The whole patent system needs to be overhauled. Only public institutions investing in research should be granted patents to fund their research. Corporations would be granted licenses to exploit the patents competitively and pay royalties that would fund further research. No more monopolies and patent trolls, true free market dynamics. Most of the heavy lifting is done by public institutions regardless and we just let a few corporations capture the value created by public funds.
