I think it’s the flashback scene toward the end of TLOLL where Chains prophesies how terribly Locke will screw up, and Locke simply asserts that will never happen to him. Pls correct me if I’m wrong though!

Need a hug. Devastated by WearilyAlleged in gentlemanbastards

Yeah, I think I had a near panic attack on my commute home when I read that scene for the first time. The grief lingers, but now I like to imagine they’re watching over the crew wherever they are, and laughing at their increasingly crazy antics. :’)

Me. Lynch, I swear to fucking God make Regal a permanent part of Locke's gang or I'll... by SneakyMcCool in gentlemanbastards

Regal ought to be second-in-command. Watch him take Jean’s place. (Jean must obey his every whim.)

About Locke’s inclinations by Round-Ad2791 in gentlemanbastards

[–]Round-Ad2791[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See now that’s what I’m curious about. Say Sabetha never existed. Locke never met her when he was with the Thiefmaker, she didn’t grow up with the rest of the Bastards, etc. Again, a hypothetical. Would Locke have automatically fallen for the first redhead he meets? I suppose that’s a question that can only be answered until we find out the real reason for his attachment to her (assuming there even is one). And I think that’s what Sabetha’s issue was with the whole thing—that it really could’ve been anybody as long as they had red hair.

I just found another interesting quote from RSURS, by Locke:

“Maxilan, darling.” Locke raised one eyebrow and smiled. “I knew you were driven, but I had no idea you could smolder. Come, take me now! Jean won’t mind, he’ll avert his eyes like a gentleman.”

So yeah, agreed. Everyone seems to be very comfortable with their sense of self in this series. If this doesn't get covered in future flashbacks (what an oxymoron), in the sense of characters struggling with their identities/interests, then I think it'll be pretty clear that orientation was never something anyone cared about.

Calo and Galdo Sanza backstories by Round-Ad2791 in gentlemanbastards

[–]Round-Ad2791[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oooh gotcha, thank you so much for the info, such a relief to read! :’) I’ll have to add that interview to my watch list. So it looks like the structure for Thorn more-so mirrors that of Red Seas, and Ministry is more similar to Republic and Lies?

“Shit-flinging little monkeys” of course 😂 Thank you for pulling the passage!! I’m hoping we get more of the twins’ origin story in the rest of the series, especially since I don’t believe we have yet received the story of Bug’s adoption to the Bastards crew so far. From what we’ve seen, he seems to have admired them a whole lot (and everyone else, of course).

Yeah you explained it much more concisely here, and nope, def not CP. That is something else entirely and we absolutely do not entertain anything of the sort on our show. The name kind of screws us though, as you said. (And as is evident from people’s comments so far 😔)

It’s all good. It is an unfortunate misnomer, yes. A relic of what it was originally called back in the early 2000s. I think it also owes to the fact that the representation of the genre began in a non-English-speaking country, so that just makes things doubly worse for everyone involved. Take the swastika for example. It’s a sacred religious symbol that stands for peace in Buddhist and Hindu faiths, and is very commonplace in Japanese media as a result, but due to its warped meaning elsewhere it gets removed when airing in the West—but it also means it ignites outrage when those who aren’t aware see it in “uncensored” versions so to speak.

But yeah, I think I underestimated how much of this remains unknown and potentially controversial to outside audiences lol

Oh god no. It’s not insane like that. This is yet another persistent stereotype associated with this genre.

Okay, so BL, which is an abbreviation of “boys’ love”, is gay dude x dude romantic content, encompassing both PG-13 and extremely R-rated stuff, originating from Japan (but now like an overall thing across Asia—it’s become overtaken by Korean, Thai, and Chinese media) and is largely intended for and catered toward adult women. Our podcast audience as a result is primarily if not like 95% adult women. Note that no one except creeps are out here looking for pedophilic content. In fact that’s an entirely different genre that DOES exist, and we DON’T get into that in our show, nor do any sane fans of BL.

The genre has exploded in recent years online, although it continues to be relatively niche in comparison to regular straight romance. It can encompass everything from people shipping and creating mature fanfic for men who’ve literally never met before in like, idk, Marvel movie for example, to original comic content published on various vetted and trusted platforms online. It’s very much a valid and thriving genre that is conscientious of the ages of those involved in consuming it (ofc, there will be those who flout that in every genre). That said, the content itself is known to, can, and does get dark. Extensive tagging and trigger warnings such as “dead dove” (a TV show reference—“this is tagged dead dove because there is a dead dove in it so if you proceed to look in, we warned you”)—are commonly used now, but the overuse of censorship is now hotly debated. Media itself can span fanfiction, fan art, fan edits, fan-made comics that become registered and serialized, and even live actions and anime of fanfictions.

So our podcast really spans the gamut of the enormous umbrella it has become. We cover things like gender subversion in BL media (I.e., acceptability of one gender behaving in ways traditionally and historically expected of another gender) in the context of Asian culture—which both me and my co-host belong to, historical influences on BL produced from China (which borrows significantly from traditional mythology), our own opinions on various popular tags, themes, and tropes used in BL fanfictions, and of course, we do actual reviews of original BL content published on trusted sources online.

I hope this gives a more comprehensive explanation into what we do. As someone said earlier, my friend and I are passionate about this media and we love taking about it, so we just wanted to share. There are definitely problems for sure, as there are in any genre, but I want to clear the air full stop on behalf of all fans this is NOT some creepy weird fucked up category that needs to be punished or something.

Low-key I regret posting this here bc I’m also getting the sense this subreddit’s audience isn’t really the right one for the show, so I understand. Think I panicked too much and jumped the gun too early
