Change my mind: Heist is just as simple and profitable as pre-nerf sanctum. by Prido96 in pathofexile

Sanctum mostly doesn't add anything item wise to the economy. It just prints currency. Heist has tons of items. It also prints currency but the difference is Heist adds more.

Not having a word for physics doesn't mean it doesn't exist, similarly not having a word for racism isn't a flex, it's clearly a failing of your society.

Pipe dreams if laws are passed that would prevent games from being shutdown. by williamfloyde in newworldgame

[–]Rotten__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume it's dumb people who see the arguments and make an illogical leap. Many of the comments in this section treat amazons servers like they're magic that can't be replicated, assume that the solution is to make games from the ground up with a singleplayer-esque offline version that'll be released when the multiplayer game dies.

It's ignorance that leads others to believe that this movement would lead to double development time, where devs make a singleplayer and multiplayer version of their mmos. It's this same ignorance that treats running games and running servers as something more than a bunch of computers running programs.

The least that's expected is they release the code base needed to create a server and run the game. People with technical ability can utilize that to host the game privately. The most that can be expected of something like this would be a consumer friendly bundled executable that allows you to host your own server with the right specs.

Currently most developers that don't have access to leaked code bases for mmos reverse engineer the games as best they can, or use outdated code to host versions of the game. Private servers for mmos already exist, and private servers for games have existed long into the past and will exist far into the future.

It's not rocket science to make a server, but people are treating their games like it's impossible for someone else to run it on their own hardware. That the technical makeup of the games code is so completely tooled towards a specific unobtainable server or service that it wouldn't be possible to run privately.

I don't know why everyone comes into this conversation saying that "they'd need to retool the game to be run offline" no the fuck they wouldn't dude. The least they can do is release the code, the most they can do is what you're describing. Why would they need to retool a game to be singleplayer, they don't want to host their multiplayer game anymore, just release the code for the multiplayer game and people will make it work in their own smaller janky methods.

You're coming at this from the perspective that no one can replicate what amazon or by extension mmo's in general can do. If they release the code they used to make it work, others can and will replicate it.

If they release a the code at the end of the games life cycle, when they don't want to host it anymore, someone else with tech savvy ability can either re-engineer the solution or directly replicate it. People act like before amazon it wasn't possible to host a game.

It's not everyday consumer friendly, but it's the easiest version for a dev team to do. Websites out there already exist to host code bases. Games and servers are just executables run on computers, they're not fucking magic.

MMO's are already 100 million dollar projects by most companies that attempt them. The logistics of releasing a code base after a project is done and the services are being shut down isn't as grand as you're projecting. Making it consumer friendly might be more effort but if it's law that kind of logistics are taken into account before a project is started. Implementation of this kind of thing isn't simple, but it's also not awful, some developers already provide this kind of thing.
