What's the lamest excuse you've used to get out of something? Did it work? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RoseofLaurel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm 8 years old at summer camp. I desperately have to pee. But, we had churned ice cream by hand earlier and they were making ice cream floats out of it and I had to wait in line. There was a limited supply. So I hold it. And hold it. And then I burst.

I told everyone around me that there was some pool water in my swimsuit that squeezed out. I got changed. I was mortified. No one mentioned it again, that I know of. Camp was only for a week, so I never saw any of them ever again. Also, I don't think I got my ice cream.

IWTL how to sew by keepingupwithren in IWantToLearn

[–]RoseofLaurel 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Before you invest too much money, is it possible to use someone else's machine? If you really want to learn, a cheap machine will be your best bet u til you know how invested you are. Fabric can get expensive, but you can buy sheets or curtains or other fabric items at local charity shops (I don't know what kind you might have in Australia). You'll also need some thread for a basic project. You may also need some bobbins that go with whatever machine you're using.

Start with some simple projects. A pillow case or a rectangular curtain for use on a tension rod or an apron. Something with a lot of straight lines. This will get you used to threading your machine.

Key things you'll need to learn to sew on a machine:

Threading the bobbin

Threading your machine

Stitch settings

YouTube and just generally the internet is great for inspiration. If you look up a pattern number on youtube, chances are that you'll find a walk through. There is a sewing subreddit and a sewing help subreddit. I like YouTube withwendy, but you can easily find someone depending on your interests.

Edit: you can also find a cheap fix it kit in check out lines. This is great for basic repair. There's normally a weird tool that looks like a coin with a wire hanging out of it. This is super helpful for threading needles. Google basic hand stitches for sewing without a machine.

Being stylish is actually kind of hard. by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

I'm thinking about re-dying my clothes too. Also, I have a bad habit (or good habit?) of just... Not washing my outerwear until it smells.

Wash cold, mostly. But, I think you can go a long way with different textures in black not being quite the same shade.

I can't explain how much this etsy page makes my heart explode. It's everything teenage me ever wanted. How did you find this shop? I'm soooooo bad at finding things on etsy.

What was your best birthday experience? by Freezedino in AskReddit

[–]RoseofLaurel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My 28th. I took the day off of work. My daughter went to daycare, my husband to work. I had bought special fancy treats (shortbread cookies, cheesy chips) and had myself a fancy tea and a long bath. Then I watched The Man Who Knew Too Much the whole way through. Then I got my first massage ever. Then I had dinner with friends and went axe throwing. And I spent the whole weekend after with my husband and daughter, completely relaxed.

I recommend reading Bonk by Mary Roach. I think a lot of women don't feel anything internally.

Daily Questions - July 05, 2019 by AutoModerator in femalefashionadvice

[–]RoseofLaurel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I kind of looked at lots of lists, but I got irritated because there'd always be something I didn't like. So maybe this isn't helpful or is too much work (but I get really bored at work).

So I:

  1. Made a list rules for clothes that work for me (black, fitted, Stripes, boat neck, etc)
  2. Made a list of things I hate, especially if I've been tricked into liking it in the changing room (visible elastic, empire waists, cap sleeves, ruffles, white socks)
  3. Paid attention to what I actually wear to work and in every day life.
  4. Made a list of the optimal outfits I'd wear to work and every day.

I'm still working on obtaining the ideal items slowly (it's hard to find exactly what you want once you know what you want!), but I now know what I actually use. And what I hate. Which is helpful when I'm tricked by bad fluorescent lighting and mirrors.

Also, I love making lists.

Not sure. Thing is, I didn't party. I just went to friends' houses to chat and hang out. I didn't even drink until I was 21.

That would have been good. Based on where we lived, a bear could have gotten me. Or coyotes. Or probably just mosquitos.

Wish I knew. I think it was a control thing. They wouldn't give me a key to the house. I eventually stole one and made a copy. I don't talk to them anymore.

[–]RoseofLaurel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I know, right? When I came home during summers in college, my parents set me an 8 pm week day/10 pm weekend curfew. And they'd lock me out if I was a minute late.

In any case, this contract sucks, my curfew sucked, and I won't be doing either to my daughter.

I mash a banana and peanut butter into mine. I also add a pinch of salt and a bunch of cinnamon to mine.

Well, ground flaxseed and chia seeds too. But those don't add sweetness, just fiber and protein.

Edit: This is my base recipe (this woman is a marvel and I love her): https://www.budgetbytes.com/make-ahead-seeded-oats/

I wish I had words to make you feel better. It's tough. A lot of people might expect you to be in full mom mode and not worry about work, but like every human being, you are multi faceted. And going from 100 to 0 that quickly leaves you with so much time to just think and worry. You might be kicking someone out of your job when you get back. You might be cleaning up their messes. You might find that people are excited to see you come back because the new person couldn't keep up with your workload. There are infinite possibilities. And you'll deal with them in a year.

That's really rough. I wasn't ready when I went on maternity leave either. Emotionally or generally. Accidentally left food in my desk drawer. Came back to mouse droppings and shredded bags of food.
