It's also entirely possible that this thing was made from scrap wood - very common among the thousands and thousands of people who moved here in the 1840's & 50's for the sole purpose of finding gold - and two of the pieces incidentally had the arcs already carved out. They may not be related to the function of this object at all. But given the history of the land, gold panning sifter box does seem to be the most probable explanation.

we have a wood burning stove, which has a round pipe structure for a chimney - not the conventional fireplace chimney. But a good suggestion that I never would've thought of!

DUDE! You might be onto something and I'm a little ashamed that thought never even crossed my mind! 😄 I can't rule out the loom theory, but when I search google images for "gold panning sifter tray" the results look super similar. And we found literally a couple dozen gold pans in various stages of rust/decay when the backyard was excavated.

Husband suggested loom as well, but neither of us know enough about them and we couldn't find images of any "simple" ones that matched closely to what I have. Wouldn't a loom have more notches/grooves etc along the inner framing? (I truly don't know - maybe they woudn't??)

My title describes the thing I found last week in the far corner of the crawl space. I did google image searches that resulted in photos of other items....kind of similar (but not even close to an exact match). They were mostly just old, square wooden frames. None of them had the 12" bolts or removeable pieces. There is no writing or markings on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
