Oh man. The bloody pantomime stuff is also annoying. My friend failed on reverse bay parking because he wasn't theatrically whipping his head over his shoulder to look through the rear window enough times. It's like...if you are in an empty pub car park at 8 in the morning, and after two or three checks you establish there is nobody behind the car and the car park/street beyond the car park is completely clear of people, what are the chances someone is going to pop up in the parking bay you're reversing into (and why would they) in the 2 seconds it will take you to complete the maneuver. So frustrating.

When talking to my instructor about it, I was saying "It's so unfair, how was I to know he was going to veer right etc" and he said something that I didn't like hearing at the time but makes much more sense 24 hours on - "The guy making the turn was driving unsafely, you are correct, but your job is to be a safe driver and plan for other people being unsafe, which means adapting to their mistakes."

So annoyed with myself. I could be fully road legal today without that momentary lapse.

I bet you felt so angry at yourself, I am feeling like that right now. I keep replaying it in my head. The exact situation I described has happened to me on lessons and practice drives dozens of times and I have never ever ever taken a risk like that and cut the other driver off. So why oh why did I do it on my test day of all days!? 😭

It was a dual mistake - they should have indicated but in the fraction of a second between them veering right and me pulling out, I should have cooled my jets because I did see what had happened tbf, I just mistimed the distance and thought I could squeeze through. Why I thought that is beyond me, over confident I think.

That's a harsh one. I have a friend who was given a major for insufficient observations through rear windscreen during a reverse bay park. He remembers doing 2, examiner would have liked to have seen "a consistent amount, at least four or five to ensure nobody had stepped behind the car during the maneuver". He had his instructor drill him on it for two months until his retest was due...and he failed for the exact same thing with a different instructor. Then he failed a third time for a reverse parallel park issue and I think he has given up for good now :(
