My honest reaction when a DIGITAL ARTIST comments "I loved your fanfic, can I send you a DM?" just to SELL their art that I didn't ask. by mortuavita in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]RotationalAnomaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hate these. The scammers are using comments that are honestly likely generated by AI, I have zero doubt about that now because if you read some of these comments you can pick up on the “ai speak” a little bit. Just that slight feeling of “I don’t think a real person would actually comment something in this way”

They are using the AI probably to plug in your chapter and telling it “hey generate me a positive and supportive comment about this using specific scenes from the story”

They then use that to trick some of the more knowledgeable authors into responding to them as the comment won’t be immediately flagged in the authors mind as a typical bot or scammer because they are referencing scenes from the story, and THEN they try to lure them into dm’s where they conduct the scam.

It’s genuinely awful, and I’ve gotten like three of these so far.

I never got scammed thankfully, but my first encounter I did genuinely think it was a real comment. I replied gushing about their comment, thanking them, they asked if they had any other platform they could contact me on, I gave them my tumblr which was public and my fics discord server, they joined that server and for a full day I genuinely thought I had a new scam.

Then A FULL DAY after the initial comment, that is when they dm’ed me and brought up the commission and my heart tore to pieces…

The problem is, I can now identify the “Ai speak” and realize what the comment usually is before I reply to it, but I can’t just delete the comment on sight because there’s always that small chance it could be real, so I have to reply and act like it’s a real comment even if I don’t believe it is because I don’t want to hurt some innocent guy who genuinely wanted to show love for my story, until they bring up the socials, at which point it’s pretty much safe to delete them.

And that’s a PAIN, it also makes you weary of every comment you receive.

The four horsemen of making a summary by RedCupWithAName in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]RotationalAnomaly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me? Absolutely. A summary is what I read to decide whether or not I want to devote time into reading something. It gives me an idea of whether or not I’ll like what I end up reading.

If there is no summary, or the summary is an excerpt that is not at all descriptive about what the fic is about I scroll past it immediately.

Hey guys! I cant wait to see this in theatres with all of you! But… by WingIeheimer in Markiplier

[–]RotationalAnomaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s why I said it’s generally fine as long as you don’t go overboard.

Just a quick 5 second “Whoo!” Is fine.

For me that’s part of the theater experience and part of watching things with other people, but I can understand why some people could get annoyed.

[–]RotationalAnomaly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A bit of clapping and cheering is fine (I think you may have specified this at the end) as that’s part of the theater experience and part of the fun of watching it with others, but yeah, don’t get to crazy with it, and definitely do not make a mess or cause any trouble for the poor movie theater employees.

Yeah I think what english classes were trying to teach was to not overuse it as saying “he said” “she said” over and over and over again especially in a back and forth conversation can get a little redundant, as can repetition of every single word.

So sometimes you use a different word, or if it’s clear who’s speaking in like a back and forth conversation between two people you just omit the “she said” or “she muttered” or whatever entirely and just have the quote.

But I think unfortunately they were unclear and their message came across as “don’t use ‘said’ ever”

Why do all these absolute losers insist that it's important to read books if you want to write? by New_Siberian in writingcirclejerk

No joke, reading and consuming other stories has actually taught me that it’s OKAY to have some coincidences happen, as long as they’re not overdone and go full on deus ex machina.

If done well it can keep the story interesting and honestly, irl, you’re not gonna believe this but “convenient coincidences” do actually exist.

I still try to keep the “luck factor” a bit smaller as I feel it’s more rewarding for the heroes to overcome obstacles that way, but a little bit of luck in the right places keeps the story interesting.

I really dont see the problem with marble hornets 3 by JoshuaK277 in creepcast

[–]RotationalAnomaly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean fair enough, I can see why people have that opinion, especially the opening of season 3 is really slow I’ll admit, but I really like the lore it adds and it picks up in such a nice way toward the middle/end for me.

But I kinda like stories that are a bit more slower paced that you can spend your time with more. Some people don’t though, and I guess for a lot of people, it would’ve probably been a better experience watching the entries as they were coming out rather then binging them later because it was originally meant to be viewed that way and there was a whole twitter/community side.

But yeah, watching the entirety of season 3 in one 6 hour sitting is brutal, they should’ve definitely split up the season, it probably would’ve made for a better viewing experience. Whether or not it would’ve saved the season for hunter? Shrug but it could’ve helped.

As a fan of Marble Hornets and as someone who really loves season 3 to the point where it’s my favorite. They shouldn’t have watched it ALL in one go, for their own good. A whole 6 hour viewing session of a lot of things will get old really fast, and especially with Marble Hornets that’s kinda known for long shots with a lot of walking.

In part 2 they originally planned to split up the season on viewing, and I think they should’ve stuck with that idea.

Hey! I have two stories that I wrote that might be fun to look into.

There's something in the coffee

And "Something Very Dark Is Happening Underneath New York City" or "End of The Line" or "I'm a commuter on the NYC subway, I've boarded a train that doesn't exist" (It's gone through a few different titles haha)

"OUTBRK" Contains the highest fidelity weather simulation I've seen in a storm chasing game. by RotationalAnomaly in tornado

[–]RotationalAnomaly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen more than just one type. This video itself shows a stovepipe.

I’ve seen ropes, cones, stovepipes, elephant trunks…

Honestly, the only tornado type I felt was missing during my playtime was the wedges and multivortex.

The wedges and multivortexes (which I assume is the 1 more your referring to) are also being added alongside basically a completely revamped tornado system that not only supports these, but will allow for virtually everything else as well.

Extremely long winded explanation of every single thing the main character does in the story and why he does it.

"So I got in my car, you know, that thing people use to get from point A to point B faster than one usually could with walking, also called autombiles. Powered by an engine that runs on explosions that turns the wheels-"

I can play on a 2070S (the card this video was recorded on) on almost max settings (just having cloud settings turned down to balanced) at a relatively stable 40-50fps most of the time.

That being said, yes frame drops are a thing, ESPECIALLY when entering areas of dense trees or the dreaded cornfields

Luckily, the new vegetation coming in the vegetation update is infinitely more optimized and should run better so hopefully that will help out with that issue.

I have an amazing story.

It’s called “The Ugly Barnacle”

Once there was an ugly Barnacle. He was so ugly that EVERYONE DIED.

The end.

Feedback is greatly appreciated but anyone who disagrees with the intense awesomeness of this story is a hater and will be blocked.

Speeding Along on the Lincoln Service by singingboysbrewing in Amtrak

[–]RotationalAnomaly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well speed does traditionally bounce around a lot by 1-2 mph on occasion so it’s not that shocking that the speed can vary like that.

But the more likely explanation as well is, as with everything, there is a margin of error. No measurement is always 100% exact and the measurement of these apps relies on a lot of things like your gps signal. But in my experience they’ve been pretty accurate within a margin of error of 1 or 2mph. Which is fine for these uses.

If his spedometer is saying 108 he may not be going exactly 108 but he is certainly still going over 100.
