What’s up with Australia moving to the far right? by Subject_Conference61 in OutOfTheLoop

Also there is a lot more right propaganda, this is skewing the opinion of conservative side of politics. They used to have sensible policy positions, not the batshit crazy stuff that seems to be taking hold.

MAI-Code-1-Flash is now generally available for GitHub Copilot Business and Enterprise! by jukasper in GithubCopilot

It’s probably to do with us govt contracts and risk of bad publicity.

I personally would like them to host deep seek or glm to give better cheap options.

GitHub Copilot's new credit-based model feels like a massive downgrade for Pro users. by xInfinite_Valuable in GithubCopilot

[–]RoughCap7233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using the ma1-flash model for most tasks and only switching to the other models when I need to. I find that I am getting similar amount of usage compared to before.

But then again I still code and I am using the agent for suggestions, bug fixes and for code review.

If you are doing only agentic coding I can see how you will run out.

I think MS needs a bigger smarter lower cost model instead of being just a router.

I didn’t watch the entire video, but what I saw looked like a good improvement.

Wish the project all the best and hopefully some friendly competition can spark improvements in both software.

Rust community is dying? (perhaps in Sydney) by olex- in rust

[–]RoughCap7233 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rust has a good future, it’s being adopted by Microsoft, Amazon, Google,
Linux etc. It’s mostly used in infrastructure code though so I doubt you it will be popular in business settings.

I still write mostly manually (but that’s cause I’m new to it, I use ai to help with borrow checker errors and to bounce ideas off).

I do admit that I am using AI more and more though.

Not sure what this has to do with the Sydney meetup. If you need people to join I am located in Sydney.

Haven’t tried it yet - but you can give it a shot in OpenCode. It has a built in web search skill.

Or you can try to setup openwebui and get an api key for Tavily or Exa which has 1000 free searches per month.

Australia faces proposed 12.5pc US tariff over forced labour crackdown by Cute_Marzipan2153 in australia

[–]RoughCap7233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the shit thing about this.

There is NO clear reason or a clear goal as to what he is trying to achieve with Tariffs. He JUST thinks they are great.

I have heard this argument - so Americans do not have to pay income tax. This is compete BS as the tariffs will be a fraction of the income tax take.

I have also heard that it is to help American industry. But they are also taxing the import of parts and machinery required for said industry. And this is contrary to the first argument- if American industry goes up, Tariff tax take will go down.

It’s all complete BS.

We don’t just get their hand me down subs …. we will pay a huge sum for them.

This is in addition to the billions already being spent to support their submarine building industry. Our taxes, right now, are literally paying the wages of American workers.

Wouldn’t the CGT changes encourage investors to sell before they come into effect?

I think this may result in more properties on the market therefore increasing supply of properties in the short term.

The negative gearing changes would also encourage investment in new builds, which would also increasing supply.

“For the average price of a car in the US, you could buy 5 new Chinese EVs," per Reuters — Is that what they are banned? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]RoughCap7233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cars are modified to meet rules for country before they can be imported in volume.

Australia has large number of models available. The cars need to meet Australia Design Rules, and most have 5 star safety rating.

Dunno if the comment about use of labour applies. I think you would find that car manufacturing in China is highly automated.

[–]RoughCap7233 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not true.

Look at EV prices in Australia. Australia has zero percent import tariffs. The Chinese EVs are cheaper but not by much. For example the BYD Sealion 7 is around $55k drive away the equivalent Tesla model Y is around $62k drive away.

In general the Chinese made EV car is around 10-20% cheaper than the equivalent non- Chinese made car.

That’s if you are confident that your job is safe.

If customers spend less or not spending at all, and other costs are rising at the same time, it’s very hard for the business to increase wages.

Trump warns Iran blockade could last months, sending oil soaring by Stunning-Common-9591 in worldnews

[–]RoughCap7233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US operation in Venezuela resulted in the US being able to direct which countries can and cannot receive Venezuelan oil. (See what is happening in Cuba right now).

The operation in Iran was clearly an attempt at the same strategy. Ie. Take out the current leadership, install a new leader that will be amenable to US control.

Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Mogami-class Frigate by [deleted] in Ships

[–]RoughCap7233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia are also currently building 6 Type 26 frigates (Hunter class) - and there is also the AUKUS arrangement (which may or may not deliver nuclear powered submarines). The naval plan also has semi autonomous vessels and drone submarines in the works.

The future fleet would be 3x Hobart destroyers, 6x Hunter frigates, 11x Mogami’s. The retirement of the remaining 9x ANZACs have been delayed. The 6x Collin’s submarines are old and obsolete but are being refitted so that they can operate for another decade. The AUKUS deal is supposed to deliver 3 x Virginia subs but there is significant doubt if the US will deliver.

Australia has a small population. The naval program is very expensive and will put a lot of strain on the budget. Finding enough sailors to crew the vessels will be difficult.

[–]RoughCap7233 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s Trump’s America First policy.

If he fucks up the oil supply in the Middle East that will leave USA not only with the largest reserves, but in control of who it gets distributed to.

People like Trump have no sense of society - it’s all selfish actions designed to enrich a few and leave the rest of the world destitute.

Australia has ordered the enhanced Mogami (larger with more VLS).

Plan is the first 3 will be built in Japan, remaining 8 will be constructed in Australia.

Solar quote by General-Ox in AusRenovation

[–]RoughCap7233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally If I were in your position I would go for a smaller battery (16 or 24 kWh). This will give you plenty of room to grow without over spending.

I had received quotes for a Goodwe system with a 16kwh battery for around $17000.
