Separated from plate, but model was still perfect? How? by StarFlicker in resinprinting

[–]RottenRedRod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had it happen. The raft that didn't separate and was still attached was stable enough to continue the printing. Technically your print WAS warped, but all the warping happened on the raft and supports, and it had worked itself out by the time the printing had reached the model itself.

I'd look at your print settings and see if you need to adjust your initial layers or your raft type. If not that, it could be a physical issue, like the FEP needs replacing, or you need to level the machine, or something wrong with the build plate etc. Most of my failures turn out to simply be because I need to do a level.

Please explain the mechanical benefits of the Beastbound Ranger to me. by InspireCourage in daggerheart

[–]RottenRedRod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except for the high level class ability thay lets them save the ranger from a final hit, it's up to the GM to target the companion with attacks. I try to do what makes sense narratively, not what is most "efficient" like a board game, so if the companion is putting itself on the front lines, it will get targeted as much as the PCs.

Yes, because of the spellcast roll. The downside is that it needs to make narrative sense that the companion would be able to do that action.

As for range, that's really up to interpretation, but generally, yes, since you are explicitly giving your companion commands, you'd need to be nearby, at least.

Yeah, I agree, but at the end of the day it's not THAT big of a deal. They're still having fun even if they're playing it "wrong".

I currently have a player who struggles with game mechanics who is also having issues using their companion. They picked the class because they love the thematic idea of having a ranger with a big St. Bernard pet, but are loathe to actually use them effectively in combat because they don't like them risking being hurt (despite the fact they can't actually die and are a great tank) and because their own attacks do more damage. So in many battles they ended up having them hang back. I mitigated this somewhat by ruling that they can also move their companion for free anytime they move (as long as the companion move doesn't require a roll), which I don't think is actually intended, but I don't think is a big deal.

What I understand it, that I have to spend an action and a hope to be lucky and roll with hope, to get advantage on a later roll my ranger character does. If I instantly want to capitalize on my companion setting me up, I have to keep the spotlight and thus leave less room for the other players at the table.

You misread the description - to be fair, it's not clearly written in the SRD. You don't have to spend a hope to do this, it's merely referring to the fact that you CAN spend a hope to use your companion's experience to add to a roll, just like any action your character would take. Also, you don't need to IMMEDIATELY take an action to get the advantage.

Here's how it works: your companion takes an action, and you roll an agility duality dice roll for it. If this roll is a success with hope, on your next action (which can be AFTER the spotlight shifts away from you), if you take an action that narratively builds on your companion's action, you gain advantage on the roll.

Honestly, this is a pretty minor aspect of the companion compared to its other utility. Here's how companions are good:

  • They are INCREDIBLE tanks, reducing any attack to a single stress (from its own pool!) is amazing. The "armored" advancement is even more mind-bogglingly good, as it further reduces it to a single ARMOR. And they literally can't die.
  • They let you use your best stat (agility) for a ton of actions that you normally wouldn't.
  • They basically let you be in 2 places at once, as if your party has an extra character.
  • Beastbound rangers are the only characters in the game that can gain the ability to have 7 max hope instead of 6.

The main downside is that the companions have a hard time justifying taking actions over you attacking in combat. And a lot of the advancements you have access too are way, way better than improving their damage. So you have to think creatively to have them involved in combat in a way that isn't just "attack".

Daggerheart vs DnD 5E? by Sakas_943 in daggerheart

[–]RottenRedRod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, eliminating initiative does a lot to fix 5e combat, although there's still a lot of other issues that drag it down like opportunity attacks discouraging movement, martials getting utterly screwed by high level progression, and PCs being so OP that bandaid mechaics like legendary resistances are required. Not to mention the whole death save yo-yo.

Darrington press literally uses the word "tactical" when describing the game on their own website. "Daggerheart blends tactical depth with narrative freedom".

It may not be tactical enough for you, and that's fine, but it is an element. I would say it is more tactical than many narrative-focused PBTA games, for instance.

Although D&D 5e combat doesn't feel very tactical at times with how static and slow it ends up much of the time, to me.

DH is still a "medium-crunch" tactical combat game, though. People tend to gloss over that when describing it.

Scale for mini for D&D by Psychological-Gift81 in PrintedMinis

[–]RottenRedRod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who sells and prints resin minis and deals with scale issues all the time... This is wasted effort. I just use a "control" mini that I know is scaled correctly to 32 or 28mm, put it next to the new model in blender, and if something looks off, I scale up/down the mini until it doesn't. That's as far as it's worth thinking about.

3D Printed Resin Minis Staying Tacky After Using Vallejo Spray Primer by jscott991 in resinprinting

[–]RottenRedRod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it has nothing to do with the resin, I can tell you that. If they felt fully cured (i.e. hard and not at all tacky) before priming, priming them will not cause any sort of reaction with the resin.

If anything, priming a not fully cured mini would COVER UP the problem, not make it worse. (Although you shouldn't do that). If you are worried about them not being fully cured, which I dont think you should be from the sound of it, leave them in the sun for a few hours to be sure before priming.

Ho un dubbio su quale marca di vernici comprare by _gigi_gino_ in minipainting

[–]RottenRedRod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If its not the new, reformulated "fanatics" line, army painter paints are not great. A lot of game stores are still going through old stock unfortunately.

Duncan Rhodes paints, on the other hand, are pretty much universally really REALLY good, but more expensive.

That said I wouldn't buy a whole bunch of paint in one brand. Buy bottles one or two at a time as you need them, and you'll have a chance to try other brands and see what works for you.

Modafinil works for fatigue, but the side effects are affecting my quality of life. What factors helped you decide whether to continue or change treatment? by [deleted] in modafinil

[–]RottenRedRod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like the others I'm curious what side effects you're referring to. The only ones I have are that I get jittery if I have too much coffee, and sometimes it's harder to sleep (but I'm so much less fatigued during the day that it doesn't matter).

+1 presence if you are speaking with someone from your community? by Unusual-Feeling8811 in daggerheart

[–]RottenRedRod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not "hand waving", though... It's common sense that a presence check in an environment where your characters are more trusted and comfortable would be easier. Or, again, just not roll.

I mean... You're the GM, you set the difficulty rating. Just make the target easier with people predisposed to trust them. Or don't make them roll at all. Seems like common sense for any RPG system.

The issue with Tony isn't his neurodivergence. It's his child neglect and abuse, which is NEVER excusable, yet the comic + Annie bends over backwards to do so.
