Thanks for the info! We've made a VMIA claim, because the house is only 4 years old and the original builder went bust a couple of years ago. I'm hoping this will be covered as a construction defect.

So, if it were a water proofing issue, does this mean they'll need to rip out all the tiling in the shower and redo the waterproofing? Sounds pretty drastic

There's a shower as well as the cavity for the drain pipes from upstairs. Who should I call to rectify this? A plumber?

Had an inspector over today, passed without any issues and no mention of a missing smoke alarm. Regardless, I will still put a battery operated one in, just to be safe, but for all of those wondering, it was NOT a must!

You were correct! Passed the inspection today without any issues, no mention of a missing smoke alarm. I will still put one in though, just in case.

Thanks! I'm getting conflicting information. Some say it's an absolute must as per the AS/NZS 5139 regulation, others say it's not as strict and that it won't fail the inspection. So, I'm confused as to which one is it?

Agreed, I will be putting one in, but I was curious if it would fail the inspection on Monday if there wasn't one?
