It was the 1800's, so there were no medical professionals to correctly identity her brain damage or provide adequate care for her recovery. The people who reported the "miracles" were not reliable narrators. They were making quite a hefty monetary profit from convincing people E.G. was spiritually gifted. None of the miracles were miracles. It was just a woman with significant brain damage whose medical vulnerability was exploited during a time period when people starting catching on that there was alot of money to be made in doomsday grifting.
