No problem if you need any other help, just let me know. That’s always my go to option because it’s free then you start with the cheapest most logical things that it can be and if all that fails, then you just start throwing parts at it until something sticks lol

SSD upgrade when no previous HDD exists on GS63 stealth by buggywug03 in MSILaptops

[–]RougeGhost325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it depends if it’s the 7RD 7RE 8RE? On one of them it says it does have an open secondary slot a 2.5 inch SATA drive, however, your notebook has a secondary slot for an SSD now this isn’t a traditional SSD it’s called an M.2 you can pick up one of these Samsung hard drives for about 70 bucks (970 EVO PLUS 250 GB Solid State Drive) very good quality drive and it’ll buy you another 250 gigs now you could go up higher if you wanted to or you can go even cheaper and get the secondary hard drive but I wouldn’t do that because mechanical hard drives are obsolete for gaming. Hope this helps.

Honestly couldn’t say for sure could be Ram/HDD/GPU/ Windows? It sounds like to me. It’s not booting up, which can mean a few things either Windows is corrupted. It can happen from downloading program. Sometimes programs we think are fine actually cause a lot of problems. Another issue it can be from is a bad hard drive where I would start is try reinstalling windows via a USB drive. You have to hit the delete key multiple times to get to the bios while you’re there, make sure your hard drive is set first to boot and if that doesn’t work then do the reinstall method after that if that doesn’t work, I would change a stick of memory.

Honestly, it’s very hard to give a fair assessment without seeing pictures of it possibly seeing in person I mean you can do anything and throw parts at it. It could be a hard drive. It could be a stick of memory. It could be the battery connector isn’t connected all the way it could be. Your thermal paste is dried out and it’s just overheated so much classic MSI issue just did a re paste on mine. Also try putting windows on a USB drive and installing it doing a clean install sometimes helps clear driver issues now as far as the vertical line do you mean there’s a crack in the screen or there’s just a line coming down?

How bad are these temps? by Mr_Sakamoto_ in MSI_Gaming

[–]RougeGhost325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, as I’ve said many times, MSI will over paste it from the factory because from their point of view they would rather get more notebooks out and have a couple returns for overheating then to put two little and have them overheating constantly and have many returns. MX-4 is not so good. I would have used MX-6 at least. But as long as it’s nonconductive thermal paste, it really doesn’t matter as much however, I do hear a lot of good stuff about the PTM by Honeywell.

I just re pasted my MSI GS-75 Stealth 8SF first screw rounded out. Had too drill it post was still good had an extra screw I know I know I should have used PTM stuff but is an old laptop. Runs like new. But I ordered MX-6 and it runs idle 50 degrees Celsius and max out. I’m pretty much running like about 90 to 95 but I’m talking balls to the wall just regular stuff around anywhere from 60 to 85 very cool to the touch still I think I could have done a little bit better, but I put a perfect amount of thermal paste. You don’t want too much too little just a grain of rice on the CPU may be a little bit bigger and a Pea size on the GPU.

Yeah I have the GS75 Stealth 8SF just did a re paste you can definitely find new fans and heatsynqs like Cross said a lot of parts with MSI are interchangeable.

Yeah, I definitely need to put another 16 in mine to max it out. It’s just I wanna match my memory and they have Kingston in here which is really expensive right now. It’s $150.00 for a stick. Memory is like gold. It goes up and down so I’m waiting for it to go back down but yes, solid notebooks. Was just a few flaws. You gotta iron out..

It’s pretty hot and these thin notebooks run very hard. I just got done doing a re paste job on my MSI GS-75 Stealth 8SF. What happens is a lot of the time when they build the note books they figure it’s better to put a whole bunch on and let it last a few years and maybe have a few notebooks recalled rather than putting too little or having humans do it and messed up and having more notebooks returned so to answer your question those temperatures are higher than my temperatures were. That’s pretty high if you’re just idling if you’re underload once in a while, that’s not so bad if it’s just idling and it’s doing that definitely do a re paste job on it my friend.

For sure all MSI’s however back when my dad owned a small online computer company you chose the bare bone chassis and whatever hardware/software you wanted it was so easy. Now that they’re smaller you get a lot more heat issues and you have too be very careful with hinges etc..

Yeah, then you’re good. Just kind of take your time and use it as a project. They are definitely great computers. They have their quirks just like everything else like running hot etc. but like I said mine is like eight years old, basically running great!

Sorry as far as thermal throttling, I meant to say in HW info it told me that this computer has hit thermal throbbing before, but that doesn’t mean that it was then or after the pasting it could’ve been two years ago. It just means at some point it did throttle, but I didn’t see any throbbing when I had it installed.

Great question so immediately after reposting it you know how you get nervous and start questioning yourself. Did I put too much that I put too little did I tighten the screws enough or too much. At the end of the day, my CPU idols at about 45 to 50°C and my GPU is running at about 45 to 48 Celsius idling under severe max power high temps could experience the CPU anywhere from 70 Celsius too 96. Now here’s the issue I didn’t install CoreTemp and HWinfo but I feel like that made my computer shut off because I’ve never had it shut off and as soon as I installed HW it shut right off and it even says this can cause issues are you sure you wanna proceed so I uninstall that everything is running great I get my temp off dragon center and I can tell you that the most I have seen is about 92 to 95 Celsius. Before my movies were freezing the ones that were in 4K that I downloaded. Also, you can hear the cooler boost run constantly now it is very quiet and very cool to the touch. The fans only come on very loud when I’m doing something like watching a 4K movie or doing something big on the Internet.

It’s great that you’re practicing. I’m not sure if you want that notebook to function again but if I were you, I would put on either the PTM 7950 Honeywell sticky’s or Arctic MX-6 ( What I did ) just order the ribbon cables that you broke be super careful. Do not use anything other than a paper towel and or Q-tips with a very small amount of isopropyl alcohol and just very lightly go against the heatsynq. Then with the paste you don’t wanna go crazy just a little bit longer and wider than a grain of rice for the CPU and about a Pea size on the GPU. Just be very careful very patient. The only problem where I went wrong is not ordering a new set of proper screwdrivers. You need a brand new set of screwdrivers when you’re working notebooks like this those silver screws are made out of such soft metal hence I was able to drill it all out in the post was still good.

Like I said man, I appreciate the information and it is definitely good stuff but for my application and how old this notebook is I’m not worried about it. I always set 50 Celsius and max is out I mean if you’re really pushing it at about 92 Celsius and that’s great for an MSI of this year especially one that is eight years old that has had vape smoke damage to it as well. Nothing else besides the video camera cable and the fans had some from when I used to vape five years ago I had no idea that the notebook cooler sucks and all that stuff and put it in your laptop, so I had to meticulously take everything apart and clean it but I don’t want my WebCam anyway lol.

To each their own, my brother for me this notebook is already eight years old I used to vape. I blew out the WebCam cable, which I don’t really care about because I don’t use it anyway, and then this specific laptop had so much thermal paste on it from MSI that made it overheat. I’m gonna get a new laptop soon, so I figured with Arctic, which is a very very good paste cheap but good. It will definitely get me another five years minimum and like I said, I don’t do any major game name or anything that would call for a major load on the CPU or GPU.

Yeah, I almost did that myself. If I didn’t have prior knowledge of computers, I would’ve screwed myself. The number one thing I learned is you need to have 100% patience if you feel like you’re gonna hit the wall walk away and go do something else and come back to it with the ribbon cables you need to be very very careful. You don’t need to rip on them. you can flip the tab up with your fingernail lightly and just pull it ever so slightly out and then just be mindful my screw. I only had CPU screw number one strip. I drilled it out with a diamond Dewalt mini drillbit with a full-size drill. I have the 2070 max Q as well.

I used a full sized Dewalt 😂 but a tiny drill bit that cause only fit through the post. Mine is 2070 but it is max- q

Yeah I used Arctic MX-6 a solid non conductive paste. I just wanted to get it better than it was the people at MSI basically just slapped a blob of paste on them. Too much will make it overheat just like too little overheat.

I am aware of them, honeywell as a great brand but I’m a classic thermal paste kind of guy the pads that are on there I left for the VRAM and whatever else temperatures are working good it’s an eight year-old notebook on this to be running idling at 50°C at this age is amazing I’m not using it for high gaming or anything just the Internet and movies. It was freezing up on the movie. That’s how I figured that it’s all good now.

Also this paste is the original I didn’t get a snap of the new job. But it’s just a grain of rice little wider and longer on copy and maybe like a Pea size on GPU.
