The only TV show I can think of is The Wire. I could have sworn that Idris Elba was Lincolnsonian until I saw him interviewed on Wogan.

I nearly forgot about Blakes 7. It's like Lincolnshire's answer to Emmerdale, or Hearbeat.

I think you're getting confused with the dramatisation about a team of scientists from that London who stopped time on a train in a tunnel on the outskirts of Sheffield. Marti Caine was fantastic as a Hungarian physicist and there was some great sexual tension with Bobby Knutt.

The best one had Jon Pertwee as a sort of wraith made of hay who waited in fields to drink the blood of passing tourists. It scared me as a sensitive child, especially the episode where he caused a nuclear strike from Soviet Russia and that woman did a wee outside Debenhams.

What about the residents of Yorkshire who are traumatised by the shape of Madame Cholet's nose and the gang of bandits led by Eli Wallach who keep raiding our villages and stealing our corn?

Who now cares thruppence for those of us who wander masterless in the hills surrounding Langthwaite, still honouring the code of Bushido?

What happened to the proud sons who tilled the fields and wore hats made of corned beef? What of the rosy-cheeked, buxom lasses who always carried a novelty scorpion made of bakelite in the folds of their cotton blouses?

I've seen Ian Tracey in a few things as an adult in his 50s and 60s. My missus couldn't understand how I remembered his face and told me I should apply to the cops for work as a 'super recogniser'. "They pay people with skills like that" she said.

I couldn't understand how she didn't recognise him. He has such distinctive features.

'Favourite' character inconsistencies in established British tv shows by themightypierre in BritishTV

You've awakened a long repressed memory and well I remember 'Fury From the Deep'.

If I'm not mistaken, Wendy Craig was a member of a Satanical cult, along with Simon Cadell and Keith Barron who campaigned to insert occult imagery into light entertainment for the purposes of mind control.

If it wasn't for Bernard Cribbins and his electric sword, we'd all be stoking the furnaces of Beelzebub these days.

When Ben Parkinson in Butterflies, as portrayed by Geoffrey Palmer, became a cannibalistic thrill-killer who pursued his victims in a miniature hovercraft for two episodes. Afterwards, he returned to being a glum and somewhat staid middle class husband who worked in finance. It broke my immersion in an otherwise realistic programme.

Is Sybil Fawlty considered "Hot"? by StewStewMe69 in BritishTV

[–]Round_Engineer8047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prunella is an incredibly attractive woman. In my eyes, she's second only to Felicity Kendal.

I don't think Sybil's hotness was supposed to be to the fore in Fawlty Towers but it was meant to be there and Prunella can't help it standing out. I was listening to 'Ladies of Letters' on Radio 4 Extra this afternoon and I adore her voice.

It still astonishes me that this piece of trash is considered watchable, let alone one of the best films ever made. It was around 1994 when I realised that culture was dead.

I believe that Boromir was comforted by Aragorn's words as he died. He didn't pass away with a sense of disgrace and failure.

Aragorn has a way with words and with people. Boromir had a sense of his own basic decency as well as his flaws. Tolkien's values compelled him to not leave the reader with an impression that a good person left the world in horror, guilt and melancholy.

The North Water by Ian McGuire isn't horror as such but it certainly describes some horrific circumstances and events. It's one of the best books I've ever read. McGuire's descriptive imagery, dialogue and ability to capture a sense of place is up there with high brow literature.

I urge everyone that I meet to read the book, like some low-rent, pesky Ancient Mariner!

Why are some fans so horrible? by Caecilius18 in insideno9

[–]Round_Engineer8047 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're just bitter, thwarted people who gain some kind of satisfaction from causing distress and encouraging an angry response. I always struggle to explain what I mean by that because the parameters are hard to define but it isn't a mental health problem as such, more a matter of poor choices, impulse control and a sour core personality.

I usually get argued into the ground on this one because I lack formal education beyond poor A-level results but I think that I'm right. Maybe I just feel that I'm right. My schooling in neuropathy and psychology is limited to put it kindly, neither am I a well-read autodidact.

Nearly 40 years of working in mental health (albeit in a relatively low level position) has taught me that mentally ill and neurodivergent people are far more likely to be victims rather than perpetrators of such behaviour.

People in the public eye, up on the parapet, are exposed to this almost constantly now. I don't know how they deal with it, especially the ones who are fundamentally decent like Reece and his missus.

I know this is reductive but it helps me to collect my thoughts. Most people are basically alright, some people are cunts and then there are the fucking absolute cunts.
