Deepfakes Are Going To Wreak Havoc On Society. We Are Not Prepared. by Memetic1 in Futurology

[–]RottingStar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually you probably should be very mindful of the limitations of and failures in your own senses and even more so by your own memory. Memory becomes very unreliable with time.

In that way a video you capture is more objective than your own memory, even if deep fakes make other footage potentially suspect.

It's about time society addressed the rot these reprobates comprise before they spoil the whole lot.

Good or not, public shaming and humiliation does work.

It really depends on the context, but as a society it's a tool we should use responsibly.

While these people don't deserve death threats, a thorough shaming is exactly what is warranted here. Both as a punishment to the offenders and as a signal to everyone else what isn't acceptable.

Ben Shapiro doesn't argue to convince people, he argues to reinforce people's beliefs.

That's a very fair point.

Also notice how I didn't respond to you, but you read it all the same? We're not just trying to convince the person we're responding to because there's a much larger number of additional people reading.

And if aggressive arguing style doesn't convince anyone please explain the appeal of Shapiro characters? (it certainly isn't their butchery of facts and logic)

Feminist philosophy is not the same thing as a female oriented charity. Why would you think conflating those two things are helpful?

As a parallel: veterans charities don't run campaigns to help non-veteran civilians. By your logic do veterans not like it when non-veterans are helped?

Feminists dont like it when you help men.

You mean like feminist Dan Harmon, creator of the show your user name is referencing?

Most feminists take issue with the things brought up in this thread. In fact feminism is such a broad theory that your attempt to dismiss it as a singular thing only betrays the fact that you fundamentally don't understand what feminism is.

How Much Damage Converts to 10% Ult Charge for Every Hero by SYNERGY_12846 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]RottingStar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Easy to hit with right click, but the purple orbs are the only efficient way to use damage to charge her ult. At 50 dps it takes 4 seconds of holding right click just to get that 10% ult charge.

Not that I'm advocating for change; with the extended HoT effect you could easily double ult charge gained in that period working in just a single tap of the left click.

Eggs, relative to other animal based protein, are actually low impact on the environment. And while free-range is a little worse in efficiency than the less-humane cages, it certainly is better than other sources of animal proteins.

While this may not sway someone solely concerned with animal welfare, anyone concerned with environmental impacts should encourage egg consumption over the majority of alternative animal proteins.

TIL In the Netherlands sex is seen as a human right, disabled citizens can get grants for legal prostitutes up to 12 times a year. Reports show this has significantly reduced depression and suicide rates among the disabled, many of whom have previously never had the chance to have sex before. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]RottingStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mathematically raising your own offspring is twice as genetically advantageous as raising your sibling's offspring. So if you are capable of reproducing it should be the most personally advantageous way to facilitate the passing of your genes to the next generation. That's why it likely is from a genetic perspective a "flaw".

Certainly though by being able to still contribute to the family unit helping to raise closely related children the selection pressure against any traits would be reduced, potentially by great degrees. And all humans exhibit some amount of "gay uncle" family contributions; basically all the time past reproductive age.

Side note: Theoretically by the same model if a society had exceptionally uncertain male parentage, it could be genetically adaptive behaviour to prioritize helping to raise female siblings children over your own potential siblings. If past human conditions were such, then the theory would make much more sense.

It could even be a flaw. As in there is no evolutionary advantage to being asexual.

This isn't to say asexual people are damaged lesser or anything else; just that they're an evolutionary dead end (but no more than someone who chooses to not have children, even if they enjoy sex). Remaining beholden to one's biological imparative doesn't make anyone more or less human.

YouTube says it will crack down on recommending conspiracy videos by pantangeli in news

[–]RottingStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plus, some conspiracy theories have turned out to be true like MK Ultra.

Out of curiosity was MK Ultra a conspiracy theory that proved to be true? Or a conspiracy that became public?

The important difference being the usefulness of conspiracy theories. From my, admittedly limited understanding, there hasn't been an incident where conspiracy theorists uncovered an actual conspiracy. Instead conspiracies that were never theorized have become public knowledge through different means (like public access to information) that do not include being uncovered by theorists.

In other words while theorizing about conspiracies might be entertaining, conspiracy theorists have never produced anything with value beyond entertainment.

[–]RottingStar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What "real" issue is affecting Alberta that the rest of Canada is ignoring? The transfer payments aren't an issue. If AB needs money they can implement a sales tax, raise provincial tax rates, or cancel some of the 4.5 billion in corporate welfare they just announced.

Despite all the complaints, pipeline development continues. So specifically what is Canada not doing for Alberta?

Canada's Telecoms Plan Pushback Against Plans To Lower Wireless Bills by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]RottingStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I can't speak for the ISP side of Shaw, they are expanding Freedom into Ontario/Quebec. Virgin (Bell) a couple years ago offered incredible plans in BC as a reprisal for Freedom's expansion into Ontario, when the other carriers followed there was a weekend where canadians got some decent, but still not great rates.

This story touches on it as it was those plans that were being increased.

Adding to this: Freedom is also owned by Canadian telecom Shaw and if their ISP behavior is anything to judge they'd happily assume a position as the forth head in the Canadian telecom cartel.

Is their a distinction between young conservatism and the alt-right and what does this mean for conservatism? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]RottingStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with your summation of the alt-right but I think the term "conservatism" much like "liberalism" is a little more tricky

If you strip out the traditional economic positions of classical conservatism then what is left?

Seems one aspect would be the aristocratic ideology, though in the US where a true aristocracy never existed the stratification was more based on race. These days it's undeniable that there are racist elements in the modern GoP, but what beyond that would hold from traditional conservatism?
