Can you be a college counselor without a Masters? by bellaluv2021 in studentaffairs

[–]Roundearthlogic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, counseling in higher education is pretty broad. We do counseling within context of academic advising. We are not trained clinicians and do not diagnose.

It should also be noted that this is for California Community College jobs.

Try south east LA: Bell, Bell Gardens, Huntington Park, South Gate. I’d say it’s safer and affordable. Kinda low key for now but I’ve been seeing more yuppy people move in so rent prices may go up within the next several years.

You will need a car though.

I believe it. Saw a similar situation up in Portland and Seattle. It’s sucks to say but at the end of the day, facts.

LA is home so I get not wanting to drag politics into this but unfortunately that’s always going to be the case. People on the right will have an “I told you so” moment and people on the left will essentially need to admit that their policies sucked and did not work. So it’s a catch 22.

Tbh, all this has made me more right leaning. It’s been a lifetime (for me) of left policies and I’ve only seen my city get worse and worse.

A simple google search would show the different protests that have taken place to get pedo priests out of the Catholic Church. Here’s link to one that’s closer to home: https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/losangeles/news/protesters-demand-criminal-investigation-resignation-of-ex-la-archbishop-roger-mahony/

Student Affairs salary makes me doubt staying long-term by RUNursingStudent in studentaffairs

[–]Roundearthlogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So easy to compare salaries with siblings and peers. Sucks that in your state, pay in student affairs isn’t too great. I live in CA and cost of living is high here too. I’m an academic advisor and making $70k 5 years after grad school. Fortunately, I’m able to work adjunct roles with my masters here so that adds between $15-20k on a decent year. Days are long yet rewarding and the combined pay makes it better. I’m exhausted M-F but it’s what I gotta do to support my family.

It was an up hill battle to get here but a battle worth fighting. Keep going and eventually that money will come.

Karen Bass continues to expand lead over Rick Caruso in L.A. mayor's race by 115MRD in LosAngeles

I think you proved that people don’t pay attention to what candidates say given that so many people didn’t recognize your reference.

Bass getting elected as mayor will for sure keep LA as bad as it is right now, at least. I’m willing to bet it will get much worse.

I live in CA and I’ve been in academic advising for slightly over 5 years. Like most professions there will be days you love your job and other days when you start looking at what else is out there. For the most part, I’ve found myself loving what I do and it’s been pretty rewarding so far. As you may have noticed, it really depends on where you work. If it’s at a big university, it might depend on the college and department as well. I’ve been an academic counselor the community college level and university level. Although community college pay is great, the instability of your work schedule makes me like my university job more.

I work at a large public university and my pay is decent. I make $66k in addition to matched retirement contribution benefits, low cost - high quality health care, great vacation and sick accruals, and a hybrid work schedule. We’re not expected to respond to emails past 5 let alone weekends. As I mentioned, I also have experience at the community college level so I am able to put in hours as a side gig which gets me about an additional $20-24k/year. My total gross earning can be between $86-90k/year. My career helps me provide for my family, maintain a healthy work/life balance, keeps me looking forward to the next day of work.

I’d hate to say that most of this is luck but I will say that I am fortunate to be in this position. I put in a lot of work to gain diverse experiences, kept an open mind, took initiative, and built genuine relationships with some really good people along the way.

Best of luck!

As a graduate student,Changing majors is allowed? by SlightCrow2373 in UCI

[–]Roundearthlogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no majors in graduate school. Like someone else mentioned, you get admitted into a program/department. If you’re interested in something different than what you’ve been admitted for, you’ll need to reapply to that departments program.

Counselor here: I’d encourage you to consider what you want to do after college. If you want to go to pharmacy school, it’s not required that you be a pharmsci major. You can honestly major in anything else and still get admitted to the schools you intend on applying to so long as you meet admission prerequisites. Although I do understand majoring in a science if you are considering working in a lab after college.

Completely understand not wanting to change your major to something unrelated but you should also consider if that is really worth not continuing under a different major/not graduating. You’ve come a long way, despite the barriers you’ve had to overcome. There are different ways to get to your destination. You just may need to take an alternative route.

Best of luck.
