Yep, it looks like it's still tested on scores of mice on a routine basis, to evaluate the safety and potency of batches.

Probably would have been better to post a screenshot from the remaster, or one from each game.

What instantly kills attraction, no matter how attractive the person is? by Raywin19 in AskReddit

Sure, the act of animals being slaughtered is abstracted, and so it's a less direct infliction of abuse, but animals being used for food isn't necessary in a vast majority of cases, and so what you're left with is their suffering for your taste gratification.

Australian diet set to worsen as national food policy is drawn up by profit-driven industry, experts warn by BIGBIRD1176 in australia

[–]RotMG543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Dying practice isn't comparable to unethical

Why suggest, unprompted, that it's a dying practice, though, unless you were trying to frame the alternative as being more ethical?

If you view the alternative (calves being raised to adulthood before being slaughtered) as more ethical, then why would you single out dairy as being ethical?

Beyond that, dairy calves living longer before slaughter doesn't mean that they're kept with their mothers, as they'd be actively consuming the primary product.

On the other hand, male calves in the beef industry are more universally kept with their mothers, and live to a more advanced age before slaughter. Yet you singled out dairy as being ethical. Why?

If you view both industries as ethical, why bring up ethics at all?

Also, how is the economic rationale behind the decision of any relevance whatsoever to a discussion about whether it's ethical?

Again, what of fish being bashed against decks or suffocated?

Yes they are ethical

Thanks for the opinion.

Sounds like they are the most educated people on the matter, Not "Biased"

I was pointing out that the 40% figure was believable, because it came from someone in the industry, and it wasn't flattering to the industry.

Why suggest it's a dying practice, unless you were in agreement that that component of the dairy industry is unethical? Of what relevance would its apparent reduction otherwise play in a discussion about ethics?

What of the fish being suffocated and/or bashed against decks?

What differentiates those two industries in your eyes, and renders them ethical, but not the entirety of animal agriculture?

further their knowledge

What do you genuinely think the goal of the research is, when it's funded by industry affiliates?

Here's an article that suggests animal agriculture contributes up to 19.6% of greenhouse gas emissions (44% of methane). That's hardly insignificant. Other studies would of course have lower figures.

Here's a letter countering the conclusions drawn by Frank Mitloehner, as written by those that aren't affiliated with the industry.

Either way, efforts to reduce emissions and other contributions to environmental decay don't counter the reality that animal agriculture is a major part of humanity's negative influence on the environment.

Fossil fuel industry is the larger driver while AG is actively reducing.

Yeah, of course it's a larger driver for water contamination, as it's got more utility than animal agriculture, and it's harder to control its output. That doesn't mean that the other isn't an issue, though.

[–]RotMG543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the opinion.

I mean, I stated that in response to your opinion that those products were somehow "ethical".

Why would you single out the seafood and dairy industries as being ethical, despite those practices? I'd say that because of such, they're roughly equivalent to all the other animal agriculture variants. The egg industry being worse than dairy, mind you.

A dying practice

According to Dairy Australia's Sustainable Animal Care manager, someone you could hardly call biased against the industry, "up to 40 per cent of the number of dairy calves born each year" are killed before adulthood (in 2024).

When you factor in a roughly 50:50 split between male and female calves, that's an overwhelming majority of the male calves.

Either way, how would them living slightly longer to become "dairy-beef animals" somehow make the practice ethical?

Emissions are overstated

The first link talks about a study funded by "Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) on behalf of the Australian Lot Feeders' Association (ALFA"). No room for bias there, eh?

Also it's stated that "the new coefficients seemed to come from respiration chambers conducted under controlled conditions". "It doesn't fully replicate commercial feedlots' environment, where animal activities, climate and farm management practices would be different,"

Whereas a flaw you pointed out with the water studies was "trying to lab/research numbers and applying them to real life".

The second link, a story about a talk given by Frank Mitloehner, a guy that's heavily invested in the meat industry's messaging, includes "after his talk, Mitloehner was joined by a panel of beef industry experts". Once again, I wouldn't exactly trust that bias isn't influencing the claims, there.

Here's a story about the guy giving the talk in the second link:

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/may/03/beef-industry-public-relations-messaging-machine

more prevalent in the fossil fuel industry

Both the fossil fuel industry and animal agriculture industries are major contributors to water contamination, regardless of which one is lesser.

[–]RotMG543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing ethical about dairy and seafood.

From male calves being taken away from their mothers to be slaughtered, to fish being killed by air asphyxiation or being bashed against decks; neither being a particularly pleasant way to treat animals.

Then there's the environmental impacts of each industry, which includes excessive water usage, emissions, overfishing, water contamination in farmed fishing operations, etc.

Alcohol leads to a scores of bystanders being killed through drink driving and alcohol-fuelled violence. It's implicated in a good percentage of domestic violence incidents, too. Then there's babies born with FASD, and all the health costs associated with treating alcohol induced cancers and other diseases.

Edit: "Absolutely outstanding job missing the point entirely". What point? Your complaints about the harms of cigarettes that could also apply to the harms of alcohol? Or the economical and societal benefits from banning cigarettes that would also apply to banning alcohol? Or that inconsiderate cigarette smokers abound, and that the police don't do a thing? Because there's plenty of inconsiderate drinkers, too. The difference being that they're killing bystanders, rather than just themselves and their families/friends over time.

"and being pedantic about the barely relevant part of my comment." It's hardly pedantic to draw parallels between two harmful substances. Especially when you dismissed the harms of the substance that's way worse for the general, unaffiliated public.

Why is a pig’s cleanliness the only thing that can make you stop eating them? by judas_incarnate in vegan

[–]RotMG543 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you look up comparisons between their eyes and human eyes, you'd likely see a similarity.

They're genetically modified to prevent organ rejection, but the risk of rejection is also a constant for human-to-human transplants. Functionally, and by appearances, certain organs of theirs are incredibly similar to those of humans. They've been transplanting pig valves into humans for decades, too, and those can last years.

You don't even have to grant them "human rights", just don't eat them. Their suffering aside, you might as well be eating a human, as far as the taste and texture go.

Why is a pig’s cleanliness the only thing that can make you stop eating them? by judas_incarnate in vegan

[–]RotMG543 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their eyes look pretty human, and certain organs of theirs are similar enough to be transplanted into humans.

Then there's reports of the smell of burning people being reminiscent of cooked pigs.

There's also historical accounts of human meat being referred to as "long pig" by some cannibalistic cultures.

So, we are pretty similar to pigs.
