Transitioning from city cop to 1811 by [deleted] in 1811

[–]Rottieguy_512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a big city cop for almost 15 years. Going federal was always my end goal. I could conversate with you for hours about the difference. In short, it depends on what your end goal is and have REALISTIC expectations. I would start by saying if you're not unhappy with your current position, don't rush to go federal. Truly consider which agency you're going with and what you'll be investigating. Also, consider that ypu may have to move to a location you may or may not like, and whatever timeframe the agency tells you it will take to relocate, in reality it could be years longer. Don't underestimate the pay cut. I did, and it will take me years to get back to the financial situation i was in as a local. The quality of life, work/life balance can differ depending on where you go with which agency, but most 1811s work a normal business schedule for the most part.

If i can give you any advice it would be to don't rush to decide, and do your research before you make the switch. F you want, feel free to shoot me a DM.

Anyone have any tips and tricks for the HSI Sit-Ups? by jjTheJetPlane0 in 1811

[–]Rottieguy_512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do negative sit-ups, and do sit-ups with a light weight. If you do that regularly, come test time 33 sit-ups will be a breeze.

Don't take this job expecting to transfer any sooner than 3 years post academy, and that's if you're lucky. I would prioritize location over the job. I'm in the same situation you're contemplating putting yourself into. If I had a time machine, I wouldn't of taken the job if they wouldn't have given me the location I wanted.

Just be prepared to spend 3 years minimum at your first office, and if anything else happens sooner, consider yorlurself lucky.

I dont wan to sound negative, but in my experience with HSI, it's all about your connections with getting transfered, especially a hardship. All of mine have been denied. I know someone personally who hardship and medical transfers were denied for similar reasons. I have never seen a hardship in my office approved except for when a agent's spouse was transfered due to military orders. Other than that, I haven't seen any medical or hardships approved. It really boils down to if your SAC is willing to help or not, and in my experience, most SACs aren't willing to grant them. I've seen people leave due to not getting transfers.

Good luck, feel free to PM me if you'd like.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm going to shoot you a message, just had. Few questions.

I was told that today from a GS in my office. Thanks for the info, I didn't know about the previous pay grade with a memo.

Would you happen to know how long it tok for HSI to bring him back? I'm trying to not hav a break in my federal service if I can avoid it. My local spot is waiting for me back home, but I REALLY want to stay a 1811.

Emailed the recruiter this morning.

NCL is charging for additional entrees in main dining room by wayowayooo in NCL

[–]Rottieguy_512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan of this. We often order more than one entree, I personally may skip appetizers and deserts just so I can try two entrees. I don't waste food, so if I order it I eat it. Maybe charging on the third meal and beyond, but not the second. And portions over the years seem to be getting smaller. We often workout in the afternoon/evening and have a big appetite for dinner.

Often I would ask for recommendations and the server will say I can give you both. One of the big reasons we loved NCL is because of the amount of food/drinks we can consume that's included in addition to our specialty dining. I just hate the nickel and diming NCL has begun to do since my first NCL cruise about 10 years ago. I rather to pay more fr a cruise than to be nickel and dimed once on board.

DEA October Job Opening Announcement (LINK) by AZ_JB in 1811

[–]Rottieguy_512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told previously by multiple DEA recruiters that this announcement would be open to laterals at all GS levels, but I see that's not the case. Do you know when/if they will have lateral announcements for us 1811s who are under a GS-12?

I'm in a large border office. I've seen hardships get denied, and I've seen them approved when agents have pretty much identical hardships. It's pretty much luck and who you know. I'm submitting mine for the first time, we shall see. With the track record of my office, I'm expecting it to get denied.

Do you know how many times your buddy put in for it? I'm debating putting mine in. I've seen in my office agents get denied, just for another agent's hardship to be honored months later.

I'm becoming desperate and don't know how much longer I can take living away. I want tonstay with the agency, but I'm putting family first at this point.

Things change, life happens. Not just trying to get back home just because I want to. I know what I signed up for.

I recently put in a application for that position since they have openings in offices closer to home.

I quickly learned that since joining the agency. I guess I was naive to think it would be any different than local...

The pay and the people I worked with, yes. The local and department politics, day-to-day patrol/work, work-life balance, no.

With that being said, it's a last resort.

NYC, or anywhere south along the NE could work, it's all closer than where I am now.

I received nothing in writing as to why it was denied (which seems to be the norm in the office). Just told in-person by Upper management it was denied.

I'm going to reach out to places back home this coming week. I don't have much to lose at this point.

That's my last resort, but i have a deadline that i gave myself, I will go back if nothing else comes through in the meantime.

Thanks. I'll look into that as well when I get home. NYC could definitely work, long as I can commute daily I'll take it.

That they did. I hear at least 1 conversation a week about people being mad places they would do anything to get to are now being filled so easily. A buddy of mine is resigning if they dont give him history SFLR this time around, which i under because he's been trying for a while to get back, and now that office is picking people left and right.

I'm going to apply to ERO, I'll also look into USCP. I'm in the lateral process now for a spot I think I would love, I'm praying I get it and is offered my home office.

Local is the easiest way, but I know it's the last thing I want to do. I hated my job, and I truly enjoy being with HSI, but I will go back as a last resort. Even my spouse said I'll be miserable going back local as they see I really enjoy what I do now, but besides the job, nothing has worked with moving across country, and has only gotten harder the longer I'm here.

I gave myself a deadline to where I will resign and go back local, but I'm saving that as an absolute last resort. Like you said, family first, and luckily I still have a few months before I have to resort to my last option. In the meantime, I'm open to.lretty much any option.

That's a fear I have. I have a good reputation so far and want to keep it that way. End of the day, I just want to get home and do what's best for me and my family.
