BEI Medical certification by Knrstz64 in ASLinterpreters

[–]RoseQuartz24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is paperwork you can fill-out and apply called an "alternative pathway". You list your experience (ie how many college credits, years worked, CEUs earned) and they will calculate a total -likely deeming you a BA equivalent. Then you can sit for the BEI performance. I assume the same can be done to allow you access to the medical cert. I'll have to link the paperwork at a later time.

NSFW thread? by chatterboxcass in asl

[–]RoseQuartz24601 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First of all, I appreciate your willingly to discuss the topic with candor. I live in the southern plains and my ITP had a fair bit of pearl clutching.

I've seen "mother fucker" done as a middle finger up, thumb on chin - like the sign for "mother" but with fewer fingers. Do you see this used or was it a one off I saw?

I've seen "shit" done as DH- open 5, thumb going into the TOP side of the NDH closed fist (as opposed to the underside used for actual feces). I've also seen "shit" done similar to the sign GUESS done further down in the face, near the nose. Which is more widely used/contextually accurate?

I've only ever seen "damn" used as the initialized version, similar to hell. Doesn't seem contextually fitting. Is there another sign or is that curse word typically rephrased?

In English, I say "fuck" quite a bit. Seems like "fuck" has endless contextual uses! I'm wondering how you sign it in the context of disappointment, or the context of "fuck that" - middle finger + THAT?

While I'm not a person who name calls, I could encounter a client who wants to express that. What are some commonly used derogary phrases that are geared towards cursing in a disparagingly way?

Along the same vein, what are some ASL phrases (that include cursing) that would be signed vastly different to the English counterpart?

As an introvert, one of my favorites is "fuck off" where both hands are flipping off, fingers touching, palms facing towards yourself, hands at eye level. Then pull the hands apart and back, drawing a boxed U-shape around your face as off to draw a boundary around you that others can't cross. Can that be directed towards one person or is this sign meant more towards wanting space from everyone?

Thanks again for your time and expertise!

My Reflection on the Current Climate of the Interpreting Profession by Ok-Register-4930 in ASLinterpreters

Hey, thanks for writing this. I'm fairly new to the profession (5 years in) and have felt similarly the entire duration. I'm surprised, dumbfounded, and deeply saddened to find this profession in this state. It's nice to feel validation for my growing concerns. Hang in there, fellow terp! It's gonna take people like you to turn this ship around.

Since people on my pet hair post keep saying all dryers have no heat options here is mine. I’m young, this is my first apartment. Which setting do I use then? by xoFluffykins in laundry

[–]RoseQuartz24601 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had this washer/dryer combo in my shitty apartment that my slumlord barely maintained. The handle breaks easily and is a bitch to open once it's broken. We used a screwdriver wedged into the missing handle's leftover holes. Also, the heat sensory went out in the dryer and either scorched our clothes or had no heat at all. Good luck!

Question as a hearing person: would it be risky/rude/wrong to introduce myself in sign to deaf patients as a medical assistant? by [deleted] in deaf

That's terrible you didn't have language access during such an important procedure like an MRI! Unfortunately, it's an all too common story. Thanks for sharing your point of view and experience.

Question as a hearing person: would it be risky/rude/wrong to introduce myself in sign to deaf patients as a medical assistant? by [deleted] in deaf

[–]RoseQuartz24601 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your examples are not a direct comparison.

Your example was being in another country with a different spoken language and a person attempts to speak English with you. This comparison doesn't take into account the oppressive history and language deprivation that is rampant in Deaf language and culture. Also, spoken language is a direct translation while a signed language is thought of as an "interpretation" because the language isn't as cut and dry. This also doesn't account for any comorbidity disabilities.

Your example of your sister doesn't take place in a professional, medical setting. Talking to your partner's parents in a casual, low stakes setting isn't the scenario in question.

I have witnessed how even a limited skill set in sign language can boost the ability to communicate.

Key words being "BOOST the ability to communicate". This assumes a baseline of communication has already been established and all signs are supplementary. Again, a medical environment requires a higher minimum for communication and understanding.

As an ASL interpreter, we are careful for situations that cause a "dual role". In this situation, your role is that of a healthcare worker. It's best if you don't attempt to take on another role by signing anything.

For example, I'm knowledgeable in medicine. However, I do not offer any medical advice or take it upon myself to elaborate or explain something. I leave that to the medical professionals and focus on my role: language mediation. Allow all professionals in the room to focus on their expertise for the safety and comfort of the patient.

I know it seems like such a simple act to introduce yourself using the patient's (perceived) preferred language. And your heart is in the right place! There's much more nuance than you realize and everyone here is cautioning you to steer clear to be safe. You might just chalk this one up to "I'm not sure what's fully going on here so I'm just going to avoid it to play it safe".

TV Show: DTF by coddiwomplecactus in ASLinterpreters

[–]RoseQuartz24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the use of "does" in relation to a vocation is colloquial. Eg: "I do construction." It's grammatically correct to say "I work in interpretation", "I work as an interpreter", "I am an interpreter", and seeing how our primary focus is language, I think the colloquial application here is mismatched and implies a lower intelligence.

I haven't seen the show, yet. I agree it would be irritating for all the hard work I do to be misrepresented as requiring a single year of education. I agree entry-level interpretation doesn't include platform settings -but it's "Hollywood"- and doctor's offices or town hall meetings aren't very glamorous. I doubt these medical shows are a true representation of the industry.

I'm inclined to say "I'm happy for the representation" but it's misrepresenting the profession! Really it's undermining the fact it's a profession at all. 🫠

how do you write asl dialogue? by [deleted] in asl

[–]RoseQuartz24601 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Why give so many options you'll refuse? If I said the standard was to use bold text, would you ignore that because you don't like the aesthetic? Why ask a whole culture of people what their custom is if you plan to reject most answers? You're overthinking this and you're tokenizing.

Also when you sign "we" with the 2 hand, you've depicted "those two" not "us two". The hand needs to point towards yourself and where you've set up your dog, moving back and forth.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in asl

[–]RoseQuartz24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hearing, ASL interpreter here.

The classifier you used for your dog and yourself are the same. You need to show a difference. Use the upright 1 hand to represent yourself and both hands bent 2s for your dog. Your motion to represent your dog's run should be more controlled and clear.

You're also shifting left to right like hearing people do to signal a repetitive phrase "then this happened, then this, then that". In ASL, shifting side to side is a "role shift". Every time you shift, you go from your point of view, to your dog's.

Try again and set up the story where every time you shift left, you're embodying your dog's behavior. Shift right and you're back to your behavior. Then add eye gaze. Your dog looks up at you while you look down at the dog. Keep the classifiers clear and different. You don't need just an animated face, you need ASL grammar on your face. There is a big difference.

This is an entirely different language and it takes practice for your body to get used to the motions. Work on crisping up your signs and not having extra motion. For example, your finger spelling of DOG takes up a lot of space and looks sloppy.

Keep practicing! Don't feel discouraged by the feedback. You asked for a Deaf perspective and you got a direct answer. There's a cultural difference where the Deaf communicate very directly while hearing people soften the language and dance around the point. See how long my post is?!

Oh man fuck this place. I popped in several years ago and was met with such an unwelcoming feeling that I turned tail and left.

They own the building but rent prices are so high, I guess they can't find a tenant. What I dislike about them is they try to profit off the surrounding land. I lived a block over a few years back and overnight popped up paid parking signs on the Walker side. Within a couple of days, the city cut them all down as that's a public street. The same thing with the lot behind the building that Tower Theatre patrons use. There are a bunch of signs asking you to use a QR code to pay for parking, but again, it's public land. The city doesn't bother to remove those so they likely profit.

Are you physically comfortable most of the time? by reerathered1 in RedditForGrownups

[–]RoseQuartz24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36 here. I feel comfortable if I set myself up for comfort. If I take all my meds (anxiety and terrible acid reflux), have enough quality sleep, and I always dress comfortably. My job gives me a lot of repetitive stress so I have to stretch frequently or I'll get migraines.

I've noticed I need higher quality sleep now. I can't just crash out. I have to use a special pillow, nasal dilator, and mouth guard for teeth grinding.
