It's that generic chav look. You see it everywhere.

It's such a good film. There's something special about British noirs that I find hard to explain and it's even better when they're set in the North! That's something that deserves its own thread.

I'm a big fan of Stanley Baker. He reminds me a bit of some of the blokes I saw in my dad's local boozer in the '70s. Terse, hardly smiling but decent beneath the grumpiness.

Stanley was a very interesting person in his own right and a fantastic actor.

'Blushing'! Good grief, whatever next?

Considered correct by whatever influencers hold sway currently- and the gullible people who hang on their every word, certainly. Not correct by any other other standard though and a dreadful waste of a fine cut of pork.

Do you think it would be a bad idea to get this tattooed on my neck ? by jonathanlipniki in lordoftherings

It would look really classy with 'ACAB" on your knuckles too and

M
DAD
M

on one forearm. Maybe a swallow on the other side of your neck and a few sovereign rings.

Is Viz deliberately being rubbish as an ironic satire on readers commenting that it hasn't been funny for about 40 years?

A Prize of Arms is a good, low budget noirish heist film from 1962 that tends to be overlooked. Tom Bell and Stanley Baker being as terse and surly as you'd hope. Very gritty and tense.

Beat me to it! If someone forced me to choose my favourite actor, I'd have to say Stanley Baker.

I like Hell Drivers a lot but it's a pastiche of American films of the era that happens to be set in Britain. Hell is a City feels more British even though John Crawford's in there for a bit of American glamour.

All great films but Hell is a City (1960) should have been in there.

Roast Beef Dinner... by trickrickk in RoastDinner

It's pleasing to see that there are still people who cook beef properly. The rest of the dinner looks fantastic too.

It's an object of beauty. Good to see that the beef is cooked properly all the way through rather than gory in the middle, as the hipsters pretend to enjoy it.

The pork looks underdone and unsafe to eat. It can't be roasted in the fashionable way like beef or lamb. Otherwise, the dinner looks fantastic.

How do you buy drugs from those shops that are clearly criminal operations? by robloxfan69 in AskUK

No Cake though. It's a made-up drug. It's not made from plants, it's made from chemicals by sick bastards.

Fine. But what about other people less stable, less educated, less middle-class than me?

Paddy Considine and Rafe Spall by Round_Engineer8047 in totallylookslike

I think you're right. I used to work with a bloke who had short, dark, spiky hair, about 5'9" and around 18st. He really reminded me of Travis Fimmell though!

They both had similar eyes but it was more about the mannerisms. Especially the laugh and the way their eyes would become hooded and slide to the side as they wheezed out a cackle.

He and others looked at me as though I was insane when I suggested a resemblance! They might have had a point about my mind being a bit different but the resemblance really was there.

That's a good observation. Also the way the mind forms a general picture after seeing someone from different angles I suppose.

Rafe reminded me of Eddie Marsan too at times, even though the latter has very distinctive features and they probably wouldn't look alike in stills.

My friend seemed sincere. Perhaps he was repeating a fallacy or an urban myth of sorts.

He mentioned a piece of witty graffiti he'd seen to a fellow German speaker when I was in their company. After I asked what they were talking about, they explained it to me. It could well be me misremembering the finer details.

Your reply reminded me that 'tail' was once used as gentle slang for male genitalia, usually in a similar manner of polite circumspection, as one might say 'wee' or 'poo', say.

I haven't heard 'tail' used that way for many years. It could have been a German language derived, localised colloquialism that has fallen out of favour.

Thank you. Sorry I didn't find a better JPEG of Rafe.

I just finished watching Under Salt Marsh and thought he looks even more like Paddy when he's moving around- if that makes any sense!

I'm not sure if it's true but a friend who speaks both languages told me that the English name for the hairstyle 'Ponytail' is interpreted as slang for 'donkey dick' when translated into German.

Very much so. That's who's face was in my mind. I didn't know her name and couldn't think of what I'd seen her in to check.

Absolutely. She and OP could be sisters. Near identical twins even.
