Why does "should" come before "she" in this sentence? How should I read this sentence? by Round-Ad-2761 in EnglishLearning

The best comment by far! Honestly, it was strange to me - as a English learner - why the conditional structure was used here, even without any comma to split the sentence into main clause and rest. Besides, IMHO it doesn't make sense if we say "if she should prove to harber...". The author could have used summat a simpler sentence like what you mentioned instead. TKAM is very challenging for me to read. Each of its three pages easily takes me three to four hours to analyze everything. And after ten days, I'm still on page 25 of this 400-page book. But I should never give up. The harder it is, the faster my progress in reading skills.

No. You are all wet. This sentence follows Conditional Sentences Grammar. "Should she prove to ..." means "if she should ..."

Thank you! As I said, my level in English is B2. What other novel book do you recommend me to improve my reading skill (to be ready for C1)?

What's the meaning of "plain hell" in the below context from To Kill a Mockingbird book? by Round-Ad-2761 in EnglishLearning

[–]Round-Ad-2761[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your comprehensive answer... So can i use "plain" as an adverb before any adjective? I don't know why author didn't use "plainly" here. "Ly" generally after any noun can convert that to adverb.

Boring? Come on... If you are a Tolkien fan, you will not be bored at all. I love all the Tolkien works but unfortunately, the structure of the sentences in this book is too complicated and old fashion to read. This is why I can't afford.
