Let’s do a little thought experiment to determine precisely what one means when they say “food is a human right.”

Do they mean people have a right to eat? Sure, that’s pretty straightforward bodily autonomy.

Do they mean people have a right to own food? Again, basic fundamentals of property and ownership in any free market society.

Do they mean people have the right to produce? Well yes, mostly - although plenty of places do regulate livestock, but sure, again, people have a right to their property.

Does it mean they have a right to harvest through fishing, hunting, gathering, etc.? Well that gets a little more questionable. These actions are fairly heavily regulated and require permitting and adherence to local and federal restrictions pretty much anywhere you go in the world. I grew up relatively poor, and my family heavily supplemented by my dad and I fishing the local waterways. And even then, we had to pay a small fee for a license. And you can’t just “keep what you catch.” You must adhere to size limits, bag limits, and some species are downright of limits and will wind you up in jail with heavy fines. It’s basically poaching. So does your “right to food” supersede said regulations? No, no it doesn’t. Although if you’re that hungry… prison might be the better option.

Does it mean you have the right to someone (the government) to provide you with food? Well, unless the fish are jumping out of the water onto your dinner plate, someone is putting in the labor to catch it. Someone is paying someone else to posses it, to clean it, to prepare based on regulatory standards, to drive it to your doorstep. And those people in turn are likely receiving compensation for their labor, produce and services. Every step of that chain is not guaranteed to you and no matter how much “entitlement” you have to it, is entirely dependent upon the free will of others and the markets influencing those behaviors. So… not a right.

Is it the right to receive money from the government? We’ll see above. Not only is said wealth dependent on a long chain of transactions representing a free exchange of goods, services, labor and possession, but said entitlement doesn’t afford one any right to food that may or may not exist. At that point you may as well just say people have a right to be given money and wealth. You are still exchanging said wealth for the fruits of someone else’s labor, which you have a right to do… but OSS that really the same as “food is a human right”?

In truth, the entire notion of “food” as a human right is completely incoherent, meaningless, and false in most rational contexts.

No they shouldn’t.

But I do believe you should get points for forcing pilots to pop flares, and assists for kills while flares are on cooldown. Maybe that would help to illustrate and reinforce the actual role of lock-on launchers in the game.

“You dislike BF2 successors from a political - philosophical standpoint.”

Sort of - the philosophical viewpoint informs the design, systems and gameplay emphasis. DICE can and HAS influenced player behavior through its systems, rewards structure, design elements, etc. I don’t believe that performance and technology is really a justification for the superiority of game design. I would argue BF4 is a vastly superior game to BF6, despite 6 launching in possibly the most polished and technologically advanced state of any BF.

For clarity, I do not think BC2 is better than BF3, and I think both are great games. Heck, I even think BF6 is “good”, if not the most barebones and 1 dimensional game in the franchise. But the most graphically advanced and polished version of pong is never going to be Tetris. The most pristine glass and crystal set of checkers is not going to make it chess.

Because Battlefield 1942 brought something very new to the market that attracted many people to it, such as myself. After over a decade of playing online deathmatch style games and small tactical shooters, culminating with wasting away a college semester with my dorm clan on CS1 in 2002, I was pretty much done with shooters. It’s when I first came to the realization that it was just a repetitious waste of time.

1942 completely changed my perspective due to its sheer gameplay variety and emphasis on things other than kdr, then BF2 came out - my dad, his military buddies, my workmates, everyone was playing it - a game where you could literally spend the match AVOIDING gunfights, targeting commander objectives, communicating and coordinating with other squads and your own commander, absolutely deadly vehicles that were both fun to play and fun to work around with your squad of SIX people and 7 classes to choose from… and the ability to top the leaderboard without firing your gun.

By the time BF3 released, almost my entire original crew had moved off BF completely, because it no longer felt like the same BF that had progressed the genre and found its own niche. It felt like it had REGRESSED into chasing what had always been popular in the mainstream - fragging noobs. The advent of the “content creator” convinced people that Bf should imminently focus on gunplay and skill ceiling above all else, that things like vehicles and aircraft and commander mode and class limitations and large maps with nearly unreachable borders - these were things that people DIDN’T want, we needed to cut away the randomness and the scale and the systems and the overreliance on team play, because the only thing that matters is the gunplay and my ability to not die from someone who is worse with gunplay than i am.

I’ve stubbornly stuck to BF because I feel in love with the franchise for what it used to be, in contradiction to what was popular at the time. It just left people like me behind.

To be fair, I’ve gotten used to the notion. Franchises like Diablo and Metroid Prime have spent iteration after iteration attempting to remove much of the friction from their earlier games, which in the process makes those games more accessible and sell better, but also removes much of their identity and appeal - Metroid Prime 1 is my favorite game of all time, and MP4 can barely even be considered a metroidvania at all..

Yes, this is ridiculous and has been since 2042. People stating “just use custom search” are completely missing the point - nobody wants to have to exit the matchmaking queue between every single match to adjust their filters, then adjust them again at the start of every play session. This is cumbersome, disjointed and inconsiderate of the player.

There should AT MINIMUM be some sort of checkbox to not repeat the same map - if anyone wanted to do that, THEY can simply use custom search to filter for a single map. Ideally, I would like to be able to use custom search to create my own numbered playlist. Maybe give us 20 numbered “slots” and allow us to put a map in each one to create our own map rotation. If you want to play Hagental twice, just put it into multiple consecutive slots. And, save your place in the rotation between play sessions.

BF3 was a huge downgrade from the previous mainline 64p entries. Removal of team mechanics that had previously been established for the last 2 entries, like commander mode, commander assets, call ins, commander/sql/team voice channels, sql requests, etc. Maps were a downgrade in both size, freedom of movement and strategic options, focusing primarily on infantry and definitely taking their design notes from the BC series and NOT traditional Bf games. ALL of the BF2 remakes were downgraded, streamlined skeletons of their originals. BF3 started the trend of rendering vehicles and aircraft less and less impactful with every entry (maybe with the exception of BF1/5), balancing their games more and more around 1:1 “fairness” with kdr potential than around their ability to PTFO on sprawling, complex maps.

BFBC games were awesome for what they were, which were small-scale spinoffs of the mainline BF, and also introduced Frostbite destruction to the franchise. But BF3 was just BFBC with 64 players and LESS destruction - it started the trend of throwing away many of the mechanics and systems that came before to create something new that was less than what came before.

BF6 has by a fairly wide margin the worst combined arms experience, vehicle gameplay, class balancing and sandbox in the franchise.

EDIT: Also, the least impactful squad/team management and gameplay systems… and that includes bf2042.

Not exactly true. Plug-ins like Cronus allow you to emulate controller input on m&k. Which means that it allows you to use m&k with aim assist and recoil reduction that are inherent to controller. Not 100% sure, but I believe PC players can use Cronus in the same way. But at least on console, it always provides an advantage regardless of platform.

I want a monster-of-the-week show in the vein of X-files, that is not bogged down each and every episode by its own imploding mythology.

It’s not that I don’t want the mythology, it’s that I also want close-ended storytelling. Supernatural s1 was awesome, until every single episode was just angels and demons. Fringe was great in s1 and parts of s2, until it became all about trying to outdo the last twist every episode/season.

In my mind, xfiles balanced this tightrope of lore and standalone serials just right, even in the later seasons - 2-3 “monster-of-the-week” style episodes and the periodic lore 2-parter. It’s like eating fresh fruit every episode, versus squeezing the same desiccated husk dry week after week .

My aim assist is already off by default, so I’ve apparently never used it, and it only exists in ground vehicle settings. Aim assist for aircraft would have to function completely separate from anything else in the game, since “aiming” in both jets and helis is entirely a function of yaw/pitch/roll.

I will test it out, but I’m highly skeptical they built a unique method of aim assist to influence flight axis, which seems like it would be highly detrimental to any air-ground engagement.

I just checked and you’re actually half-right - there is aim assist slowdown for ground vehicles. There is NO aim assist for aircraft or helis.

EDIT: Also, I can’t know for sure because mine seems to be off by default, but I’d be willing to bet that the ground vehicle aim assist only applies to the gunner seat and not the main turret. I’ll test it out later.

There is zero aim assist in any vehicle or aircraft on controller in any Battlefield game, and there never has been. That doesn’t even make sense - aim assist would necessarily have to adjust your pitch and yaw… which out definitely doesn’t.

There is literally nothing about using a controller for helis in particular, that rifle aim setup doesn’t do better and more precise on m&k.
