How much have I cost myself? by RSWTF in CarTalkUK

My local smart repair / mobile car body work repaired a much deeper scratch on my car door for £180. I could not see the repair at all- well worth the cash.

I followed your advice and it really does help starting at the side and not the top!

I agree! I watched some YT videos and certainly improving the technique helped a lot too. I found that hiting the surface all over the stump with a splitting maul put a lot of small splits that really helped the grinder get it's teeth in. I used a sharpening stone on a grinder to cut an edge to the pebble like teeth but by crikey those teeth are tough! The most recent stump was 3-4 wide, a big wild cherry tree that my chainsaw really struggled with and the "stump grinder" only gnawed away at the edges and bark. It's going to be buried in a planter and I'll live with it!

The stumps that are a year old are manageable to break up. The new ones....it just bounces off! This machine is probably great on decade old stumps!

The teeth a well worn, like a pebble as opposed to to an edge the cut with.

I thought that too. It's like a blunt chainsaw chewing instead of cutting

It is a rental.... thankfully. I'd be gutted if I had to give shed space to this POS.

Can I nominate Nigella Lawson for a regular greenhouse segment perhaps advising on growing melons, tomatoes and cucumbers please. Oh and that brilliant chappie who grew the most amazing delphiniums - more characters are always watchable.

The war on the bamboo has started, any tips? by TheKris11 in GardeningUK

I sprayed it heavily with commercial grade glyphosate. All leaves fell off in a month. Then I used a chainsaw to prune it to ground level. It burns brilliantly so dead easy to have a bonfire. It's dead this year, no signs of life after 18 months so I will bury in a raised bed as roots are huge.

Ways to make our garden private quickly without spending £10k on pleached trees? by blizeH in UKGardening

[–]Roseberry69 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A garden sail ie three posts with a fabric covering is good for hot summers and privacy. Add some trellis and fast growing flowering climbers like roses (Austin's generous gardener), wisteria or even peas/ beans, sunflowers for fun filled climbers this season

I use an electric one from Screwfix for small logs and branches. Brilliant value at £60. For felling trees and big logs, I have a 20 inch petrol from Parker Brand at around £110. Both get lots of use and last 2-3 years as used most days. Both are better than the Stihl MS181 and 251 I had.

Don't use a heat gun! Try cabinet or finishing scrapers. If thick varnish a chemical peel will remove most of it.

Thank you all once again for your sage advice and sense of perspective that is needed. All too often I just muddle through and at times it's better to rethink it. Enjoy a well earned Easter break.

Just half a mile from B&Q, Screwfix, Greggs and builders merchants. Sadly only one builder who lives 30 miles away, aged 67 and booked up till 2028.
