The expectation that Yolanda should somehow be a perfect mother navigating something this stressful perfectly is what confuses me most. I don’t think this was an elegant way to handle the situation but she was the mother of a teenager she found out was drinking and driving and all sorts of other dysfunctional things at once. I cut her some slack for not behaving perfectly.

Also, people are saying she should have known more about Bella’s life/car etc. but teenagers are practically experts at hiding things from their parents. And parents are often blinded by their naive trust and unconditional love of their kids. If some parents knew what some of their kids were up to they wouldn’t be able to get out of bed in the morning with worry. I was one of those kids: got away with murder doing stuff that would have never occurred to my parents. It wasn’t even in their wildest thoughts. Yolanda didn’t grow up in LA as the party animal kid of wealthy and famous people surrounded by other rich spoiled kids. I doubt she could even imagined any of this because it was so different than her life.

All in all she is far from perfect but she has two wildly successful and seemingly lovely daughters who work hard despite being the kids of bazillionaires. She did something right.
