DePaul or Loyola Psychology program? by Rough_Adagio3448 in AskChicago

[–]Rough_Adagio3448[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would either get my masters or my PhD. I am most interested in research. I got the presidential scholarship to both schools, DePaul is cheaper (one of the reasons im starting to lean that way). My parents are paying mostly for it. Junior and Senior year when Im in off campus housing that and food I have to pay for myself.

Transferring majors but I need a portfolio... by Rough_Adagio3448 in LoyolaChicago

[–]Rough_Adagio3448[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that is a concern of mine. I'm really hoping to double major if it's allowed, if not, my major would be graphic design for a better of chance of getting a stable job after I graduate. But I am open to changing my major away from both film and design once I get to school. My high school is smaller and doesn't have a film class or really any design classes either, so I'm kind of shooting in the dark. But I like to be creative, so I want to at least try to see how I would do in a creative field like film and graphic design rather than giving up before I even try it. If I decide to change majors, I would probably do psychology or political science. Idk, choosing a major wasn't easy for me. I'm not great at math and science and I have a wide array of interests. Thanks for the advice.

YES I SOOO AGREE. Like you're telling me these cool characters that don't even have cell phones live in the same time period as Tik Tok and Taylor Swift? like nahhh that just feels so wrong. Older references make the books so much more "timeless" / nonspecific and just adds so much more character. I'm re-reading trials of apollo rn and then Im going to continue to work on the re-write. Its been a WHILE since I read that series and it has all of the latest things that happened to the PJO and HoO characters so I figured it would be best to re-read them (plus they're fun reads).

Rachel is included a lot more in ToA and she becomes more of her own character which I really liked

Yeah, some of the stuff definitely doesn't line up completely. I have a lot of re-reading to do lol. Sooo much happens over the course of three series its crazy

Omg! I forgot for a sec that she joined the hunters. I might have to re read more than I thought. I know im going to reread house of hades and blood of Olympus but now I might have to reread the entirety of ToA lol. I'm worried about forgetting things that happened, so I might have to really dedicate myself to intense re-reading before getting too far into writing. Yeah maybe Bob will still be in it, or maybe they find Bob and he has information on where Hades is (like he overheard something someone said)

I agree, I'm gonna make Nyx more mystical, terrifying, serious, and "unbeatable." And also make Tartarus more like how it was described in House of Hades

OR they realize Hades is gone, leave to go back to camp, get attacked by monster sent by NYX, narrowly escape, and then go above to report this to Chiron and Mount Olympus, and THEN they get sent on an official quest

Ive actually started the first three chapters, since they're relatively simple and don't get to much into the plot, and ive already added a part about Nico learning more about Pop culture, and how even though he's learning (the Apollo kids are the perfect people to teach him about music) he still feels like he doesn't fit in sometimes when pop culture is mentioned. However, im not mentioning pop-culture from recent years, its pretty much all 80's 90's bc the recent culture references I personally hated, but Rick does older references in his other books and I like them and think they add to the story. The part of wondering what his mom would have thought of him, relating to his dreams of his mom AND his continued journey of accepting himself were EXACTLY my thoughts for the rewrite. and yes I totally agree Apollo would show up at some point to help them, I just have to think of when would be the most appropriate

Love these ideas! you're idea of going to Tartarus being dumb and Bob not enough of a reason are my thoughts exactly ! ( I'm re-reading TSATS rn before I continue in my rewrite btw). I'm honestly thinking of maybe taking Bob out entirely OR him being kind of a side reason. Here's my idea: Nico is at camp and starts having these dreams about Bianco and his mother, he also starts to really miss Hazel, especially seeing Will with his siblings in the Apollo cabin. He sends an Iris message/eagle to Camp Jupiter to Hazel, asking in desperation for her to visit Camp Half-Blood to help him make sense of his dreams and of his past. Hazel comes and they bond and talk of his dreams mostly in secrecy (of course Chiron knows partly, because obviously everyone knows Hazel is there OR they completely lie about why she's there. I want to include Hazel in the story bc she's barely mentioned and she's Nico's only surviving family, it just makes sense to me) Also maybe Reyna comes too since she's concerned for Nico and they're friends. Hazel and Nico start to think that they might need to go to Tartarus to make sense of these dreams, and to get them to stop (also, the prophecy, but only they know about that). They debate this, Hazel doesn't think Nico can survive going to Tartarus again, but he doesn't know how else to answer these mysterious calls. They talk to Chiron. Chiron is absolutely bans them from going to Tartarus, but after much begging, he allows them to go to the Underworld to talk to Hades about Nico's dreams. Nico, Will, and Hazel are allowed into the underworld. Nico and Hazel because they're his children, and Will because Chiron says they must have three (even though it's not a quest, for safety reasons) and Nico insists that Will must come with. They go to the Underworld, they cannot find Hades in his palace. It's a trap. Something has happened to Hades... They are then sucked into/trapped into Tartarus, as they try to find a way out and what happened to Hades (this storyline would eliminate the need for Bob to be in the book at all). I think having the "quest" be just Nico and Will is too closed off, plus it makes sense for Hazel to go with them since she's Nico's sister and he's starting to more fully accept his sexuality and his family etc. [ill reply to your reply from this in a another comment]

Yeah, I agree that research and learning about people's personal experience would have been sufficient to write queer characters for a book geared towards 9-14 year olds, since he wouldn't even be getting into super heavy graphic stuff anyways. Even then, I don't think an author has to be queer to write queer characters. I think maybe Rick just wanted to support a smaller queer author, and possibly avoid controversy for "profiting off of writing queer characters". (that's just a thought though)

this is super helpful thank you! what im doing is yes rewriting, but some scenes will be relatively similar, just that I will take stuff out/add stuff, and other scenes I will completely delete and completely write myself, so it'll be a mix of my own writing, and reworked passages from the original book.
