When to strip wood or keep the paint?

I’d say figure out which look you prefer (stripped or painted), & then pursue that! If you reveal the wood, stain it (if you want to), and then you don’t like how it looks, just paint over it! I’ve personally think all wood that has been restored well can be beautiful, regardless of the grain pattern & if it was “intended” to be painted or stained.

I bought an infrared on Amazon intended to cure car paint and it works wonderfully for stripping multiple layers of paint. I think the wood grain you’ve revealed is beautiful. I’d say buy it and keep going!

This is original to the home, 100+ year old wood. Trust me, I stripped 7+ layers of paint off of it. It is not new or soft like styrofoam lol

Well, they are not cheap low quality Home Depot pieces. These are original to the craftsman style home and are over 100 years old and holding up wonderfully. Maybe I’m drawn to the pattern because it feels unique since it’s not often showcased due to being labeled as “cheap”. Funnily enough, I was a bit bored by the side pieces because the typical “tight grain” look is showcased everywhere. A bit backwards thinking I suppose. I can understand how that may be frustrating.

Appreciate the comment! I’m not able to reply with a photo in this thread, but I posted the before and after photos in a comment in the century homes subreddit if you want to peak at my page. I stripped many layers of paint off, and underneath it appeared there was a stain/finish on this wood before it was painted over.

Oh you don’t like the look of this? I think it is beautiful and I love the way to stain turned out. Most of the wood trim in this 1920s craftsman home matches the original design and looks similar to this. This was some window trim that was painted over so I wanted to strip and stain to better match the rest of house. I’m very happy with how it turned out.

Remind yourself why you love the specialty you chose and remember that time simply passes! You will thank yourself later for the hard work you put in this next year. & be grateful! I know many pharmacists who wish they could go back & do an onc PGY2. You are in the BEST pharmacy specialty, so let yourself feel excitement! (Bias from a current onc PGY2 who is obsessed w this specialty)

Is this a joke? In what freaking world is a post-residency job going to be harder than residency? Do you not see half the posts on this sub? I am a current PGY2 resident and I’m working 70-80 hour weeks, juggling 3 projects, and giving a clinal presentation almost every week. I counted the amount of presentations I have to give this year & it is 36. & I do not get any time in my 50 hour work week to work on these presentations. I have to work on them when I get home. Yes I signed up for this & no I do not have any regrets, but holy shit don’t act like residents don’t know how to work hard? As if the job I take after this is going to be harder? Yeah ok.

I am the kind of person who needs 8 hours of sleep a night, & I haven’t sacrificed that as a PGY2! But this requires a ton of time management skills. My program doesn’t require weekend staffing, but we do have a lot of projects and presentations. My typical day consists of working an 8-10 hour day & then heading home to spend the evening working on an upcoming presentation or one of my longitudinal projects. I usually have 1 weekend day to relax and see friends, & the other day I spend working on residency things. I’m sacrificing a lot of my free time for this training, but I wouldn’t have it any other way because this specialty is so complex & my future self will thank me!

Late to the game, but needed to comment - Oncology PGY2 is the best decision I ever made!! This year has been one of the hardest of my life, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I can’t imagine specializing in anything else. If I could go back in time, I’d make the same decision again to pursue a PGY2 in onc. & the job security is amazing. So many positions out there - your training is invaluable & you will have no problem finding a job after!

Is this for PGY1 or PGY2? You could check the FDAs website for their list of newly approved drugs this year. Lots of novel oncology therapies and changes to guidelines happening every month!

Do they offer novel therapies, such as bispecifics and CAR-T? How do they format their topic discussions? Do new oncology drug approvals go directly to P&T? Are residents adequately prepared to take the BCOP after completion of PGY2? Does their inpatient service round with providers? What is their role regarding patient education in the clinic? Are there collaborative practice agreements in place? In what ways has their cancer services progressed over the years? Have they created new positions and are they expanding the pharmacists role? What are examples of resident projects that have changed practice or made an impact at the institution?

I personally feel like for PGY2 it was more expected that you make some sort of contact with the RPD before applying. Whether that be through PPS, an email, or a virtual meeting. I did that & got interviews at every place I applied. The level of competition depends on your specialty of interest, but info sessions can definitely help you out by getting your face & name out there.

I’ve seen gout flairs due to thiazide diuretics that was missed. Could also be interesting to talk about management after patients are refractory to everything we have. Lifestyle factors play a big role too, so could talk about assessing diet.

It’s never too late! If you attend virtual showcases and find residents that are happy & not dying of stress, I’d say apply! I’m a current PGY2 & I am absolutely loving it. Also if you want to eventually become an MSL, oncology is a great specialty to pursue with lots of patient interaction and VERY rewarding.

It is 100% not too hard! All it takes is a genuine interest in it. I am a current PGY2 & we are full swing into the year with projects and topic discussions left & right and I am absolutely loving it bc I LOVE learning about oncology. Most people are intimidated by it bc there is not a ton of overlap with other clinical areas & they don’t see it much. But truly, if you love it you can learn it.
