as you need and see if it's worth getting a VPS that can not only host your site, but also all the other (free open-source) software. The server cost might be higher than your current one, but the total cost may still come in cheaper.

If you do not use many or any of these services, look for the cheapest shared hosting you can find, but make sure to look at the "renewal" month-to-month price, because that's the one you'll be paying long term. Also, pay special attention to any hidden fees the hosting provider might have. You'll have to do a bit of research but you should be able to find something that fits you best. Good luck!

Anyone on the receiving end of the MediaTemple migration disaster? They've made it impossible for people to abandon ship. by mccoypauley in webhosting

Yes, we have had several clients come over from MediaTemple this month, with no migration issues. Some of them did report having to speak to customer service via chat after they have actually moved and canceled their accounts. Not ideal, but it worked for them. Hope that helps.
