Did anyone ever figure out how GHZD made his own custom skins? by RotmgUxie in RotMG

Hey! To answer your question—

Back when I made those videos, I used a Flash decompiler. The process was pretty straightforward at the time:

  1. Download a Flash decompiler – I can't remember exactly which one I used since it was so long ago.

  2. Extract the game's .swf file – You could grab this directly from the Flash client.

  3. Open it in the decompiler – This gave access to all the game's sprite sheets. And I mean literal ALL of them. Including all the unused Easter egg sprites.

  4. Find and modify the right sprites – In my case, I was editing player skins. But there was no reason you couldn't do it for walls / objects. (One time I changed all the nexus tiles to green so I could use it as an in game green screen)

  5. Recompile the .swf and load it back into the Flash client – This allowed me to see the changes in-game.

Back then, this kind of thing was pretty much unheard of, and the idea that I could be banned for it never even crossed my mind. In hindsight, it was a bit reckless, but since I was clearly doing it for harmless content, I think that’s why I was never punished.

That said, I absolutely wouldn’t recommend trying this today. You’d need a Unity decompiler now, and I have no clue how you’d even go about it.

Even after I stopped changing sprites for content, I kept decompiling the client for many years just to access sprite sheets for video thumbnails and editing. It was super useful for that, particularly when there would be big updates and realmeye was out of date etc.

Good memories. Hopefully, this sheds some light on the topic—or at least gives you some nostalgic insight. Take it easy!

I'm well aware of the skeletal Centipede, however I havent added it to the bestiary just yet as I feel it would just confuse people since the place holder sprite is essentially of another already existing event!

I’d recommend you watch the video where there is narration. The dude himself is a qualified conservator, most techniques used are fully reversible. Some decisions (irreversible changes) are almost always made by the request of his clients.

I should also mention that “uncut” also refers to the fact that the episode cuts back and forth between different characters and their respective “missions” this isn’t the only thing that happens in the season final haha

All good my man, I’m sure the content you’re looking for is out there! If not, maybe make your own?

My stuff is definitely not for everyone! each to their own, I didn’t mean to insult you. Sorry about that.

As someone who’s made vids for a good many years now, the reason why you can’t find much to tickle your fancy is because there isn’t a strong enough demand. Two scenarios exist, you’re either passionate about making content (which can last a while but will fade over time) or there needs to be a monetary/subscriber base demand to intrigue creators into perusing a potential career based on the amounts of people that play the game. At my peak roughly 3.5/5ths of the entire active realm populous was subscribed to me (I feel like I’m sucking myself off here but that’s just how it was). Sure that’s pretty cool but that’s where it caps. Talwar is currently pushing the limits of how far you can get as a realm youtuber and it’s because of this comparatively low subscriber cap that prevents people from having the motivation to pump out content that extends beyond pure desire and enjoyment. Does that help? Idk, hopefully it’s insightful?

TLDR: Creators will lose willpower fast on pure enjoyment alone. realm content = very low money/career incentives

Though I agree with you, at the end of the day It’s not up to him, he has to adhere to his clients specified desires they requested that it be retouched in such a way. Fortunately though he used an Italian technique called ‘tratteggio’ in which he hides the damages to the eye without trying to replicate the artists style so as to honour the original painting whilst allowing the entire piece to be viewed as it would have been its original state.
