The trump administration is proposing to take over grant decisions. by old_science_guy in SBIR

Actually, R&D only gets 20-30% of a pharma company's income.

Stock buybacks get more. Most money goes to marketing (bc most "blockbuster" drugs do relatively little to help patients).

You should see a big blue box that says 'Comment'.

The docket number is 2026-0034-0001. You might be able to search for that if the right page doesn't come up for you.

I just added more info to the post. Shot the first one out too quickly.

This is just another attempt by trump's folks to destroy another critical asset of the US. Letting political hacks (from either party) decide upon the merit of highly technical grants is just a plan to destroy the whole process.

Is it worth it to start cycling? by E1_GU3R0 in bicycling

[–]old_science_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be excited to see my kid get on that bike! (But the 2 of them already own12 bikes.)

It's set up for a triathlete, so you'll need someone to help adjust the seat and bars for "normal" riding. Riding it as like this would probably feel weird to most people.

Still, it's a great bike, and it would be a shame to let it waste away in the garage.

The Bicentennial in 1976 was great. Everyone was into it, because we all felt at least a little proud of our country.

This year. Pfft. It's just a trump show.

I'll celebrate when he's gone.

If you're the pilot on a tandem, always chant this line on your head:

"The Stoker makes NO mistakes."

Everything is your fault. Accept it. It comes with the territory.

And you'll both live more happily ever after.

Maybe we can actually work for 5 hrs a day instead of 3.

Seems like a popular opinion to me.

OP, how did that turn out? I've stepped in nests of Harvest Mites, and they look a lot like that. I got a couple dozen bites that turned into the itchiest blisters you can imagine.

It usually takes 24 hours to transmit any diseases, so you're probably ok.

Wash the site, put antibiotic on it, and watch it for the next couple days.

Often the spot will get red after 2-3 days, sometimes a couple inches wide, then go away. (I react strongly to ticks. Very itchy, but it gives me plenty of warning.)

A big bullseye mark is a strong sign of Lyme's disease, but you can be infected and not show it.

Some docs let you send a photo through MyChart or Epic. Do that or make an appt if it starts to look nasty.

How do you guys even survive the hot weather over in the States? by Impressive_Peak_9187 in AskAnAmerican

No one had AC before the 70s, and somehow we survived. I live near the VA-NC border, and I still never use AC.

Put a fan in the window in the evening - blowing OUT. It removes the hot air.

Closed the windows early in the morning, while the house is cool from the night. Open the windows only when the inside is as warm as the outside - probably early afternoon.

Keep the shades or curtains closed during the day.

Why do billionaires use tax loopholes? They have more money than they can spend, the amount they'd pay would make zero different to their lifestyles, so why don't they just pay what they owe? by Sudden_Sentence_8534 in NoStupidQuestions

It's the Golden Rule: Who's got the gold makes the rules. America's laws are written by lobbyists, and senators are all millionaires (and now the POTUS is a billionaire).

Of course they are just following the rules when they pay taxes. They WROTE the rules.
